“I really can't understand what is going on,” I said out loud to no one in particular. How could things with Doctor Cameron get so out of hand. I mean he has gone too far this time, I thought. “Hey girl, you OK,” Shan softly asked as she was walking up to me after we finished our shift. “Um, I guess. It's just kind of crazy,” I replied. I don't know if I should still want to work here anymore. I don't think I'll be able to see Doctor Cameron every day. “I know,” Shan answered softly.

  • Losing the Lonely   Chapter 85 — Something Off

HunterShe didn't come to breakfast. I didn’t point it out. Johanna had apparently survived her first night at Purple Gardens. I'd seen her briefly when I came downstairs, sitting at the table with Taryn and talking considerably more than I preferred anyone to talk before I'd eaten. The kitchen was worse. Two additional people were preparing food. Someone from the medical staff passed through the hallway. A housekeeper entered through one door while another left through the opposite one. Too many people. Yesterday, the woman and I had agreed on that. So, when she didn't appear for breakfast, I assumed she'd reached the same conclusion I had and simply done something about it. She was probably eating somewhere quiet. Or hadn't bothered eating at all. Neither would surprise me.The woman still hadn't appeared after I finished breakfast. I walked through the rear entrance and followed the stone path toward the gardens. I wasn't looking for her. I simply happened to take the route we norm

  • Losing the Lonely   Chapter 84 — Arrival

Mr. GreenJohanna talked for most of the drive.I suspected nerves. She commented on the trees. The road. The length of the driveway. The gates. The gardens. Then the main house became visible. She leaned forward."That's the ordinary house?""Yes."She stared at me."You're ridiculous.""I've been told.""By Mom?""Among others."She looked through the window again."It's beautiful.""It serves its purpose.""Normal people say thank you.""I own it.""That's not what I meant."I knew. The vehicle stopped at the front entrance.I exited first.Johanna followed. Two staff members approached to retrieve her belongings.I immediately noticed something was wrong. Not danger.Disruption.The staff were moving differently.More carefully.A groundskeeper near the front path looked toward the house, then quickly away.Taryn appeared through the entrance.Hunter was behind him.The woman followed.I saw the bandage.Everything else became irrelevant.White gauze covered the upper portion of h

  • Losing the Lonely   Chapter 83 — Adjustment

HunterWe were halfway through our morning run when I decided Purple Gardens had too many people."Nine."She didn't look at me."Eight.""Nine.""The man by the fountain was here yesterday.""Doesn't count.""Then why did you count him?""Because I don't like him."She glanced at me."He hasn't spoken to you.""Exactly. Suspicious."She shook her head and kept running.I caught up easily.Purple Gardens had changed overnight. Not dramatically. The property was too large for that. But there were people where there hadn't been people before. Two additional kitchen staff had arrived before sunrise. Someone was carrying linens through the main house when we came downstairs. Medical supplies had been delivered yesterday afternoon, and there were more groundskeepers moving around the property than usual. They weren't security.I knew security.Security watched without appearing to watch. They knew where we were and generally had the good sense to stay out of our way. These people were staf

  • Losing the Lonely   Chapter 82 — Somewhere Quiet

Mr. GreenI arrived at Green Building shortly after seven.I'd spent considerably less time in my office over the past several weeks than I preferred. Purple Gardens required more of my attention than usual. Hunter and the woman were progressing quickly with their training, additional security had been necessary, and preparations were now being made for Johanna's arrival.Once circumstances stabilized, I intended to return to my normal schedule.Taryn entered my office without knocking."Lewis will be unavailable for the next two months," he stated. I continued reading the document in front of me. "Singapore," I questioned. Taryn stopped and said, "Yes." "Forty-eight hours,” I questioned. "Yes," he answered. I turned the page. "You could occasionally allow me to finish a sentence." "It would be inefficient," I informed him. "He questioned the order." "I assumed he had," I stated. "Repeatedly." "Then Singapore is generous," I offered. Taryn remained silent. I looked up. There was nothi

Marcus I saw her again. At least, I thought I did. That distinction should have made me feel better. It didn't. I had spent enough years convincing myself that what happened was over. There were facts I couldn't change, mistakes I couldn't undo, and one death I couldn't take back. My sister was dead. I knew that. I'd known it for years. Yet twice now, I had looked across a street and seen a woman who made every part of me question what I knew. The first time, I called out to her. She stopped. That was what I couldn't get past. She stopped. If I'd mistaken some random woman for my sister, she should have kept walking. Maybe she would have looked at me like I was crazy. Maybe she would have ignored me completely. She hadn't. Her entire body had gone still. Like the name meant something. Then she left. The second time was worse. I saw her near Orion's shop. I called the name again. And again, she reacted. I couldn't sleep afterward. I had spent years carrying guilt over what happened to

TarynI stared at the thin cut across Mr. Green’s cheek. He continued reviewing the documents on his desk as if there was nothing unusual about his appearance. I waited. He ignored me. I continued waiting. Eventually, Mr. Green looked up. “What?” he asked evenly. “You're bleeding, sir,” I stated. “I am aware.” “Your cheek.” “I know where it is.” I nodded. “Very good, sir.” I remained where I was.Mr. Green returned his attention to the document. I waited another ten seconds. “Taryn.” “Yes, sir?” “Either say what you intend to say or leave.” I looked at the cut again. “The woman has a similar injury.” His eyes lifted slowly. “Does she?” There was absolutely nothing in his tone. Interesting. “Yes, sir,” I answered. “Her upper arm. There may be others I haven't seen.” “Hmm,” he acknowledged, giving nothing away. I remained quiet. He returned to reading.“Hunter also informed me there was a knife involved,” I added. Mr. Green stopped turning the page. “He talks too much.” “Only when he be

  • Losing the Lonely   Chapter 6: Falling Asleep

Upon waking I took a shower and got ready for work, I decided to text Orion. TEXT: Lara: Good Evening! After sending the text I was wondering what I wanted to eat. The thing is, I never know what I want to eat. Basically, it’s never fun or fulfilling to cook for myself. It feels lonely. So, I

Orion“Bossman, why you here, man” Marcus asked as he spotted me walking into the shop. “Why not? If I don’t come, you guys might get into trouble and burn this place down” I said in a teasing way. “Ha ha, not even, you really helped all of us out, so we owe you. There is no way we would intenti

  • Losing the Lonely   Chapter 4: Day 1 at work: Lara

LaraI’m starting to get to know my way around the hospital. Being in a new environment is exciting, but patients are still the same. It’s a good thing that I like what I do. Even though I only draw blood from these patients, it makes me feel that I am helping in some way. A very small way. Eve

  • Losing the Lonely   Chapter 3: Alone with Orion

LaraAs I watched Eliza walking out I kind of felt uncomfortable. Bring on the social awkwardness. No matter how old I am, I will always be this. “Do you want dessert” Orion asked. “Um, no thank you” I responded. I looked at the table and most of the food was gone. I really wanted to have desse
