Chapter 3

Author: Pumpkin Scoop
Halfway through the meal, Matt picked up a slice of beef brisket and suddenly looked at my bedroom door. A hint of pity flashed in his eyes.

"Dad, should we get Archie to join us for dinner too?"

Mom shook her head and waved her hand at him. "Ignore him."

Carrie got up and went into the kitchen to grab an empty plate. "I'll bring his dinner in for him. He already has stomach issues. He's going to get gastritis again if he doesn't eat on time."

She piled it high with the beef brisket and some salad before heading toward my room. But just as she was about to reach for my doorknob, a loud shout rang out behind her.

"Shit! The train's leaving in 40 minutes! I'm going to be late!"

Matt shot to his feet, his fork and knife clattering to the ground. He walked over and grabbed Carrie by the arm, his face pale. "Forget it! You're wasting time! Everything will be in vain if we miss our train! And then my date is going to kill me if I stand her up!"

Dad also went and grabbed Carrie's arm. "Alright, alright. Sit back down and eat. We'll send you both to the train station once you're done. It's only a 15-minute ride at most. Finish your food first. You'll make it in time."

"Hurry up! Stop wasting time!" Matt cried, pulling Carrie back to her seat. "Hurry up and eat. We're going to be late. I haven't even packed my things yet!"

"Alright," Carrie muttered and left my plate on the table. The pile of sliced beef brisket fell over onto the table, but she didn't even look at my room again after that. She just sat back down, shoved food into her mouth, and even urged Matt to hurry up.

I remained floating where I was, watching them eat in a hurry. The place where my heart should be hurt a lot.

So, the little bit of care and concern Matt and Carrie had for me wasn't even worth another second in the face of their date and concert.

I floated back into my bedroom and sat next to my cold, lifeless body. Rigor mortis had set in, and I was completely stiff on the bed. My face had turned purple and even started to swell.

Outside, the four people were ignorant of the fact and still blissfully enjoying their dinner in the dining room.

Soon, I heard them packing and bustling around before leaving. It was quite a commotion, with lots of shouting and urging.

Ten minutes later, I heard Dad walking over to my bedroom. Then, he placed something down on the floor with a loud clang.

"Archie Hammond!" he yelled impatiently. "Get up and eat! Your mom and I are sending Matt and Carrie to the train station. Remember to wash the dishes in the kitchen once you're done!

After a pause, he added, "Did you hear what I just said? I'm not going to let you off again if you keep sulking like this!"

Then, he turned to leave. The front door slammed shut with a bang, and the whole world went quiet once again.

I floated out and looked at the plate of food Dad had thrown at my door as though he was feeding a dog and chuckled bitterly.

Dad had already forgotten that he'd locked my door from the outside and that Mom had tied me to the bed this morning, hadn't he?

So, how was I supposed to come out for food or do the dishes at all?

I floated back to my body, sat back next to it, and waited quietly.

Would Mom and Dad regret anything when they came back and found me dead? Would they be sad or upset?

Or, would they think that I died at an extremely inconvenient time because my death would affect Matt and Carrie when they took the SAT in two days?

Half an hour soon passed. I heard the sound of a key turning in the lock, and Mom and Dad walked back into the house. Dad was even smiling, recounting how brightly Matt and Carrie had been smiling when they left on the train.

However, when he looked up, he saw that the dining table was still a mess, and his expression darkened immediately.

He threw his car keys onto the table and stormed up to my room, pounding on the door. He yelled, "Archie Hammond! Enough with your tantrums! How dare you refuse to wash the dishes when I specifically told you to? And you didn't even touch your dinner?

"Your mom and I raised you with so much hardship, and this is how you repay us? By kicking up a fuss like this?"

Mom came up behind Dad and tugged at his arm. She even comforted him a little and said, "Alright, alright. He's probably just upset. I'll do the dishes in a bit if he doesn't want to. Don't stay mad at him any longer. You're only going to get hypertension like this. It's not worth it."

Then she reached for my door handle and grabbed it.

"Archie," she called in a perfunctory, nonchalant tone. "Come out and eat right now."

Mom also cried. She kept slapping herself until her lips split and she began bleeding from the corners of her mouth."I was a monster, Archie! I was out of my mind! I never should have taken it out on you. I never should have hit you. I never should have tied you up…"If you hate me now, won't you just come and haunt me in my dreams? You can punish me however you like… Please don't just ignore me like this… I can't take it…"Mom and Dad continued talking to themselves in their cell, slapping and hitting themselves until their faces were swollen and bloody. The prison guard saw their pitiful state and sighed before telling them to pull themselves together.I floated outside the glass window, staring at their sorry sight. Suddenly, the resentment I'd held toward them for more than a decade just dissipated like that.I suddenly stopped hating them now that I saw them living in perpetual remorse and burdened for life with the guilt of killing their own son. They'd already received th

Matt had to wake up every morning at 6:00 am and work until 8:00 pm, but he only earned about 100 dollars a day. The sun was scorchingly hot during the summer, and it made Matt so sunburned that his skin peeled off in large chunks. His back was also covered in welts. It hurt so badly that he could barely go to sleep at night. His hands were covered in blisters, and they would burst inside his gloves, making his skin stick painfully to the fabric. When he took off his gloves at the end of the day, his skin and flesh would be peeled off as well, causing him excruciating pain. And yet, the foremen yelled at him and scolded him almost every day, accusing him of being slow and lazy and even deducting his daily wages regularly. In the past, Matt never needed to even lift a finger at home. He could just come home after school and lie in bed as he gamed on his phone. Mom would be the one bringing meals to him on a tray at times. But now, he had to climb dozens of flights of stairs with d

The robot was something I'd bought for my tenth birthday for myself. I'd saved up for three months just to buy it. But the moment I brought it home, Matt snatched it from me and played with it instead. He played with it for two weeks before getting bored with it and throwing it into the trash. I picked it up, cleaned it, and hid it under my pillow, playing with it for the next six years. Now, Carrie held the robot in her arms wherever she went. Sometimes, she would crouch before my old room and speak to herself."Do you want some cantaloupe, Archie? I'll go and buy some for you, alright? "I was wrong, Archie. I'm sorry. I won't let you take my punishments anymore. Won't you please come back?"Sometimes, she would get up in the middle of the night, rush out to the 24-hour supermarket, and beg the staff to cut up a whole fresh cantaloupe for her. She'd then bring it home and pound heavily on my door, crying and yelling at me to come out and eat it.The neighbors eventually agreed

Matt lowered his head as his tears fell onto the police officer's notebook."Yes… Mom would always punish Archie every time I skipped school and went to the arcade or internet cafe…"The last time I secretly opened a bag of tortilla chips, Mom thought Archie stole it, and she beat him half to death. I didn't dare to say a word…"Carrie also nodded, crying hard with her hair in a mess and the pop star stickers on her face peeling off."The last time I skipped school, Dad sent Archie to the countryside and forced him to do hard labor for two months… I didn't dare to say anything…"They continued bringing up one incident after another, recounting all the punishments that I had taken for them over the years.Their statements took more than two hours, and by the time it was all done, it was almost time for the second half of the SAT to begin. The police officer looked at them and sighed."You can go to school and take the remainder of your test for now. We'll ask you to come in agai

I floated beside Dad and watched him make a spectacle of himself, feeling nothing in my chest. If he thought that he was being pitiful, then what about me? Who ever showed me any pity when I was tied to the bed and struggled to breathe as my life slowly slipped away?As the police car drove away, I pressed my face against the car window, watching my home of over a decade shrink smaller and smaller until it vanished out of sight. It suddenly occurred to me that I had never eaten a whole cantaloupe on my own.The wind blew into my eyes and stung them. I thought that I was going to cry again, but I had already run out of tears.I followed the police car to the police station and watched as Mom and Dad were locked up in the interrogation rooms, apologizing profusely over and over again.I stayed there for the whole night. The next morning, I heard two police officers talking to each other outside in the lounge."The victim's half-siblings are coming back today for the SAT, right?"

The moment the body bag was zipped up, Dad lunged at my body again, but two police officers stopped him."Sir, please calm down. We need to bring the victim back for an autopsy to determine the cause of death."Meanwhile, Mom sat on the couch, her head in her hands, tears streaming down her face in horror. When the police took statements from Mom and Dad, trying to get to the bottom of things, Mom still tried to hide the truth and lowered her head. "It's just… My son was behaving badly, so I tied him up to give him a fright…" she said. "But I never thought that he would struggle so much and end up tightening the rope on him like that… It was an accident, officer! We didn't mean to kill him…"The police officer sitting opposite her slammed his notebook onto the table with a dark expression on his face."An accident? We've checked the knots, and you used a sailor's knot on him! It's specifically designed to bind prisoners because the more they struggle, the tighter the knots will
