Chapter 16

Author: Dalley Winehouse
Connor stood in front of the urn with a solemn expression. After a moment, he turned to the guests and gave a deep bow.

"Thank you all for coming today to attend my wedding," he said. "The ceremony will proceed. Only—the bride is no longer Hannah. It's Samantha Jade."

"What does that mean? There's no bride!"

"Am I going blind? Can someone please tell me where the bride is?"

"It's the middle of the day. Is he trying the scare the living lights out of us? That little box in front of Connor... doesn't it look like an urn? God, I just felt a chill down my back. What the hell is going on?"

Connor slowly picked up the urn containing Samantha's ashes. Right there, in front of everyone, he pressed a kiss to it—gently, with an almost serene tenderness.

His lips curled into a faint smile.

"You're right," he said. "My wife is dead. This urn holds her ashes. I promised her I'd marry her. Even if she's no longer alive, I'm going to keep that promise. All right, officiant, we can begin the ce

But now, standing here again, remembering that fire, all that she'd been through—Samantha's chest ached so much it felt like she could barely breathe. She couldn't bring herself to believe a single word from Connor anymore."Let me go, please?" Her voice was spent. "Connor, I really don't love you anymore."Slowly, she crouched down and hugged her knees to her chest, letting her tears fall freely, soaking into the flowers at her feet."Samantha! But I still love you. I really do. I can't even begin to imagine what life would be like without you. Please, Samantha, just give me one more chance, okay?"He was about to say more when a sudden blow landed hard on the back of his head, and his body crumpled to the side, completely out of his control. It was Matt.Without a word, he pulled Samantha into his arms, holding her tight, eyes full of pain. Then he turned and stared coldly at Connor, his voice low and dangerous. "Looks like I was too soft before. I let you go, but it seems you

"Relax. Make yourself comfortable. It's just the two of us tonight—I booked the whole place.""Alright." Samantha forced a smile and said nothing more. Before the food could even arrive, everything fell apart. The fire alarm suddenly blared through the quiet restaurant, sharp and jarring.Trained staff, usually calm and composed, now moved in chaos."Fire! Run!" someone shouted.Panic broke loose as people scrambled toward the exit.Matt immediately grabbed Samantha's hand and pulled her with him. "Don't be scared, it's alright. I'm here."They made it outside and stood there for a few minutes. But from where they were, there wasn't the faintest sign of a fire inside the restaurant."What the hell is going on?" Matt demanded, turning to the manager."I—I don't know, Mr. Wilson. Please don't worry, I'll send someone in to check it right away.""Hurry up."He turned his head—and froze. He moved toward Hannah slowly, deliberately.A wave of dread crashed over her, sudden and paralyzing. Her instincts kicked in—she tried to stand, to run.But Matt stepped down hard on her, pinning her in place. Then he bent, grabbed her roughly by the front of her shirt, and yanked her to her feet. Without a word, he began dragging her toward the door."What are you doing? What—what do you want?!" she struggled, panic exploding in her mind like a fire alarm. She'd heard all the rumors about Matt—ruthless, cold-blooded, the kind of man people only spoke about in whispers. The "Living King of Hell," they called him.But what she hadn't expected was how much he cared for Samantha. That terrified her even more. Because now, she wasn't sure if she'd make it out alive. Before leaving, Matt turned back. His voice was soft, impossibly gentle—completely at odds with what had just happened."I'll pick you up after work. Let's go home. I'll cook tonight."Samantha's teeth were still chatt

"You're delusional," Samantha said, her voice trembling despite her effort to stay calm. "Even if I die, he won't love you. Haven't you figured out what kind of person Connor is? He's never loved anyone—not once. From beginning to end, the only person he's ever cared about is himself."Hannah faltered, just slightly. The knife in her hand didn't waver, but her grip loosened, her eyes flickering.Sensing the shift, Samantha pressed on. "And I wasn't the one who ruined you. It was Connor. After everything he's done to you, you still want to marry him? Do you really want to spend the rest of your life being tortured by that man?""No, no!" Hannah shook her head violently, her bloodshot eyes fixed on Samantha. "You're lying! You're just trying to drive a wedge between me and Connor. Don't think I don't see through you!"Samantha fell silent. There was no reasoning with her. This woman was lost.By now, Hannah had stepped in close, the blade of her knife pressing against Samantha's nec
