Chapter 2

Author: Leaves Fall
I looked at Lindsay.

She really thought this was a form of comfort.

Later, my lawyer, Alexa Hanks, sent over the divorce papers.

When I tapped to confirm, Lindsay had her back to me while on a call with her assistant. "Keep the police report under wraps. We can't let it ruin Liam's homecoming party. And send Myles another watch he likes. He'll get over it in a few days."

I closed the page and forwarded the file to the printing shop.

This time, I was not going to wait for her to come and coax me.

…

On the day of my discharge, Lindsay did not come to pick me up.

The driver handed me a watch box. "Ms. Zane said you'll stop being angry if you see this."

Inside the box was a limited-edition wristwatch, expensive enough to buy the small mountain cabin my father left, but it was not my Seven-Star Watch.

I closed the box. "Send it back."

The driver looked troubled. "Ms. Zane also said you must attend Mr. Stewart's homecoming party tonight. The police incident has gone public, and people are accusing Mr. Stewart of being a homewrecker. You need to go and clear things up."

"Clear what up?"

"Say that you only got out of the car that night out of spite and that it had nothing to do with Mr. Stewart."

It turned out that the watch she had given me was not an apology gift; it was to buy my silence.

The banquet was held at Stargaze Manor, a property owned by the Zane family.

My father had once run a small, six-room inn there. After he passed away, I merged the inn into the Zane family's estate but kept the wooden cabin in the backyard. Lindsay said it was a place I could always return to.

The party was already underway when I arrived.

Liam stood in the center of the crowd, wearing a dark gray suit. The strap of my Seven-Star Watch rested against his cuff. The clasp had been replaced, yet the central star bore a visible scratch.

Lindsay stood beside him. Seeing me enter, her gaze immediately fell on my thin coat. "Didn't the doctor tell you to keep warm?"

She unwound her scarf and held it out to me.

Just then, Liam sneezed.

Lindsay's hand paused in mid-air before she wrapped the scarf around his neck. "It's cold in the mountains. Why didn't you dress warmer?"

Liam pulled his scarf tighter and looked at me apologetically. "Myles, I'm sorry. Lindsay was just acting out of habit. Please don't mind it."

People around us laughed, trying to smooth things over.

"Looking after Liam has become second nature to Ms. Zane."

"If it hadn't been for that incident back then, they might have gotten together long ago."

Lindsay's tone was detached. "That's in the past. Don't go making up stories."

She did not deny that last remark.

The host soon invited me onto the stage.

As the microphone was handed to me, Lindsay stood below, giving me a slight nod.

It was her signature style. No orders were needed; a single glance was all it took for me to know I was expected to handle everything perfectly for her.

I gripped the microphone. "Regarding the police report from that snowy night..."

Liam nervously clutched Lindsay's sleeve.

Lindsay patted his hand reassuringly. "Don't worry, he knows where to draw the line."

Watching that gesture, I continued, "The police will handle the matter based on the facts. Surveillance footage and interrogation records clearly show who abandoned me on that closed-off road and who took my personal belongings."

The venue fell silent instantly.

Lindsay's expression darkened. "Myles."

I lowered the microphone. "Also, that watch was never a gift meant for you. Please return it to me now, Mr. Stewart."

Liam's eyes quickly reddened. "Lindsay said I could wear it until the party ended. I didn't realize you minded so much."

"It's over now." I held out my hand.

He did not move.

Lindsay stepped in front of him, lowering her voice. "The guests are watching. Do you really have to embarrass him in public?"

"I was the one left out in the snow."

"I've already apologized and offered compensation."

"So I'm supposed to lie for you?"

She gripped my wrist—not hard, but enough to stop me from moving forward. "You haven't fully recovered. Go upstairs and rest. You can have the watch tomorrow."

"I want to go back to my own cabin."

Lindsay paused for a moment. "You can't stay in the backyard cabin."

"Why not?"

Liam explained quietly, "Lindsay is turning it into an art studio for me. The workmen just moved in today, so it might be a bit messy."

There were only two keys to the cabin my father left behind.

I held one and gave the other to Lindsay on our wedding day.

I looked at her. "You agreed to it?"

"Liam needs a quiet place to start over. The cabin has been empty for three years, and you rarely come back."

"That's because you said the mountain road was dangerous and you wouldn't let me come alone."

She let go of my wrist, then said in a calm, matter-of-fact tone, "Since you're not using it, we shouldn't let it go to waste."

A string of newly hung lights illuminated the backyard. Beneath the lights, workers were taking down the wooden sign my father had nailed to the door with his own hands.

For the past year, Lindsay had been sending Alexa a letter every month. She did not urge me to reply, nor did she say anything about me going home. Most of the letters were just about trivial things. She talked about throwing away the breakfast containers at home, the light in the foyer breaking, and going to Starley's grave and finally telling her everything that had happened over the years. The last letter contained only one sentence: [I know now that you weren't having a tantrum that night.]I placed the hot tea by the window and walked to the gate. Lindsay had lost a lot of weight, and snow was stuck on her dark coat. She saw me and instinctively clenched her fingers before quickly relaxing. "I'm here to deliver the keys."She handed me the last spare key from the old Stargaze Manor. "No one can enter your wooden cabin anymore.""Thank you." I took the key.She looked at the wooden sign on the door. "Have you gotten used to living here?""Yes.""How cold is it at night?"

"No."Liam's eyes were red. "She clearly loves you. She just didn't know how to treat you well before." I looked at him. "When someone is drowning, it's pointless for those on the shore to debate whether they love that person or not."Lindsay came from the end of the corridor. Liam immediately grabbed her sleeve. "Lindsay, my sister's death anniversary is approaching. You promised to accompany me to see the snow on the mountains." She looked down at his hand for a moment. Every time he mentioned Starley, she would give in. This time, she slowly withdrew her sleeve. "I'll visit her grave, but I won't accompany you anymore." "Why?" "It's because what I owe is to her, not you." Liam's face turned ghastly pale. He still wanted to speak, but the staff had informed him to go for questioning. Lindsay walked up to me and handed over the signed divorce papers. "The authorization of the cabin has been revoked. The manor will no longer touch it." "Okay." "The fragments of

Liam finally admitted that he had deliberately broken the watch. "I just wanted to give it a try. It was Myles' watch. I wanted to know if you'd be so cruel as to blame me?"He sat by the hospital bed, his voice trembling as he continued, "And you didn't."Lindsay held the fragment in her hand, and the tip of her palm was scratched by the sharp edge. "What about his message for help?""I deleted it.""Why?""Because you would go back as soon as you saw it."Liam suddenly smiled. "Lindsay, why are you pretending to regret it now? It was you who made him get out of the car. He was frozen for four hours, but you were at the fireplace helping me with the watch. Even without me, you never put him first."The color gradually drained from Lindsay's face. She did not defend herself.Liam threw the phone onto the bed. "My sister saved you. You promised to take care of me.""I took care of you for seven years.""What about him?""You're not indebted to him, are you?"Liam's remark ma

On the day of the divorce mediation, Lindsay was 20 minutes late. She saw me in the corridor, and her pace quickened noticeably. "Why did you change your number?""My old number was on our family plan. I deactivated it.""You could've transferred it to your own name.""That wasn't necessary."She seemed to have something else to say, but Alexa had already pushed open the mediation room door. The mediator asked both of us what we wanted.I said, "Divorce."Lindsay said, "I disagree."Her voice faded away, and for the first time, I looked seriously at her. "Why?""We haven't reached the point where we need to divorce."“Abandoning me on a freezing night, taking my father's belongings, unlawfully occupying property I owned before marriage, forging authorization documents. Which one of those isn't enough?”"I'll handle these matters." Lindsay slid a document across the table. The authorization to use the cabin had been voluntarily revoked, and the manor was assuming full liabil

When Lindsay arrived at my apartment in the city, it was already dark. She stood outside the door, holding the box containing the Seven-Star Watch in her hand.I only opened the door a crack. "If there's anything you want, contact Alexa.""Here's your watch."I reached out to take it, but she did not let go immediately. "Let me in and talk.""That's not necessary.""Myles, I've asked the manor to suspend the art exhibition, and the wooden cabin will be restored to its original state.""That's what you ought to do.""Liam was surrounded by reporters today and had a seizure and was sent to the hospital. Are you satisfied now?"I looked up at her. "Did you come to return the watch or to put me on trial for his sake?"Lindsay's throat moved slightly. "I didn't mean it like that.""You never did."The watch fell into my palm, the missing cornered star-shaped rivets poking against my skin."Did you notice it was broken?""I did.""What did you say back then?"Lindsay did not a

The manor gate closed behind me.Alexa opened the car door for me. "All the luggage has been moved out of the Zane family's estate. Should we go to the apartment in the city or directly to your aunt's house?""The apartment.""What about the cabin?""I'll reclaim it tomorrow morning."The car left the mountain road, and I never looked back.An hour later, Lindsay finished the opening reception. She returned to the lounge and saw the divorce papers on the table. Her expression did not change much.Liam followed her. "Myles really left? Should we send a driver to go after him?""No." Lindsay turned to the last page of the agreement. My name was already signed. She let her fingers linger on the date for a while before closing the document. "He goes to a hotel for two days every time he's upset. He'll come back when he's had time to think things through.""But he left the wedding ring there.""He also took it off when we argued last year."She spoke firmly but took the ring ou
