Chapter 3

“Sign here.” Yvonne flipped the papers to the last page, hiding the content on the first few pages as she handed them to Justin. Her voice was so soft that it was almost inaudible.

Justin glanced at it, assuming it was just another request for jewelry or property. He wanted to end the farce as quickly as possible, so he signed without a second thought.

Once it was done, he looked up. “Sophia’s not in good health, and no one is at her place to take care of her. She’ll need to stay here for a few days.”

Yvonne nodded numbly. “As you wish.”

She took the papers and left without looking back.

At the law firm, the lawyer carefully checked the divorce agreement and nodded. “The signature is valid, Ms. Johansson. After about a month, your marriage with Mr. Quinn will be legally dissolved.”

Yvonne gripped the papers so tightly her fingertips turned white.

Finally… it was about to end.

That evening, when Yvonne returned to the villa, the living room was filled with laughter.

Sophia sat on the couch with Milton and Travis on either side, leaning against her as she told them a story.

“And in the end, the prince kissed the princess awake, and they lived happily ever after.” Sophia gently stroked the two children’s heads.

Milton looked up. “Ms. Shaw, you’re so much gentler than our mom.”

Travis nodded. “I wish you could be our mom…”

Yvonne stood frozen at the doorway. Her chest felt as though it had been stabbed. She kept her face blank and headed upstairs to take a shower in the guest bathroom. The warm water washed over her body but could not chase away the chill in her heart.

She closed her eyes and told herself that she did not have to worry. That wish of theirs would soon come true.

She had barely settled into bed when the mattress dipped on the other side. Justin had finished his shower and climbed in beside her.

Yvonne faced away from him, completely still.

Suddenly, he leaned over, wrapping an arm around her waist. His lips brushed the back of her neck. She froze for a moment, then shoved him away sharply!

Justin frowned.“You’ve gotten your compensation. Your brother didn’t suffer any serious harm. How long are you planning to make a scene?”

When Yvonne was about to speak, there was a knock on the door. Milton’s little head peeked in. “Dad! The weather forecast said there’s going to be a thunderstorm tonight! Didn’t you say Ms. Shaw is scared of thunder?”

Travis squeezed in behind him. “Dad, come keep Ms. Shaw company! She’s scared!”

Justin glanced at the darkening sky outside and got up without hesitation. Before he left, he tossed a single sentence over his shoulder, “You’ll be sleeping alone tonight.”

The door was not fully closed, and from the next room came the faint sound of laughter.

“Justin, you’re here?” Sophia’s voice was gentle.

“Dad! The story Ms. Shaw told us was so good!” Milton exclaimed.

Travis whined, “Dad, can Ms. Shaw stay here forever?”

Justin gave a soft laugh. “Alright.”

Yvonne lay in bed, listening to their laughter. She slowly closed her eyes.

The next morning, when Yvonne went downstairs, the kitchen was filled with cheerful chatter.

Justin stood at the counter with an apron on, his long fingers gripping a spatula. Sophia was beside him, leaning in to catch the aroma from time to time. Her eyes curved into crescents.

Milton and Travis gathered around their legs, looking up and chattering nonstop.

“Justin, I didn’t expect you to still remember the food I like after all these years.” Sophia’s voice was gentle, carrying a hint of emotion in her voice.

Justin glanced at her. He had never shown Yvonne such gentleness. “Not a single moment forgotten.”

He plated the sunny-side-up eggs and pushed them toward her. “Try it. See if it tastes different.”

Sophia took a bite. Her brows and eyes relaxed. “Even better than before.”

Milton immediately raised his hand. “Ms. Shaw, I’ll cook for you when Dad’s busy!”

Travis bounced along, “Me too! I’ll make it even better than Dad!”

Sophia laughed and ruffled the boys’ hair. Even Justin’s normally stern features softened with a smile as he watched them.

Yvonne stood at the top of the stairs. She gave a wry, self-mocking smile. Justin was born with a silver spoon and had been living in luxury, while their two sons were pampered and fussy. All these years, they had kept her diligently running the household.

Yet…

Even someone like Justin, whose hands had never touched kitchen equipment before, could cook for the one he loved. Even children as spoiled and demanding as Milton and Travis could behave with such consideration.

Yvonne had always been humble and servile in front of them, while they willingly bent for Sophia. The one who loved more was always left utterly defeated.

She returned to the country with Justin. Inside the villa, the maids bustled about. Milton and Travis ran straight downstairs when they heard the noises.“Mom!”“Mom! Are you staying this time? We were wrong before. Mom, we love you the most!”Even though Travis still struggled to speak, seeing her stirred a deep yearning he could no longer suppress.Yvonne noticed the injuries on their bodies, but what did it matter to her? She had not just left Justin. She had left both Milton and Travis too.Despite the kids’ eager words, she replied only with a detached calm. After just a few sentences, it was as though they had already realized the truth, their eyes welling up with unshed tears.“Mom, do you really not want us anymore…”Yvonne glanced at them, about to reply, but Justin interrupted, “Don’t say that. I need to show her something first. You two stay here and behave.”His voice was gentle, and Yvonne simply followed him without a word.He led her to the basement. It was the

Unfortunately, Justin realized his mistake far too late, which allowed her to leave. However, he had thought everything through now. If Yvonne could forgive him, he would do anything she asked. The thought of her returning to his side filled Justin with a quiet, overwhelming happiness that spread through his chest. It made him ache with anticipation to see her again. After an eight-hour flight, Justin finally touched down. Heart pounding with impatience, he raced toward the place they had agreed upon, eager to see the woman he loved. The meeting place was a small café. When Justin pushed open the door, the bell jingled, and he immediately saw Yvonne sitting in the corner.A month had passed since he last saw her, but it felt like an entire year of torment. Justin was struck by a dizzying sense of disbelief when he finally saw her.She had changed. When she had been by his side before, she had always dressed simply to take care of the household. Now, she wore casual clothes. He

As excessive blood loss took its toll, Justin's breathing grew weaker and weaker. Someone hurriedly lifted him up, but all he could think about was finding Yvonne.Through the haze, fragments of the past began to replay before his eyes. When he learned that Sophia had died in an accident, he drowned himself in alcohol every day, so lost and broken that he was barely human. Even his family had given up on him.It was Yvonne who had stayed by his side. She watched over him and cared for him. When he drank himself unconscious, she made him a hangover tonic. When he suffered from stomach bleeding, she stayed up all night to take care of him. She even stepped in to handle company matters for him, devoting her whole heart to him.It was not that he had not noticed. It was just that Sophia’s death had hit him too hard.Until one day, when he mistook her for someone else and pinned her beneath him, he was finally forced to face their relationship.Back then, did he love Yvonne?Later, o

Justin spoke with absolute certainty. Sophia clutched her head, crying and screaming like she had gone mad. It felt as though she had never known this man before. The suffocating pressure Justin gave off made it hard for her to breathe.“Justin, what are you trying to do? Everything I did… I did it so we could be together!”“When did I ever say I would be with you? Yvonne will be my wife for the rest of her life. You can never replace her.”Justin's tone was cold, like the calm before a storm. It made Sophia tremble. Tears streamed down her face as she stared at him, shaking.“You clearly didn’t care about Yvonne! If you cared, would you have slept in the same bed with me? If you cared, would you have let her hands be ruined? If you cared, would you have treated me so well? You have feelings for me too! You don't love Yvonne as much as you think you do!”She screamed at the top of her lungs, only to be met with an even colder gaze.“And you dare compare yourself to Yvonne? What d

Justin turned away coldly. Just as he reached the door, a scream rang out behind him. He turned around and saw Sophia rushing at him with a scalpel, driving it viciously into his body.Having lost her last shred of hope, the hatred in her eyes was unmistakable, almost splitting them wide open. Her expression had turned completely deranged. Her frail body was still smeared with traces of the aborted fetus. With bloodshot eyes, she yanked the scalpel out and stabbed again. The metallic scent of blood thickened in the air, but she did not care. Her gaze was fixed solely on the man who had tormented her all this time. This was her only chance for revenge.“Justin! Let’s die together!”Hatred consumed her entirely. As she watched the blade sink into his body, she felt a twisted sense of satisfaction. When she tried to stab him again, Justin grabbed the scalpel tightly. The blade cut into his palm, drawing blood. With a sudden burst of force, he flung the crazed woman aside, his eyes

Sophia was dragged to the basement. She had been locked up for three full days. There was no food, no water, and not even a sliver of light. She could not tell day from night, nor how much time had passed.By the time her mind had drifted to the edge of delirium, the heavy door finally swung open.A blinding light flooded in. Sophia did not react at first, staring dumbly at the doorway.A man’s gaze lingered on her from above.Slowly, her dulled mind registered the attention, and her eyes focused toward the source. It was Justin. For a moment, hope surged through her. She scrambled to her feet and clutched at his legs.“Justin! I know I was wrong, I really do! Please forgive me! I’ll change! I’ll never do those things again! It was all my fault before. Just forgive me and I’ll do anything! Justin, please save me! Don’t do this! I’m so scared… So scared… And… And… And I’m already carrying your child!”Her voice cracked with tears. The fear in her eyes was not fake, but it was mi
