Chapter 2

Penulis: Tranquil Phoenix
As Julia walked downstairs, she saw Lawrence lounging in the garden under the sun. There was a rare smile playing at the corner of his mouth.

"Where's my breakfast?" she asked as she approached him.

The moment Lawrence heard her voice, his smile vanished. "I didn't make it."

"Why not? You know I always want your breakfast in the morning." Julia frowned. She could sense something was off about Lawrence today.

"I'm heading out to meet a client and don't have time. You can ask the maid to make it."

Lawrence turned to leave, but Julia grabbed his arm.

"What's wrong?" Noticing his odd behavior, she softened her tone.

"Is it because I'm getting engaged? That's what my family wants, and I haven't agreed to it yet."

"You misunderstood, Ms. Ware. Who you marry is your choice. No matter what, you told me from the start that our relationship is purely physical with no emotional strings attached."

He shrugged off her hand and walked away without looking back.

When Lawrence returned to the office, he noticed a gift box on his desk.

One of his colleagues, Elliot Wyatt, walked by and teased, "Mr. Hale, another admirer sending you a gift?"

Lawrence opened it nonchalantly. Inside was a limited-edition tie—the third one exactly like the others he had received.

He knew exactly who it was from. The gift was typical of Julia. After every intimate encounter, a new tie would appear on his desk.

He once mentioned liking ties, so every gift Julia gave him was a tie.

She would give him different colors of the same style, various versions from the same collection, or even the exact same tie over and over again.

At first, Lawrence had loved them, even though he knew she hadn't put any thought into them. But now, he wasn't interested anymore.

"Do you want it? You can have it."

He handed the tie to Elliot, who excitedly put it on around his neck. "Really? This is a limited-edition tie, Mr. Hale! You're so generous!"

Elliot proudly walked around showing off the tie. Just then, Julia stepped off the elevator.

Seeing him give away the gift she had given him made her furious.

She pulled Lawrence into her office. "What's going on with you, Lawrence? I told you from the start that I won't be marrying you."

"I know," Lawrence responded quietly. "I know very well, Ms. Ware."

"Then what are you trying to do?"

"Nothing. I already have three of the exact same tie. I'm tired of them. I don't want another one."

Julia was taken aback. Had she really given him three identical ties?

They were all the latest designs, limited editions, and expensive. She had bought them casually, thinking he'd love them.

"I'll buy you something else next time."

"No need. There won't be a next time." Lawrence glanced at his watch. "Ms. Ware, it's 9:00 am. You should be in your meeting."

As he walked away, Julia stood there, lost in thought.

Later, when Lawrence was preparing some materials for Julia's meeting, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his stomach.

In the past, he would have pushed through it.

But this time, he called a hospital and made an appointment without hesitation. He was going to take the day off and see a doctor.

Julia wasn't paying attention during the meeting. Her thoughts were consumed with Lawrence. Her dark eyes were fixed on him, but through the entire meeting, he didn't even spare her a glance.

When lunchtime came, Julia went to look for him, but he was nowhere to be found.

"Where's Lawrence?" she asked.

"Didn't Mr. Hale tell you? He's on leave this afternoon."

"Where did he go?"

On leave? He'd never taken a sick day before. Even when he was burning with fever and close to fainting, he never took time off.

Why would he suddenly take a day off without telling her?

"I don't know."

"Find out. I want to know where he went," Julia ordered.

At the hospital, the doctor told Lawrence that his stomach issues were caused by not eating properly for too long.

Indeed, these years of working for Julia had made him forget what it felt like to sit down and enjoy a proper meal.

After the appointment, Lawrence didn't rush back to the office. Instead, he found a quiet spot to sit and relax.

The afternoon sun was warm. Sitting by the window, he sipped his coffee leisurely.

It had been a long time since he had the chance to sit and enjoy the moment.

These past years working for Julia had drained him completely. It was time for him to start living for himself.

Just then, his phone vibrated. He looked down and saw a call from Julia. He glanced at it and didn't answer.

Julia, growing anxious, called him again and again.

Lawrence grew irritated and turned off his phone.

"Are you saying we've met before?" Lawrence asked.Megan replied, "I saw you at the Graduation Ceremony for Outstanding Graduates. My speech script got lost, and you helped me find it."Lawrence looked at the woman in front of him. His mind drifted back to his college days.Back then, as the representative of outstanding graduates, he had to give a speech. While rehearsing backstage, he had indeed met a young lady who was also preparing for her speech. Her script had gone missing, and Lawrence had helped her search for it. He had eventually found it in a corner. But at that time, he had been too nervous to remember what she looked like. So, it was Megan?"You were that girl?""Do you remember now?" Megan smiled. "Unfortunately, we had already graduated by then. I couldn't find any information about you after that. It wasn't until years later that I saw you again at a cocktail party. Only then did I know that you had become Julia's assistant.""I see." Lawrence pressed his lips

"What did he do?" Lawrence sneered. Even now, Julia still didn't know what kind of person Patrick was."Julia, I told you before. I didn't hire the thugs from that day. It was Patrick. He staged the whole thing himself, but you were too blind to see through it!"Julia's mind went blank. She turned to Patrick and looked at him in disbelief."Is that true, Patrick? Did you really hire those people? Are you out of your mind?""Yes! I'm out of my mind!" At this point, Patrick didn't bother to pretend anymore. He shouted in despair, "I hired people to abduct you, and I framed him! Because he took you from me! I won't let anyone take you away from me! Jules, you promised you'd be with me and you'd marry me! But now, you're all over him! I just wish those thugs had finished the job and killed him that day!""You're crazy! You're really crazy!" Julia shook her head. Her eyes were filled with anger and sadness."Yes, I'm crazy! But you're not much better! It was you who paid those people

Seeing Julia, Lawrence frowned. He should've waited for her to leave before coming out.Julia stepped right in front of him with a smile. "Lawrence, you and Megan are in a fake marriage, aren't you? It's not real, right?"Lawrence's pupils shrank sharply. How could Julia possibly know about his and Megan's arrangement? This was something only the two of them knew, and maybe the assistant who handled the paperwork for Megan."I don't know what you're talking about."He panicked and took a step to leave, but Julia rushed into his arms, saying excitedly, "I knew it. I know you still love me. I know you and Megan aren't really married. Don't go, Lawrence. Don't leave me. I miss you so much."Fueled by the alcohol, she tilted her head to kiss him, but Lawrence pushed her away. "Get a grip, Julia! Do you even know what you're doing?""I know! You're just throwing a tantrum, trying to use Megan to provoke me, so you're faking a marriage!"Julia tried to hug him again, but Megan arrive

As soon as Lawrence stepped into the room, he saw Julia and Patrick. He hadn't expected them to be here, so it left him feeling a little uneasy.Noticing his discomfort, Megan squeezed his hand. She then confidently introduced him, "Let me introduce everyone. This is my husband, Lawrence Hale."After Megan finished, the group erupted in teasing remarks."You've never brought a man to this kind of event before!""Yeah, who would've thought the first time would be with your husband?"Someone stood up and handed a glass of wine to Lawrence. "Let me toast to you, Lawrence. Congratulations!"Lawrence hesitated for a moment, unsure whether to accept, but Megan quickly took the glass and drank it down in one go."Lawrence can't drink, so don't tease him. I'll drink for him."Seeing Megan protectively stand up for him, Lawrence couldn't help but smile. It used to be him drinking for Julia, but now, for the first time, a woman was drinking for him."Oh, Ms. Smith is already protecting

Wedding rings?Megan was stunned. Lawrence was buying her a wedding ring? But weren't they in a contractual marriage?"Which one do you like?" Lawrence turned to ask for her opinion.Megan pointed to one casually. "How about this one?" She knew Lawrence didn't have much money, so she picked a smaller one.Seeing her thoughtful choice, Lawrence was touched. "We'll take this one."Lawrence pulled out his card and paid."Would you like it packaged?" the staff member asked."It's fine." Megan picked up one of the rings and slipped it onto Lawrence's ring finger. Then she picked up the woman's ring and handed it to him."Put this on for me." Megan bit her lip. Her heart was racing. "Lawrence, we—"Before she could finish, Lawrence interrupted, "Even if it's a contractual marriage, we should still have rings. Otherwise, it'll be easy to get exposed."Megan's heart sank at his words. So, it was just to avoid suspicion. She felt a little disappointed. After putting the ring on his f

Lawrence tightly held Megan's hand, their fingers intertwined.Julia looked at him in disbelief. They had been together for seven years! And now, he had left her and married another woman?"You're lying to me just because I slapped you? You think I can't find out whether you're really married or not?""You don't believe me?"Lawrence nodded, signaling for Megan to take out her phone. After they had registered their marriage that day, Megan had taken a selfie of them with their marriage certificate.Lawrence had avoided making things public before, but since Julia had nearly gone mad, he had no choice but to show her the marriage certificate to make her face the truth."Take a look. What do you think this is?" Lawrence held up the phone and zoomed in on the photo. The two of them looked perfect together."It's fake." Julia didn't believe it. She shook her head with a forced laugh. "Lawrence, you can't marry someone else! You loved me for seven years. How could you marry someone
