Chapter 2

Author: Snowy Peaks
Along the way, Josiah and Meredith kept up a lively conversation.

They talked about shooting angles, drone flight paths, which stretches of highway were best for sunset shots, and what they should title the documentary if they turned this trip into one. They decided on "Escaping Into the Wild Before Graduation".

I sat in the back seat with my tablet on my lap, reviewing the itinerary I had put together.

I had every detail down—our departure and arrival times, where we'd stop for gas and meals, which stretches of the drive would have no cell service, and which guesthouses required a call ahead to ensure the hot water would be ready.

I tried to speak up several times. "The owner of the guesthouse tonight said that the road up ahead will be narrow. We need to get there before dark."

But nobody heard me.

As we were stopping for lunch, I sent Josiah a restaurant I'd looked up in advance. "This place has a lot of bad reviews. Many people complained about its hygiene. Let's go to the one next to it instead."

Meredith took one glance at the signboard and said, "I want to have lunch here. Bad reviews just mean it's authentic. Popular spots are usually disappointing."

Josiah laughed. "Alright, your call."

I frowned. "But you've been having stomach—"

"Calliope, can you not be so high-strung when we're out having fun? It's just a meal. It's not that big of a deal," he said with a hint of impatience in his voice.

In the end, they ordered a bunch of spicy and greasy food, and Josiah devoured them with obvious enjoyment.

Half an hour later, his face went pale from gastricitis. I fished out antacids from my bag, poured him a glass of water, and handed them to him.

Meredith sat beside him, chin propped on her hand, and chuckled. "Calliope, you're really acting like you're his mom."

Josiah paused mid-sip. Then he laughed too. "Yeah, she's always been like this. I guess she's gotten used to taking care of me."

My fingers froze mid-air. I was just concerned about Josiah, but coming from them, it sounded like some out-of-place joke.

We pushed on in the afternoon. The weather turned bad and fog rolled in along the mountain. I reminded Josiah, "Don't drive too fast. There are sharp bends up ahead."

Meredith, adjusting her camera settings, said without looking up, "Calliope, if you're scared, just close your eyes and sleep. Don't mess with Josiah's focus."

Josiah chuckled and added, "You heard her. Close your eyes."

I gripped the seatbelt and stayed silent.

The fog thickened as we went, and my carsickness got much worse. My stomach churned violently, and cold sweat broke out on my forehead.

I rummaged through my bag for motion-sickness pills, only to remember that when I'd sorted out the meds that morning, I'd put them in the front storage compartment.

I called out to Josiah, "Hey, can we pull over at the next rest stop? I need to get some medicine."

He grunted in acknowledgment. The music in the car was loud, and Meredith was excitedly showing him the photos she'd just taken. "Look at this one! It has such a cinematic feel. If we edit this trip right, it's definitely going to blow up."

Josiah leaned over to look. "Pretty impressive, Ms. Sloan."

The two of them burst out laughing together.

I leaned back in the rear seat, closed my eyes, and tried to endure the waves of nausea rolling through me.

I stopped in my tracks.Meredith looked at me for a while. "Back then, I really did look down on you. I thought you were soft, clingy, and spineless. But later, I realized I wasn't much better than you. I acted like I dared to do anything, but really, I was just trying to prove that I deserved to stand next to Josiah more than you did."She let out a self-deprecating laugh. "That was pretty pathetic."I stayed silent. She went on, "That day at the rest stop, I deliberately didn't remind him."She met my gaze without flinching when I looked up at her. "I saw you get out of the car. And when he started the engine, I knew you weren't back yet. But I didn't say a word. I wanted to see if he would keep going without you."My fingers slowly curled into fists. So that was it. I had suspected as much, but hearing it out loud still felt like a prick to my heart."I'm sorry. This apology came really late, and it probably doesn't change anything, but I still wanted to say it," Meredith sai

That night, I got a call from my mom. She asked if I was getting used to life away from home. I told her I was doing well.Mom was silent for a moment, then said softly, "Callie, I've actually wanted to tell you this for a while. Every time you came back from a trip with Josiah, you never seemed very happy. But you liked him, so I was afraid saying too much would upset you."My eyes stung a little. "Mom, was I really stupid back then?"Mom chuckled. "No, that wasn't being stupid. When you're young, you always have to walk a road you think you have no choice but to take. But once you're past it, you're past it."I hummed in response. After hanging up, I leaned against the window and looked out at the sea.Nights in Mooncrest Bay were always peaceful. In the distance, fishing boats bobbed on the sea with their lights on, scattered like tiny, unyielding stars. It was then that Josiah sent me a long message. He said he had returned to Fairmont, and that while going through his co

Josiah stayed in Mooncrest Bay for five days.He would show up around the agency every single day. Some days, he'd bring me a beverage, some days, he'd bring me food, and some days, he'd show up with snacks that I'd casually mentioned enjoying in the past.If all this had happened half a year ago, I would've been so happy I couldn't sleep. But now, it just felt absurd. On the fifth day, Meredith came to see me. This time, she came alone. She stood at the entrance of the old street, looking quite pale. "You win, Calliope."I looked at her in confusion. She sneered. "Josiah cut all ties with me. Our project at the Windmere Plains is dead, and the graduation documentary isn't happening anymore. All he thinks about now is you. Are you happy?""No, I'm not, because I was never competing with you."She flinched, her expression turning sour instantly. "Don't give me that holier-than-thou act! You barely have to do anything, and he still likes you. Why? "I climbed mountains with him,

Josiah stopped because he couldn't finish the sentence.I finished it for him. "You just enjoyed me taking care of you, while looking down on the small things I did. You were used to me following behind you, but you resented that I didn't keep up. You needed me to handle all the logistics, yet you never thought any of it was worth acknowledging."Tears fell from Josiah's eyes. This was the first time I'd ever seen him cry. He had always been proud and confident before, as if the whole world were waiting for him.But now, he stood in the damp evening breeze of Mooncrest Bay with reddened eyes like those of a child who'd done something wrong.Had this been in the past, I would've softened. I would've wiped his tears, told him it was okay, swallowed all my grievances, and gone back with him.But this time, I simply took a step back. "Let's break up, Josiah."His head jerked up. "No!""I'm not asking for your permission."His voice trembled. "Callie, don't do this. I'll change. Fr

Meredith arrived that evening, a few hours after Josiah. The moment she saw me, she walked straight up. "Calliope, don't you think you've made your point? Josiah came all this way looking for you, and the entire Windmere Plains shoot is ruined. The collaboration fell through. Do you have any idea how long we'd been preparing for that project?"I looked straight at her. "What does that have to do with me?"She clearly hadn't expected that response, and her expression darkened instantly. "What does it have to do with you? You made the itinerary, and you were the one who canceled the bookings! You knew perfectly well those rooms were impossible to rebook during peak season, but you deliberately canceled them anyway. You were just trying to make things difficult for us, weren't you?"I almost laughed at her tone of righteous indignation. "Meredith, I booked those rooms and paid the deposits with my own money. When you left me at the rest stop, did you think about how I'd get to the h

I felt a gentle jolt within me.So my thoughtfulness wasn't boring, and my caution wasn't a buzzkill. They only became flaws in the eyes of the wrong person. That evening, I took a photo of the sunset over the sea and posted it to my social media. It was just the photo, with no caption to go along with it. Ten minutes later, Josiah liked it. Then he messaged me. "I'm coming to see you."I did not reply to him.The next afternoon, he actually showed up outside the agency. He must have traveled a long way, because his hair looked messy, and he had dark circles under his eyes. When he saw me, he first let out a breath of relief, then a hurt look came over him. "Callie, you've lost weight."I looked at him, and for a moment I felt a pang. Josiah was still as good-looking as ever. Dressed in a simple white t-shirt and black pants, he still stood out from the crowd.I'd loved him for four years. It was impossible for me not to feel anything for him. But that feeling was like looking
