Chapter 4

Perfect Timing
Carter’s anger only intensified. “What do you mean he gave me everything? Everything I have, I earned myself! Your father should have died years ago. If anything, this happened far too late!”

When this house was built, the finest materials were used for safety reasons. Those same materials had become my prison.

I grabbed every tool I could find and smashed them against the windows. The glass did not even crack.

So, I jumped from the bathroom exhaust window on the second floor.

The ornamental shrubs below cut up both my legs. Blood poured from the wounds.

I ignored the pain and immediately called our family’s private jet service. They told me that one day earlier, Carter had already taken the jet on vacation with his secretary.

I checked the nearest commercial flights—no tickets, nothing.

My father was the only thing keeping me going.

I collapsed on the ground and wept. Years of heartbreak, humiliation, and helplessness came crashing down all at once.

An unfamiliar number appeared on my phone. “Nancy, I am coming to get you.”

It was only when I boarded Wyatt Levy’s private jet that I realized just how badly my legs were wounded.

He bandaged me with a pained look on his face. “Carter is an absolute scumbag. When we return, I’ll make sure he pays for what he has done.”

I let out a sigh. “To be fair, he was nice for many years.”

The expression on Wyatt’s face made it look like he had just swallowed something rotten.

“Well then, I’ll give him a quick death when we come back.”

When we arrived at the hospital, I ran toward my father’s room without a second thought. What greeted me was only an empty bed and the flat lines running across the monitor.

I threw myself onto the bed and wailed, “Dad, how could you leave me? I’ve been through so much. I was waiting for you to wake up and get even for me.”

Wyatt stepped forward and tried to help me to my feet, but I felt as though all my will had been drained away.

“Nancy, it’s okay. You still have me. I can help you. I can help you take back everything.”

I wiped away my tears. There was no time for grief. Even if I was going down, I was going to drag every last one of them down with me. “We’re going back now. Tomorrow is the shareholders’ meeting. We’re going to expose Carter for what he really is.”

Yes. I still had the trump card my father had left me.

I would never surrender.

After returning home, I went straight to the law firm and retrieved the document my father had left behind.

Fortunately, there was still time.

I walked into the conference hall. Everyone looked at me with strange, mocking eyes.

Carter showed no fear. The word “confidence” might as well have been written across his face. At this point, even if I exposed everything he had done, most of the people sitting at that table would still vote for him if it protected their interests.

Beside him, Nikki leaned over and whispered something into his ear. She made her voice loud enough to hear. “So, she’s your wife. When I saw her last time, I thought she was your mother.”

Laughter rippled through the room.

Ben was the first to strike. “Nancy, I let you off the hook last time. What are you doing here again today?”

I raised the document in my hand. “Ben, Carter may have a share transfer agreement, but I have one too. As long as I don’t approve the transfer, the document he’s relying on is worthless.”

I had expected Ben’s attitude to change, but he did not even look at the document. He simply called for security. “Drag her out of here.”

Then, an aged voice came from outside the door. “Ben, is this how you treat my daughter when I’m not around?”

As I watched the police car carrying Carter away, I pulled my hand free from Wyatt’s.Wyatt looked confused. “Nancy, I know that you still have feelings for him. After all, you’ve been married for years. But that’s okay. From now on, I’ll be here for you.”I smiled. “Be here for me? What about your wife then?”Wyatt instantly tensed. “What are you talking about? You haven’t married me yet. How could I have a wife?”I pulled out my phone. The smiling couple on the screen was impossible to ignore.Wyatt took a step toward me, but I had moved away. “Nancy, I can explain. She and I don’t love each other anymore. Just two more days and the divorce will be finalized. Just wait for me a little longer.”Wyatt saw the look on my face, the look of someone who had known all along. Understanding dawned on him. He said with disbelief, “You knew all along. You were using me to deal with Carter. Now that he is gone, I have no more use to you, is that it?” The last few words came out as a shout

Back at the family estate, I turned to my father.“Dad, what is that about?” One look at his ashen face told me how furious he was.“Ever since I began to suspect that that jerk wanted to swallow our family’s enterprise, I started investigating. Now, I have finally uncovered the truth.”We had that receptionist, Nikki, to thank for it.She was still young. It did not take much pressure before she started talking.“While Mr. Carter and I were on vacation, he told me that rich people make the dumbest decisions. Instead of trusting their own daughters with their fortunes, they’d rather give them to outsiders. So, he decided to help things along. He paid off Mr. Mark’s nutritionist, and after that... Mr. Mark... Mr. Carter said that we were the same kind of people—that we came from the bottom and have spent our lives struggling.”For more than ten years, he had enjoyed every luxury imaginable. What exactly had he been struggling through?Wyatt walked into the room with a grim expres

I trembled with fury. Every word of it was a complete fabrication.Back then, Carter had told me that he did not think I would get along with his family, so it would be best if I never met them. Feeling bad about it, I had suggested sending his mother five thousand dollars a month for living expenses.Carter had hugged me with tears in his eyes and told me I was different from everyone else. The comment section was already flooded with rage. As I had expected, the very next day, Carter came to the front gate of our family estate. It was just like ten years ago. When he saw me come out, Carter shuffled forward until he reached me. “Nancy, we’ve been married for ten years. We had a good life together. We shared so many wonderful memories. Do those years really mean nothing to you?”“Carter, I had no idea you suffered so much all these years. How difficult it must have been to put up with an old, unattractive wife like me, to run every aspect of Freeman Group, and to enjoy everything my family gave you. Carter, you married into my family. What exactly gives you the right to stand here asking for forgiveness?”Perhaps the phrase “married into my family” struck a nerve. He lunged over.“Nancy, your vicious nature has not changed at all. Who cares if I came from a poor family? That doesn’t give you and your father the right to look down on me. For all these years, you called me your husband, but what was I really? A servan

To be fair, he really had treated me well over the past ten years. For ten years, he had never once raised his voice at me.Whether it was the company or our home, he handled everything flawlessly, big or small. For ten years, there had never been another woman around him. That was why the appearance of that iced coffee had felt so sudden and out of place. If he had been a little more patient, the company really might have been his today. What a pity. In the face of his true intentions, everything else had become a joke.I stared at him coldly, as though seeing him for the very first time.“Carter, do you have the guts to repeat what you said that day in front of Dad?”Cold sweat broke out across Carter’s forehead. “Nancy, I was only joking. Isn’t it completely normal for a married couple to argue now and then?”I walked over to him and lowered my voice. “No, it isn’t. No one uploads videos of their wife online.”Carter’s eyes widened. “You heard that?”Not only did I hear i

The familiar voice made me turn around at once. The moment I saw who it was, tears instantly welled up in my eyes. After ten long years, my father had finally woken up. “Dad!” I cried out and ran straight to him. This whole situation felt unreal. I truly felt as though I were dreaming.I held my father’s hand, feeling its warmth. “Dad, you’re not dead. That’s wonderful.”My father patted my head. “It’s okay, Nancy. Let me deal with that jerk for you!”My father stepped forward. Carter’s legs had already turned to jelly. He put on a fawning voice. “Mark, how wonderful. You’ve finally woken up. You have no idea how much Nancy and I have prayed for your recovery all these years.”“Did you pray for my recovery, or did you pray for my death?”Carter’s expression grew strained. “For your recovery, of course.”Wyatt stepped forward and struck Carter across the face.Carter flew into a rage. “Who do you think you are? How dare you hit me?!”When he looked at the contempt in our
