Chapter 2

Author: Pumpkin Scoop
The controller wasn't the only thing in the bags for Matt. There were a couple of blind boxes next to it too, the ones that Matt had been asking for for more than two weeks.

On my last birthday, I'd begged Dad to buy me a gaming keyboard that I'd had my eye on for a long time. I said that I would be able to use it for gaming and studying.

But Dad refused and said that a regular 20-dollar keyboard was just as good. He refused to buy me the gaming keyboard, saying it was too expensive and just not worth it.

The shopping bag next to Matt's presents contained a whole box of yogurt drinks that were endorsed by Carrie's favorite pop star. There was also a slice of the viral cake from a trendy cafe that she'd bugged Mom for the longest time, and a box of fresh cherries that she said she wanted.

The entire table was filled with items for Matt and Carrie, but none of them were for me.

It had always been like this.

If Matt got into trouble, Mom would never tell him off. Instead, she would yell at me and make Matt watch, warning him that he would be next if he got into trouble again.

If Carrie rebelled, Dad would never raise her voice at her. Instead, he sent me off to the countryside for "reformation", claiming that it was because I was up to no good, and warned Carrie that she would be next if she didn't behave.

I was always the one taking the blame for everyone else's mistakes in this blended family. My only role was to serve as a warning to Matt and Carrie for their mistakes, and that was all.

My mind wandered off as I stared at the things on the table. Just then, the door lock jiggled, and Matt and Carrie rushed into the house with an extremely determined and defiant look on their faces.

The moment they stepped into the house, they yelled at Mom and Dad, "So what if you found out that we're planning to skip school? We'll never apologize for anything! And we're not changing any of our plans! We will still go whether you like it or not!"

Mom got up and took their school bags from them. Her tone was indulgent as she said, "Alright, alright. I can't do anything to change your mind, can I?"

Dad came out of the kitchen just then and gave them a side glance. He then said coldly, "You can go if you want to, but on one condition. You have to come back in time for your SAT. If you dare to miss the SAT, I will not hesitate to break your legs. Do you understand?"

Matt and Carrie were stunned. They clearly didn't think that Mom and Dad would agree to their demands and give in that easily.

Matt instinctively looked around the living room and suddenly frowned. He asked, "Where's Archie? I don't see him anywhere."

I felt my heart leap into my throat. Would they find out that I was dead?

Mom and Dad said nothing. Mom continued putting away the things on the table, and Dad remained standing in the kitchen, drying his hands.

Carrie's face dropped, and so did Matt's.

"Did you guys punish Archie again?"

Mom scoffed coldly and said matter-of-factly, "He did something wrong, so he deserved his punishment. Who told him to even dare think of going camping instead of studying for his finals? Shouldn't I be punishing him for slacking off?"

Matt and Carrie kept their mouths shut at once. They knew that Mom and Dad weren't punishing me because I'd done anything wrong. They were only punishing me for show.

It was supposed to serve as a warning to Matt and Carrie, telling them that they would be next if they dared to pull the same stunt again.

Since young, Mom and Dad would always find a way to scold me and punish me every time Matt or Carrie misbehaved or did something wrong. Matt and Carrie didn't have to be punished. They just had to stand next to me and watch me be punished.

I still remembered everything clearly.

Once, Matt stole 500 dollars from Mom for his in-game purchases. Mom slapped me three times in front of him. He was just standing in the corner back then—the latest in-game purchase shining brightly on his phone screen—completely frozen.

Another time, Carrie skipped school to attend her idol's concert. Dad punished me by forcing me to kneel outside the door for three whole hours. Carrie got such a fright when she got back that she didn't dare to go out for the next week.

However, Matt and Carrie soon reverted to their old ways and continued doing as they pleased.

They were already used to me always taking the punishment on their behalf anyway. They were used to Mom and Dad favoring them and showering them with unconditional love while I was stuck with all their punishments.

The air was tense. Dad then took Carrie's hand and said, "Make sure you take care of yourself when you attend the concert tomorrow. Stay with your friends and don't wander off alone. And come straight home once it's over. Got it?

He added, "Let me know if you don't have enough money to spend. I'll give you more if you need it."

Carrie immediately wrapped her hand around his arm, beaming gratefully at him. "Got it, Dad. You're the best!"

Mom also handed a new outfit to Matt and said seriously, "Wear this to your date tomorrow. But you're only allowed to meet her, understand? Don't even think about doing anything foolish.

"You can wait until after you've taken your SAT and enrolled in college to start anything serious. If you dare to go overboard, then you can forget about ever playing your mobile games again. Got it?"

Matt took the new outfit from Mom, his eyes lighting up with excitement. But as Mom continued nagging at him, he waved a hand at her impatiently and said, "Fine, I get it. Stop nagging. I'm already an adult, Mom. I know where to stop."

The four of them then happily made their way to the table. It was already set with all the dishes that Matt and Carrie loved.

Mom also cried. She kept slapping herself until her lips split and she began bleeding from the corners of her mouth."I was a monster, Archie! I was out of my mind! I never should have taken it out on you. I never should have hit you. I never should have tied you up…"If you hate me now, won't you just come and haunt me in my dreams? You can punish me however you like… Please don't just ignore me like this… I can't take it…"Mom and Dad continued talking to themselves in their cell, slapping and hitting themselves until their faces were swollen and bloody. The prison guard saw their pitiful state and sighed before telling them to pull themselves together.I floated outside the glass window, staring at their sorry sight. Suddenly, the resentment I'd held toward them for more than a decade just dissipated like that.I suddenly stopped hating them now that I saw them living in perpetual remorse and burdened for life with the guilt of killing their own son. They'd already received th

Matt had to wake up every morning at 6:00 am and work until 8:00 pm, but he only earned about 100 dollars a day. The sun was scorchingly hot during the summer, and it made Matt so sunburned that his skin peeled off in large chunks. His back was also covered in welts. It hurt so badly that he could barely go to sleep at night. His hands were covered in blisters, and they would burst inside his gloves, making his skin stick painfully to the fabric. When he took off his gloves at the end of the day, his skin and flesh would be peeled off as well, causing him excruciating pain. And yet, the foremen yelled at him and scolded him almost every day, accusing him of being slow and lazy and even deducting his daily wages regularly. In the past, Matt never needed to even lift a finger at home. He could just come home after school and lie in bed as he gamed on his phone. Mom would be the one bringing meals to him on a tray at times. But now, he had to climb dozens of flights of stairs with d

The robot was something I'd bought for my tenth birthday for myself. I'd saved up for three months just to buy it. But the moment I brought it home, Matt snatched it from me and played with it instead. He played with it for two weeks before getting bored with it and throwing it into the trash. I picked it up, cleaned it, and hid it under my pillow, playing with it for the next six years. Now, Carrie held the robot in her arms wherever she went. Sometimes, she would crouch before my old room and speak to herself."Do you want some cantaloupe, Archie? I'll go and buy some for you, alright? "I was wrong, Archie. I'm sorry. I won't let you take my punishments anymore. Won't you please come back?"Sometimes, she would get up in the middle of the night, rush out to the 24-hour supermarket, and beg the staff to cut up a whole fresh cantaloupe for her. She'd then bring it home and pound heavily on my door, crying and yelling at me to come out and eat it.The neighbors eventually agreed

Matt lowered his head as his tears fell onto the police officer's notebook."Yes… Mom would always punish Archie every time I skipped school and went to the arcade or internet cafe…"The last time I secretly opened a bag of tortilla chips, Mom thought Archie stole it, and she beat him half to death. I didn't dare to say a word…"Carrie also nodded, crying hard with her hair in a mess and the pop star stickers on her face peeling off."The last time I skipped school, Dad sent Archie to the countryside and forced him to do hard labor for two months… I didn't dare to say anything…"They continued bringing up one incident after another, recounting all the punishments that I had taken for them over the years.Their statements took more than two hours, and by the time it was all done, it was almost time for the second half of the SAT to begin. The police officer looked at them and sighed."You can go to school and take the remainder of your test for now. We'll ask you to come in agai

I floated beside Dad and watched him make a spectacle of himself, feeling nothing in my chest. If he thought that he was being pitiful, then what about me? Who ever showed me any pity when I was tied to the bed and struggled to breathe as my life slowly slipped away?As the police car drove away, I pressed my face against the car window, watching my home of over a decade shrink smaller and smaller until it vanished out of sight. It suddenly occurred to me that I had never eaten a whole cantaloupe on my own.The wind blew into my eyes and stung them. I thought that I was going to cry again, but I had already run out of tears.I followed the police car to the police station and watched as Mom and Dad were locked up in the interrogation rooms, apologizing profusely over and over again.I stayed there for the whole night. The next morning, I heard two police officers talking to each other outside in the lounge."The victim's half-siblings are coming back today for the SAT, right?"

The moment the body bag was zipped up, Dad lunged at my body again, but two police officers stopped him."Sir, please calm down. We need to bring the victim back for an autopsy to determine the cause of death."Meanwhile, Mom sat on the couch, her head in her hands, tears streaming down her face in horror. When the police took statements from Mom and Dad, trying to get to the bottom of things, Mom still tried to hide the truth and lowered her head. "It's just… My son was behaving badly, so I tied him up to give him a fright…" she said. "But I never thought that he would struggle so much and end up tightening the rope on him like that… It was an accident, officer! We didn't mean to kill him…"The police officer sitting opposite her slammed his notebook onto the table with a dark expression on his face."An accident? We've checked the knots, and you used a sailor's knot on him! It's specifically designed to bind prisoners because the more they struggle, the tighter the knots will
