Natalie’s pov

His dark eyes flicked from Malcolm to me, calculating, and looking like he was about to explode.

For a moment, we came to a standstill with no one speaking. Then Malcolm turned to him, his voice sounding cool and detached as he broke the silence.

“You’re on Valen’s team, right?” he asked. “I didn’t know house visits were part of your role.”

Richard let out a low chuckle, trying for casual, but it hit the air with a dry receipion. “I was just checking in.”

“Do you check in on all your female coworkers at night?” Malcolm’s tone didn’t rise, but each word landed like a hammer. “Or just the ones you think are too polite to call you out?”

Richard’s smirk faltered. “You’ve got the wrong idea.”

“I doubt that,” Malcolm said flatly. Then he looked at me again, slower this time, taking in the tension in my shoulders, the nervous grip I had on the dish towel. His jaw tightened. “Are you okay?”

I nodded. “Yeah. I’m fine. It’s just…he was leaving.”

Richard didn’t budge. “Actually, I

VALENI watched as Natalie slipped out of my office, folder in hand.I'd told her not to worry, that I was capable of handling things and that I would deal with my mother. Now that she was gone and all that remained was the cold echo of my own words, I shrank under the weight of my promise. How was I supposed to handle my mother? She wasn't the type of person to be handled, at least not easily and I knew how difficult it would be to convince her. Still, I had to try. Our company hung on the balance, and so did Malcolm's life. Anyone else would agree it was a sensible compromise— to record a video beforehand, so that Natalie could go ahead and donate her kidney. A win-win situation. But not my mother. I could already picture the incredulous look on her face and I dreaded it. Still, it was something I had to deal with.I jumped into my car, pushing thoughts of all the possible ways our conversation could go to the back of my mind as I sped towards my family's mansion. My hands tightened

NATALIEI stared blankly at the cursor blinking on my laptop screen. It felt like a countdown clock to an inevitable fate, to Malcolm's life. What if I couldn't make this work? It was a silly thought, but one that pressed down heavily on my chest. I knew all that I needed to do, all that I needed to say and yet, only a half finished script stared back at me from my screen. Where had all the words, and my confidence gone?My fingers lingered over the keypad as I deleted and rewrote the same introduction I'd been on for the past two hours. Nothing felt sufficient for a competition such as this. I'd looked through the folder Valen gave me earlier and it was more than anything I expected.Malcolm was right. This competition was in a league of its own. So what if I flopped? The panel was probably going to be biased towards the competitors present and I needed something really gripping to get them to even remember my presentation.I deleted the paragraph for the hundredth time and then rewr

NATALIEI sat beside Malcolm's bed, cradling his hand in mine, the same position I had been for the past hour.It was two days until the competition. Two days until the day Malcolm would finally be able to get the life changing surgery. And still, I had no idea what to do. If this was a test from the universe to see just how far I could be stretched thin, then it was certainly winning at this. The ICU smelled like antiseptic and disinfectant but I had become so used to it that I no longer smelled it. I nodded longer heard the beeping of the machines either, at least not in the distracting way it used to be before. Now, it seemed normal, like part of the air we breathed.Malcolm's skin felt cool but at least he awake today. Exhausted and lame, but still awake. He stared at me through half closed eyes but he said nothing. I knew he was too weak to speak but it didn't matter to me. Just being here by his side and watching the rise and fall of his chest, a confirmation that he was still b

NATALIEI sat in the doctor's office, waiting. It was the only thing I did these days. Waited endlessly and even I was unsure what I was waiting for. Anxiety grabbed me by the neck and refused to let go.The doctor looked up from his tablet. "Malcolm is stable enough for the surgery now. We'll monitor him a bit more but we've booked a date and an OR," he said.I leaned forward, perching at the edge of my seat. Since the day I discovered I was a match, I had known this day would come and yet, it still felt life-changing. It really was happening.I felt my heart pounding harder as I inhaled deeply. The air smelled faintly of disinfectant subdued by the air freshener the doctor had used in his office."The kidney transfer surgery is confirmed for next week." He said in his ever calm tone and glanced down at his tablet again. "On Friday."I nodded briefly before the words actually settled in my brain.Next Friday. The day of the competition. For a moment, I just blinked at him, staring bl

NATALIEWhen I walked out into the hallway, I saw Valen first. His hair was damp, falling over his face and a Tee shirt he had obviously thrown on in a hurry. He was standing with Grandmother, talking quietly with a huge frown on his face. I exhaled a slight breath of relief when I saw that the others had gone. I was already too exhausted to deal with any more of their constant bickering.Valen lifted his head and his eyes locked on me. I expected a smile, the way he usually did but he looked annoyed. Grandmother looked at me with tired eyes and smiled. Before I could reach her, Valen was already approaching me in quick strides. He looked just as tired and I held back from asking where he had been from the beginning."Natalie," he said in a gruff tone. "Is it true?" He asked. In his tone, I heard the pointed need for whatever he was asking about to not be true.I blinked. "What?""That you're donating your kidney to Malcolm. It's not true, is it?" He asked.I didn't expect him to fall

NATALIEI followed behind the doctor, keeping the pace and wrapping my arms around myself. The hospital suddenly felt too cold, the corridors stretched for way too long, the fluorescent lights above were too harsh, slicing the world in front of me. I felt like an animal being led to the slaughter, and the impeccable white walls did little to soothe my roaring nerves. The doctor took off his coat as we stopped in front of a door and I realized the hospital wasn't cold after all. It was just me, my pulse jumping over itself, my breath small and uneven.I was about to find out if I could save Malcolm and the thought made my insides clench painfully. Inside my chest, there was a violent rioting, a thudding so forceful, it startled me. What if my heart exploded?"This is the waiting area for donors," the doctor said as he pushed open the door to reveal a small room of startlingly white walls.I stepped in, feeling like a psych ward patient. "We'll speed things up so you won't have to wait
