Zerah

The elevator doors parted with a soft ding, and I stepped out into the quiet lobby. My heels echoed off the marble tiles as I walked past the reception desk, nodding briefly at the guard, who barely looked up from his phone. I pushed through the heavy glass doors and onto the pavement outside.

The night air hit my skin immediately, cool, clean, and just brisk enough to raise a light chill along my arms. I inhaled slowly, letting it settle into my lungs, grounding me. The sky was a deep shade of blue now, fading into navy, with the last golden hints of sunlight disappearing behind the buildings. I looked up briefly. Street lights flickered on above me, one after the other.

I pulled my cardigan tighter around me, adjusting the strap of my purse over my shoulder. The traffic was steady but not loud, just the distant hum of engines, tires against pavement, and the occasional car horn.

My phone buzzed in my purse. I didn’t look at it. I knew it had to be my sitter asking when I’d be

  • Losing Ryker: The Billionaire's Second Chance    Chapter 63

ZerahThree hours passed in the blink of an eye. Three hours since I'd sent the message to Elena. I had been waiting patiently. There was still no response. The rest of the work I did went by in a blur, completely detached from my consciousness. With every single minute, I always traced back to my phone. Every single time, no new response had popped up and it made my chest heavier.Had she seen it? Was she refusing to answer, did she not want to talk to me anymore? The office's continuous buzzing swarmed in my ears nonstop. Amidst the sea of typing and chatting, I still felt lost.“Ma'am?” I looked up at the call to find one of my co-workers looking at me, slightly nervous. “It's lunch time. Do you by any chance want to come with us?” she asked tentatively. I was completely dumbfounded.“Oh,” I said. Turning to the cubicles where most of my co-workers were packing up, practically scrambling out of the building. That explained the sudden noises. I hadn’t even realized it was noon alr

ZerahOn my way back to the office, I strode forward, uncaring of whatever anyone else said. If anyone else dared to approach me, I wouldn't take it lightly.Passing through the lone hallway, a faint sound rang through, coming from a small corner in the hall. From the sounds alone it had to be the news. Shutting my eyes, I tried to ignore-“The new statement from James Robinson has changed everything—”I froze in place, ice drilling through me as the words echoed through. Had I caught that right?James Robinson? The steaming mug of coffee in my hand weighed on my wrist but I couldn't bother. Not after hearing that name. Elena's words…her tears, echoed in mind. What the hell did James Robinson have to do with Ryker's mess?Turning towards the source I found the person immediately. The news was coming from a phone with the woman behind it standing against a corner alone. I moved closer to her, gaining her attention. She didn't look surprised, even shifting slightly to let me watch. it

ZerahAfter what felt like an eternity later, I had returned to home base. Geronimo cooperation. In this place, with the small number of people working there, it was easier. They were equally tense from the news, but knew nothing of what had transpired at headquarters. Unlike the scathing words I'd received, here was more familiar, more welcoming. And with all things aside I was willing to take any sliver of peace I could find.I sat behind my desk, the blue light from my computer casted a sharp glow on my face. My eyes were glued to the screen, trying to write up the layers of reports missed over the past few days. At least, doing this would give me a sliver of an achievement, proving that I wasn't crumbling. And yet that woman's words still flooded my mind. My jaw clenched as it echoed again, halting my typing. I shouldn't care. I doubted she could even survive half of the things I've had to endure. The fact that it lingered on and replayed in my head bothered me. I shifted uncomf

Zerah The words echoed like a slap across my face. My entire body stilled. My breath caught in my throat as I turned, slow and measured, jaw tightening, my heart thudding somewhere between fury and disbelief , already knowing whoever said it was looking for a reaction. The voice belonged to a redhead with her hair twisted tightly into a bun so severe it looked like it might snap her face clean back. She stood with her arms crossed, a smug little smirk pulling at her lips like she'd just asked the most innocent question in the world. Her eyes was sparkling, not with curiosity, but with cruelty. "Excuse me?" I said, eyebrows lifting, giving her one chance to take it back, to tell me I misheard, blinking as if I needed to clear the absurdity from the air. But no. She doubled down, repeating it louder this time, as if she was proud of her ignorance. "You heard me, I said, are you screwing Nathan Hart?" I blinked, stunned. My fists curled at my sides, nails digging into my palm

Zerah The flashes from the cameras were blinding. They popped like tiny bursts of lightning, one after the other, each more jarring than the last. All around me, voices were firing questions like bullets. Reporters stood shoulder to shoulder and they were pressing in, microphones extended like weapons. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t speak. I could only remain frozen, caught in the storm. "Miss, do you have anything to say about Mr. Davidson’s actions?" one of them asked, his voice too loud and too sharp. Before I could even process it, another one stepped forward, shoving his mic inches from my mouth. "What kind of man do you believe Mr. Davidson really is?" My throat tightened. My hands trembled by my sides. I blinked rapidly, trying to find something, anything, to latch onto. But my mind had gone blank, wiped clean by the pressure, by the eyes, by the noise. I could hear myself breathing, shallow and erratic. Then, somehow, through the chaos, I managed to speak. "I..

Zerah The car sped down the highway, smooth and fast, the cityscape flying past the tinted windows. I sat stiffly in the back seat, my arms folded tightly over my chest. I could still hear the echo of the news anchor’s voice in my ears. Every second of it felt like a strange blend of disbelief. I hadn’t even done what I came to the school to do. The moment I saw the video, I just had to leave. It was like all the strength I had mustered up just collapsed the second I saw the scandal that Ryker had caused. “Shit,” I cursed out loud as a dull ache filled my head. I rubbed my temple, the pressure building in my skull. I shouldn't care. Should be angry "Ma’am, everything alright back there?" the driver asked, catching my distressed look in the rearview mirror. "Yes," I said, too quickly. My voice was tight, clipped. "Just keep driving." He nodded and turned the radio up a little, filling the silence with soft jazz. I leaned my head back, eyes fluttering shut for a moment, but rest
