Chapter 1

Author: Nancy Yale
Everyone in the circle knew that Lucien Waldorf, president of the Waldorf Group, was ruthless and decisive in business. In his private life, he was famously indifferent, cold, and distant from women. No woman dared step within three meters of him.

Until that fateful gala, where he met Christina.

He fell for her at first sight and began pursuing her relentlessly.

He showered her with mansions, luxury cars, and jewelry. Fireworks lit up the sky for three nights straight as he declared his love. When she casually mentioned craving a chestnut cake that had been discontinued, he drove through a snowstorm late at night, crossing three cities to deliver the still-warm dessert to her.

But what truly made her accept him was the day her parents died in a car accident.

He was in another city at the time but had abandoned a billion-dollar deal to rush back. When he arrived, disheveled and bloodshot, he pulled her into his arms.

"Christina, don't cry. You still have me. I'll always be by your side."

Looking into his eyes, so full of love, her heart skipped a beat.

'He's the one for me.'

That's what she told herself.

But the man who had once loved her so wholeheartedly had succumbed to temptation three months ago. He had tangled himself with his best friend's sister, who had been staying in their home.

Traces of their affair stained the sofa, the kitchen, and their bed.

Lucien thought he had hidden it well, but he forgot—there were no secrets that can't escape the cracks.

The moment Christina learned the truth, she felt pain, despair, and disbelief. But in the end, she accepted the harsh reality and resolved to leave for good.

The Waldorf family had a military background spanning three generations, and none of them were allowed to leave the country—including Lucien.

If she went abroad, he would never be able to find her.

Clutching her immigration papers, Christina hailed a cab and headed for Sunset Bay.

The moment she stepped into the Waldorf family villa, a musky scent hit her nose.

Two people hanging decorations on the wall turned around at the sound of her entrance.

Lucien froze for a second before his gaze softened. He walked over and held Christina's hand.

"Baby, why are you dressed so lightly? Aren't you cold? Didn't you say you were meeting your friends? Why are you back so soon? I was preparing a surprise for you."

A surprise?

Christina looked up at him but couldn't help noticing the marks on his neck.

Hickeys.

Her eyelashes trembled as she fought to suppress the ache in her chest.

Before she could speak, Vanessa Bane giggled and walked over.

"Christina, Lucien really loves you. He's even throwing a grand celebration for your first meeting anniversary."

Vanessa paused deliberately before pointing at the mountain of gifts stacked on the sofa.

"Look, all of these are presents from him to you."

Christina's gaze followed Vanessa's hand but stopped at the wet stain under the pile of gifts.

In that moment, it felt like her world had collapsed.

The scent lingering in the air and the evidence before her eyes confirmed her worst suspicions.

Love her?

Lucien's so-called love meant preparing gifts for her while indulging in passion with Vanessa on that sofa—so wild that they had left the fabric soaked.

No pain could be sharper than this.

Lucien, oblivious to her turmoil, placed a necklace around her neck. His voice was tender as he said, "Happy anniversary, baby. I also prepared a candlelit dinner."

Christina's body trembled. She shook her head. "I'm not hungry. I… I don't feel well."

Every second spent with him now felt like torture.

She had told him from the start—she was a purist when it came to love. She couldn't accept flaws.

If he couldn't cherish her, then why did he come into her life at all?

Hearing her say she wasn't feeling well, Lucien panicked. He immediately called several private doctors to examine her. Even after they found nothing wrong, he sent his assistant to buy nutritional supplements and personally made her a cup of hot milk and coaxed her to sleep.

Four or five exhausting hours later, Christina finally drifted off.

In the middle of the night, thirst woke her up.

As she opened the bedroom door to get water, she froze.

The door to the guest room stood ajar. Moonlight spilled in, illuminating the two figures entwined on the bed.

"The necklace you gave her costs hundreds of millions, but no matter how long I begged, you wouldn't give it to me. Christina didn't even ask, and you gave it to her right away."

Even after their passion, Vanessa's legs were still wrapped around him, her voice dripping with jealousy.

Lucien frowned, pulled away, and lit a cigarette.

"Don't forget your place. I told you—I only love Christina. If you want to keep this relationship, it has to stay hidden. If she finds out, you know what'll happen."

Vanessa paled. She climbed out of bed and hugged him from behind.

"I know you love Christina, but I love you too. Can't I be a little jealous?"

Lucien didn't respond. Instead, he took a necklace identical to Christina's but in a different color out of the drawer.

"Don't act so pitiful. I bought one for you too, but you can only wear it in private. If she finds out, this ends immediately."

Vanessa's face lit up. She eagerly took the necklace and held it against her hickey-filled neck.

"Thank you, Lucien! I knew you cared about me. But are you really that afraid of Christina leaving you?"

He didn't hesitate.

"Yes. I can't live without her. If she leaves, I'll go insane."

Saying that, he pinned her down again. They resumed their affair. The bed creaked with their movements. Vanessa's satisfying sound echoed through the air.

Standing at the door, Christina's tears fell like rain.

She looked at the wedding photo hanging on the wall, her eyes locked on Lucien's face.

Lucien, in fifteen days, I'll be waiting to see you go mad.

Christina let out a quiet laugh. "So what if he loved me? He still betrayed me. Not only did he keep it from me, but all his friends covered for him too. Maybe you did as well."The incident at Christina's birthday party, where Vanessa fainted due to pregnancy, had caused a public uproar. Christina didn't believe Katie could have been unaware.Sure enough, Katie's expression stiffened. Ever since Lucien and Christina got married, she had urged them to have children. But one couldn't due to health reasons, and the other refused out of love for his wife. Katie had grown resentful, and seeing Christina always left her feeling uneasy. Naturally, her attitude had been far from kind. So when she learned that Vanessa was pregnant, she threw propriety aside and forgot how shameful infidelity was in their family.Even though Lucien's father gave her the cold shoulder daily for it, even though Christina suffered in silence, Katie didn't care. Nothing was more important than having a grand

Lucien stood frozen in place, his hand reaching out instinctively to grab Christina's arm.She brushed him off without hesitation, turning to help her friends take the drunken man to the hospital. But one of the friends gently stopped her."We planned this dinner to send you off," the friend said softly. "We never expected it to end like this. We already feel guilty enough—how can we trouble you further?"The friend gave her a light push toward the door. "Go home and pack your things."Christina hesitated but eventually nodded. Without another word, she turned and headed outside."Christina!"Lucien had been watching her the whole time. When he heard her friend mention packing, panic flashed across his face. He lunged forward and grabbed her hand."Christina, where are you going? Why are you packing?"His forehead was bandaged, but the wound beneath it still looked raw and ugly. Paired with the panic in his eyes, it made him look both pitiful and absurd.Christina didn't answe

Christina stood in silence for a long time before finally pulling his hands away and walking off."Christina!" His voice cracked as he stopped her, desperation seeping through. "Why won't you give me another chance?"From the moment he saw her again, Lucien had been trying to win her back. Yet, no matter what he said or did, she remained unmoved."You loved me so much before. Why can't you give me one more chance? If it's because the house still carries traces of Vanessa, I'll sell it. If the gifts I gave you in the past make you uncomfortable, I'll buy you new ones. If you think I'm dirty, I'll wash myself over and over again.""But what if it's your heart that's dirty?" Christina's voice cut through his ramblings. He couldn't answer. The words lodged somewhere in his throat, leaving him frozen in place. She gave him a faint smile, one that held no warmth, then turned and left without looking back. The next day, Christina began packing her things, preparing to return to Maelwar

The hatred in Vanessa's eyes was quickly swallowed by fear. During her days of forced rest in the Waldorf household, she had come to understand Lucien's methods all too well. Even with Katie posting guards around her day and night, his people still found ways to slip through the cracks, setting traps to endanger her. If not for her sheer luck, she might have died silently, without a trace.Feeling the trembling in the woman before him, Lucien's eyes darkened. If it hadn't been for Christina's distaste for cruelty, Vanessa wouldn't have made it this far. But now that the child in her womb was gone, she was nothing more than a burden.Disgusted, Lucien let go of her and wiped his hands casually with a handkerchief. "Get out of my sight. As far away as you can. If I ever see you again, you won't get off this easily."Leaving behind his chilling warning, he slammed the door shut. Vanessa shuddered instinctively, her fingers tightening around the thin hospital blanket.…On the other s

He spoke at length, his eyes fixed on her with desperate hope. As if, with just a nod, she could make everything disappear—Vanessa, the unborn child, all of it.Christina stared at the man before her, her gaze clouded with disappointment. After everything, this was what he had to say? He pinned the blame for his betrayal squarely on her. Because he couldn't bear to see her endure the pain of childbirth, he had turned to Vanessa. That was his excuse.Even now, he thought she had left him because of Vanessa. Her silence seemed to him like consent. The thought filled him with growing excitement, and he leaned in, as if he couldn't resist the urge to kiss her."Slap!"Before he could come any closer, her palm struck his face."Lucien, are you out of your mind?"Only then did Christina realize the truth. Lucien had never reflected on his role in their failed marriage. Instead, he believed that eliminating the obstacles would bring her back to him.But the biggest obstacle was himsel

In the dream, Lucien knelt on one knee.He held a wedding ring he had carved by hand, his gaze fixed tenderly on the girl in the white gown before him."Christina, will you marry me? I promise to love you, cherish you, and stay by your side for the rest of my life. I will never betray you."Finally, the girl moved. But when she lifted her face, it wasn't her. It was Vanessa.Yet Lucien didn't seem to notice. He looked at her with the same deep affection, as if nothing had changed.Just as Vanessa opened her mouth to speak, Christina woke up.She stared blankly at the window, unsettled by the strangeness of the dream.Knock, knock."Christina, are you awake?"Her aunt's voice came from outside the door. Christina patted her cheeks lightly and quickly replied, "I'm up, Auntie."Only then did her aunt push open the door and hand her an invitation, saying it had been sent by a friend.Christina suddenly recalled meeting an old friend shortly after returning to Anseer City.
