Ryker

I leaned back in the chair, letting the cold leather absorb the weight of my spine. The boardroom was quiet now, just the distant ticking of the wall clock and the hum of the building’s ventilation. The meeting had ended maybe ten minutes ago. The room still smelled faintly of the espresso someone spilled near the edge of the table, mingled with the subtle trace of perfume, Zerah’s perfume.

I could still picture her standing there, eyes wide, mouth slightly parted, her dignity crumbling under the weight of my words.

That look… God, it was satisfying.

I felt good. No, great. Her cheeks had flushed that perfect shade of humiliation, and everyone had seen it. Exactly what she deserved.

I let out a breath, slow and deliberate, drumming my fingers on the polished table in front of me.

But then,

Did I take it too far?

The question crawled into the back of my mind, uninvited, unwelcome.

I frowned.

She had been late, yes. And yes, lateness deserved consequences. But that was

ZerahSunday evening came faster than I expected.I stood in front of the mirror, staring at my reflection as I applied a final layer of gloss on my lips. My makeup was simple but clean. I didn’t want to do too much. I wasn’t going there to steal attention. I had one goal and one goal only, to find a journalist. Someone real, someone honest enough to carry a story like Elena’s without twisting it into a circus headline. The dress I picked was sleeveless and navy. It stopped just above my knees. It wasn't flashy but it wasn't dull either. It was just enough to walk into a crowd and not feel invisible. I had taken my time in the bathroom earlier, letting the warm water run down my back, hoping it’d wash away the nerves. It didn’t.Just when I was halfway done with my makeup, Ryan and Micah had burst into the room, their little faces lighting up the way they always did.“Where are you going, mommy?” Micah had asked as he crawled onto my bed.“Can we come with you?” Ryan stood beside the

RykerAlice’s room was at the end of the hall on the second floor, the same spot it had always been. Her door would be unlocked as usual, I knew I could simply knock and she would open it.Yet, I hesitated, stopping in front of it. I didn't even know why. Perhaps it was the guilt that ate me alive that kept me stalling. Perhaps I was just tired. But if there was anything I knew, it was that I had to see her.I knocked twice. After a few seconds, her voice came through.“Come in,”Taking a deep breath and braced myself before I opened the door and stepped in. The faint scent of lilac and vanilla wafted into my senses immediately as the light revealed the place.I knew the place like the back of my hand, although not for the reasons others would believe. Sometimes, when the pain from her treatments were too much, she would plead with me to stay over until she fell asleep. I would always agree, waiting until I was sure she was at peace before returning back to my penthouse or work. It

RykerI stared at Nathan for a long second, water dripping from my face, my palms pressed against the edge of the sink. I grabbed the towel, wiped myself down, and finally muttered again, “I came here to visit my Aunt and Uncle. You were the one that barged into this room.”He scoffed. It was a bitter laugh that followed right after. “You know what I’m talking about. After what you've done.” he spat.“Honestly, I don't. At this point, you could be referring to a million things. You’ll have to be specific,” I said, drying my hands.Nathan stepped further into the bathroom and closed the door behind him. I could already tell this conversation wasn't going to be good, for both of us.As he leaned in, I braced myself for what he was going to do or say next. Perhaps punch me or threaten me again. It could be either or both.He did neither though, eyes narrowing.“Why do you want to make a public apology?” he asked.Surprise twinged in me. So he'd heard.I let out a small breath before I

RykerI sat staring at nothing in particular. The familiar furniture and air of the Falloway mansion pressed down on me. This place… it used to feel like home, it still did. Growing up here made me who I was today. I could still perceive the scent of aged wood, leather polish, and that lavender air freshener my Aunt always loved, nothing had changed since the last time I was here.My fingers wouldn’t stop tapping against my thighs. Sometimes fast, other times slower. I couldn’t stay still. I had no idea what to expect. I was just waiting, but for what exactly? For comfort? For forgiveness? For some sense of direction? The house was quiet, but not the comforting kind. It was heavy, like it knew the weight of what I was carrying. Upstairs, I could hear the faint creak of footsteps. They were coming down.I stood up before I even thought about it. It was my aunt, Mrs Holloway. She reached me first. Without saying a word and pulled me in. Her arms wrapped tight around me, like they

ZerahI was supposed to be here for ice cream. That was the plan, just a small treat to get me over the edge. Something sweet to distract me from the madness that had been our lives. But of course, their machine was broken…again. "When was it not broken?" I joked as I sipped my cup of coffee, coffee wasn't exactly the plan but things didn't exactly go the way I wanted it to.I had come to this place with Micah and Ryan once. I really didn't know what to expect.“They should just take the sign down at this point.” Nathan chuckled into his cup.I laughed too, forgetting for a second how heavy my chest had felt all morning, but I laughed with a mouthful of coffee, and a little bit dripped from the corner of my lips.Heat rushed to my cheeks. I reached for a napkin, embarrassed, but before I could grab one, Nathan leaned over and gently wiped it off with a towel.I froze at his gesture, forcing back the urge to recoil. It wasn’t just a gesture. It was the way he did it, so soft, so care

ZerahAt first, I didn’t say anything,Keeping my hands firmly on the wheel, I counted to myself in the silence. No tension. But the silence in the car with Nathan was too heavy. The kind of weight wrapped around my neck and made the breathing feel like a task.Nathan hadn’t said a word since we got in. He simply stared out the window. I couldn't understand what was going on inside his head. I didn’t have the guts to ask him what he was thinking and maybe it wasn’t my place.Still, I stole a glance at him anyway. I ended up looking a second too long. Thankfully he wasn't looking my way but his jaw was clenched like he was biting back a scream or something. With the day he acted, I already had an idea. He'd somehow found a way and now knew what I knew or at least knew I was trying to help Ryker. Was he mad at me for coming here? At Ryker? A strange sense of desperation came onto me I let out a soft chuckle before I even realized it.Nathan turned his head, eyebrows raised. “What’
