Chapter 3

Author: Tranquil Phoenix
When Julia discovered that Lawrence had turned off his phone, she was so furious that she nearly smashed it.

He had spent the entire afternoon at a café. For the first time, he felt like time truly belonged to him.

It wasn't until dark that he turned his phone back on. Dozens of missed calls and countless messages flooded in.

"Where are you?

"I'm waiting for you at your place. Come back now.

"Lawrence, I'm giving you half an hour. Come back now."

The last message was sent at 3:00 pm, and now it was 6:00 pm.

Looking at her messages, Lawrence sneered. Just by reading these, he could imagine how angry Julia must be at that moment.

He wandered around, ate some of his favorite foods, and then returned home leisurely.

The apartment was pitch dark when he walked in. He bent down to change his shoes. As he flicked on the lights, he saw Julia sitting on the couch.

Seeing him come back so late, Julia was seething. "Where have you been? Do you have any idea how long I've been waiting for you?"

Lawrence ignored her. He walked over to the kitchen island and poured himself a glass of water.

In the past, he would have been the one waiting there.

Whenever Julia said she would visit him, he'd sit on the couch waiting, no matter how late it was.

If she said she would arrive at 10:00 pm, he would be anticipating it from 6:00 pm.

If she said she would come the next day, he would prepare everything perfectly.

Since Julia mentioned liking the smell of sun, Lawrence would change the bed sheets. The duvet would be aired out before he put a fresh cover on it and made the bed.

But now, he was tired. He wouldn't wait for her anymore.

"I'm talking to you, Lawrence. Can't you hear me?" She grabbed his hand. Her dark eyes were filled with fury.

Lawrence remained calm. "I had things to do. If you didn't want to wait, you could have left."

"What's going on with you? You've been acting strange all day."

"I'm fine."

Lawrence moved around her and started heading upstairs.

At this moment, Julia's suppressed anger finally boiled over. "Lawrence Hale, remember your place. No one has ever made me wait this long. Don't forget. You're just my—"

"Your what?" he interrupted her. "Fling?"

Julia froze. "You heard what I said that night?" She finally realized why he had changed. "I was just saying it for fun. I didn't mean it."

"Then tell me. What am I to you?" Lawrence looked up at her. His sharp gaze locked with hers.

Julia fell silent, not knowing what to say.

"I'm tired. You should go now."

For the first time, he dismissed her. He went to his room, took a warm shower, changed, and prepared to sleep.

Downstairs, Julia leaned against her car and stared up at the apartment for a long time.

Lawrence ignored her. He pulled the curtains shut, turned off the lights, and quickly fell asleep.

The next morning, before he was even fully awake, his phone started ringing.

"Lawrence, turn on the news! Julia just publicly broke off her engagement! Is it because of you?"

Lawrence jumped out of bed and turned on the TV.

Sure enough, he saw Julia telling reporters that she was canceling her engagement because there was someone more important to her now.

His heart skipped a beat. Seeing the determined look in Julia's eyes, Lawrence felt a rush of excitement.

"Congratulations, Lawrence! Looks like you finally won Julia's heart."

After hanging up, Lawrence was still filled with emotions.

He wanted to call Julia and ask what she really meant by those words. Was she truly canceling her engagement for him?

But before he could dial her number, he received a message from Julia. "Come to Moore Hotel at 8:00 pm. There's a party. Dress well."

After reading her message, Lawrence finally smiled.

She rarely invited him to parties. In the past, she almost never took him anywhere. But now, she was inviting him to a party.

He quickly texted his friend, David Gardner, who responded excitedly, "Is Julia ready to go public with you? It looks like you've finally got your chance."

Lawrence bit his lip. A sense of anticipation crept into his chest.

In his mind, he quietly repeated that this would be the last time—the final chance he would give to both Julia and himself.

He went to a mall, bought an expensive suit, and then went to a stylist and makeup artist to get himself ready.

At precisely 8:00 pm, he arrived at Moore Hotel.

He had heard a little about the event. It was an auction for the high society, full of influential people.

Standing outside the entrance, Lawrence took a deep breath. He subconsciously reached into his suit pants pocket to feel the small box before stepping inside the ballroom.

The grand hall was filled with people, everyone dressed to impress.

Amidst the sea of beauty and glamour, Lawrence immediately spotted the woman he had been thinking about.

He began walking toward her but overheard someone say, "I didn't expect Ms. Ware to bring a partner tonight."

"I heard it's her beloved man who finally came back from being abroad."

"No wonder she held a press conference this morning to break off her engagement to Mr. Horne. Turns out, her first love has returned."

Lawrence's smile froze. First love? What were they talking about?

"Are you saying we've met before?" Lawrence asked.Megan replied, "I saw you at the Graduation Ceremony for Outstanding Graduates. His mind drifted back to his college days.Back then, as the representative of outstanding graduates, he had to give a speech. While rehearsing backstage, he had indeed met a young lady who was also preparing for her speech. Her script had gone missing, and Lawrence had helped her search for it. He had eventually found it in a corner. But at that time, he had been too nervous to remember what she looked like. So, it was Megan?"You were that girl?""Do you remember now?" Megan smiled. "Unfortunately, we had already graduated by then. I couldn't find any information about you after that. It wasn't until years later that I saw you again at a cocktail party. Only then did I know that you had become Julia's assistant.""I see." Lawrence pressed his lips

"What did he do?" Lawrence sneered. Even now, Julia still didn't know what kind of person Patrick was."Julia, I told you before. I didn't hire the thugs from that day. It was Patrick. He staged the whole thing himself, but you were too blind to see through it!"Julia's mind went blank. She turned to Patrick and looked at him in disbelief."Is that true, Patrick? Did you really hire those people? Are you out of your mind?""Yes! I'm out of my mind!" At this point, Patrick didn't bother to pretend anymore. He shouted in despair, "I hired people to abduct you, and I framed him! Because he took you from me! I won't let anyone take you away from me! Jules, you promised you'd be with me and you'd marry me! But now, you're all over him! I just wish those thugs had finished the job and killed him that day!""You're crazy! You're really crazy!" Seeing Julia, Lawrence frowned. He should've waited for her to leave before coming out.Julia stepped right in front of him with a smile. "Lawrence, you and Megan are in a fake marriage, aren't you? It's not real, right?"Lawrence's pupils shrank sharply. How could Julia possibly know about his and Megan's arrangement? This was something only the two of them knew, and maybe the assistant who handled the paperwork for Megan."I don't know what you're talking about."He panicked and took a step to leave, but Julia rushed into his arms, saying excitedly, "I knew it. I know you still love me. I know you and Megan aren't really married. Don't go, Lawrence. Don't leave me. I miss you so much."Fueled by the alcohol, she tilted her head to kiss him, but Lawrence pushed her away. "Get a grip, Julia! Do you even know what you're doing?""I know! You're just throwing a tantrum, trying to use Megan to provoke me, so you're faking a marriage!"Julia tried to hug him again, but Megan arrive

As soon as Lawrence stepped into the room, he saw Julia and Patrick. He hadn't expected them to be here, so it left him feeling a little uneasy.Noticing his discomfort, Megan squeezed his hand. She then confidently introduced him, "Let me introduce everyone. This is my husband, Lawrence Hale."After Megan finished, the group erupted in teasing remarks."You've never brought a man to this kind of event before!""Yeah, who would've thought the first time would be with your husband?"Someone stood up and handed a glass of wine to Lawrence. "Let me toast to you, Lawrence. Congratulations!"Lawrence hesitated for a moment, unsure whether to accept, but Megan quickly took the glass and drank it down in one go."Lawrence can't drink, so don't tease him. I'll drink for him."Seeing Megan protectively stand up for him, Lawrence couldn't help but smile. It used to be him drinking for Julia, but now, for the first time, a woman was drinking for him."Oh, Ms. Smith is already protecting

Wedding rings?Megan was stunned. Lawrence was buying her a wedding ring? But weren't they in a contractual marriage?"Which one do you like?" Lawrence turned to ask for her opinion.Megan pointed to one casually. "How about this one?" She knew Lawrence didn't have much money, so she picked a smaller one.Seeing her thoughtful choice, Lawrence was touched. "We'll take this one."Lawrence pulled out his card and paid."Would you like it packaged?" the staff member asked."It's fine." Megan picked up one of the rings and slipped it onto Lawrence's ring finger. Then she picked up the woman's ring and handed it to him."Put this on for me." Megan bit her lip. Her heart was racing. "Lawrence, we—"Before she could finish, Lawrence interrupted, "Even if it's a contractual marriage, we should still have rings. Otherwise, it'll be easy to get exposed."Megan's heart sank at his words. So, it was just to avoid suspicion. She felt a little disappointed. After putting the ring on his f

What do you think this is?" Lawrence held up the phone and zoomed in on the photo. The two of them looked perfect together."It's fake." Julia didn't believe it. She shook her head with a forced laugh. "Lawrence, you can't marry someone else! You loved me for seven years. How could you marry someone
