Chapter 3

Author: Leaves Fall
When I arrived at the cabin, my father's wooden sign had already split in two.

The foreman recognized me and hurriedly explained, "Ms. Zane said to clear all the old things. We didn't know it was yours."

I crouched down to pick it up. The wooden thorns pierced into the palm of my hand, oozing tiny drops of blood.

When my father handed the inn over to me, he had written a sentence on the back of the sign: [Come and stay for one night when you're tired, Myles.]

The handwriting had been washed away by the rain, but I still recognized each stroke.

Liam followed and stood outside the door without entering. "Myles, don't blame Lindsay. It was I who wanted a place to paint snow scenes. She thought this place was suitable and had someone tidy it up."

"Get out."

"I can move elsewhere," he suggested while sweeping his gaze over the newly replaced easels and carpets in the room. "It's just that Lindsay had paid a year's renovation fee in advance for me. The money will go to waste if we stop now."

Lindsay walked in. "How's your hand?"

I pulled away from her touch. "Call off the crew."

"Myles, don't take your anger out on the house."

"It's not just a house. It's the home my father left me."

Lindsay glanced at the broken wooden sign and instructed the foreman, "Make a new one."

"What about the original lettering?"

"Carve it the same way."

"It won't be his handwriting."

Her patience ran out. "It's just an old piece of wood. If you don't like the renovation, I'll have it restored to the way it was after Liam's winter exhibition."

She wanted me to wait again.

I had to wait for the party to end to reclaim my watch.

I had to wait for the art exhibition to end to reclaim my wooden cabin.

I always came last after everything else was over.

The manager of the manor, Eddie Romaine, hurried over. "Ms. Zane, there are reporters outside asking if the police are investigating you for abandoning your husband."

Liam turned pale. "Someone must have leaked this on purpose. My art exhibition was just announced. I can't have news like this."

Lindsay looked at me. "Did you contact the media?"

"No."

"No one else knew the details about the road closure."

"The police knew, the doctors knew, and the people who rescued me knew."

Liam muttered, "Lindsay, let it go. Myles feels aggrieved. It's only natural he'd want to embarrass me for once."

"He's not like that," Lindsay retorted without hesitation.

My fingertips curled slightly.

The very next second, she instructed Eddie, "Have him speak up as a family member. Say it was a marital dispute and Liam had nothing to do with it."

She trusted that I would not harm anyone. She was also certain I would continue to clean up her mess for her.

Reporters were crowding the lobby.

The elders of the Zane family had arrived as well.

Lindsay's father, Arthur Zane, pulled me aside and scolded me with a frown. "It was indeed improper for Lindsay to leave you there, but didn't you make it back safely? Liam's sister saved her life; what's the harm in yielding to him a little?"

"Why should I have to give up my watch and cabin too?"

"You've married with Lindsay. What could you possibly lack? Liam is all alone. How can he be compared to you?"

I looked at Lindsay.

She did not speak up for me; she simply placed a glass of warm water beside me.

"Let's handle the reporters first. We can talk about it when we get home."

The glass felt warm against my hand.

When my father passed away seven years ago, I was shivering with cold outside the funeral home; she had shoved a cup of warm water into my hands just like this and sat with me until dawn.

For a fleeting moment, I almost wanted to trust her again.

Liam suddenly emerged from the restroom; his wrist was bare.

"Where's the watch?" I asked.

He touched his wrist. "Lindsay took it just now; she said she wanted to put it in the manor's display case."

"What display case?"

He did not answer.

Just then, Eddie walked by carrying an exhibition setup list.

At the very top was written the theme of Liam's winter art exhibition—'Return to the Stars.'

In the deion of the exhibits, my Seven-Star Watch was labeled as a keepsake left behind by Liam's older sister. In the 'Provider' field was Lindsay's name.

I placed the setup list in front of Lindsay. "Explain this."

She glanced at it. "We're just borrowing the watch as an exhibit for the opening showcase. Liam's sister was named Starley, so the theme fits perfectly."

"You know full well whose keepsake that is."

"I didn't change its ownership status. I'll return it to you after the exhibition ends."

"But the deion says it's Starley's keepsake."

For the past year, Lindsay had been sending Alexa a letter every month. She did not urge me to reply, nor did she say anything about me going home. Most of the letters were just about trivial things. She talked about throwing away the breakfast containers at home, the light in the foyer breaking, and going to Starley's grave and finally telling her everything that had happened over the years. The last letter contained only one sentence: [I know now that you weren't having a tantrum that night.]I placed the hot tea by the window and walked to the gate. Lindsay had lost a lot of weight, and snow was stuck on her dark coat. She saw me and instinctively clenched her fingers before quickly relaxing. "I'm here to deliver the keys."She handed me the last spare key from the old Stargaze Manor. "No one can enter your wooden cabin anymore.""Thank you." I took the key.She looked at the wooden sign on the door. "Have you gotten used to living here?""Yes.""How cold is it at night?"

"No."Liam's eyes were red. "She clearly loves you. She just didn't know how to treat you well before." I looked at him. "When someone is drowning, it's pointless for those on the shore to debate whether they love that person or not."Lindsay came from the end of the corridor. Liam immediately grabbed her sleeve. "Lindsay, my sister's death anniversary is approaching. You promised to accompany me to see the snow on the mountains." She looked down at his hand for a moment. Every time he mentioned Starley, she would give in. This time, she slowly withdrew her sleeve. "I'll visit her grave, but I won't accompany you anymore." "Why?" "It's because what I owe is to her, not you." Liam's face turned ghastly pale. He still wanted to speak, but the staff had informed him to go for questioning. Lindsay walked up to me and handed over the signed divorce papers. "The authorization of the cabin has been revoked. The manor will no longer touch it." "Okay." "The fragments of

Liam finally admitted that he had deliberately broken the watch. "I just wanted to give it a try. It was Myles' watch. I wanted to know if you'd be so cruel as to blame me?"He sat by the hospital bed, his voice trembling as he continued, "And you didn't."Lindsay held the fragment in her hand, and the tip of her palm was scratched by the sharp edge. "What about his message for help?""I deleted it.""Why?""Because you would go back as soon as you saw it."Liam suddenly smiled. "Lindsay, why are you pretending to regret it now? It was you who made him get out of the car. He was frozen for four hours, but you were at the fireplace helping me with the watch. Even without me, you never put him first."The color gradually drained from Lindsay's face. She did not defend herself.Liam threw the phone onto the bed. "My sister saved you. You promised to take care of me.""I took care of you for seven years.""What about him?""You're not indebted to him, are you?"Liam's remark ma

On the day of the divorce mediation, Lindsay was 20 minutes late. She saw me in the corridor, and her pace quickened noticeably. "Why did you change your number?""My old number was on our family plan. I deactivated it.""You could've transferred it to your own name.""That wasn't necessary."She seemed to have something else to say, but Alexa had already pushed open the mediation room door. The mediator asked both of us what we wanted.I said, "Divorce."Lindsay said, "I disagree."Her voice faded away, and for the first time, I looked seriously at her. "Why?""We haven't reached the point where we need to divorce."“Abandoning me on a freezing night, taking my father's belongings, unlawfully occupying property I owned before marriage, forging authorization documents. Which one of those isn't enough?”"I'll handle these matters." Lindsay slid a document across the table. The authorization to use the cabin had been voluntarily revoked, and the manor was assuming full liabil

When Lindsay arrived at my apartment in the city, it was already dark. She stood outside the door, holding the box containing the Seven-Star Watch in her hand.I only opened the door a crack. "If there's anything you want, contact Alexa.""Here's your watch."I reached out to take it, but she did not let go immediately. "Let me in and talk.""That's not necessary.""Myles, I've asked the manor to suspend the art exhibition, and the wooden cabin will be restored to its original state.""That's what you ought to do.""Liam was surrounded by reporters today and had a seizure and was sent to the hospital. Are you satisfied now?"I looked up at her. "Did you come to return the watch or to put me on trial for his sake?"Lindsay's throat moved slightly. "I didn't mean it like that.""You never did."The watch fell into my palm, the missing cornered star-shaped rivets poking against my skin."Did you notice it was broken?""I did.""What did you say back then?"Lindsay did not a

The manor gate closed behind me.Alexa opened the car door for me. "All the luggage has been moved out of the Zane family's estate. Should we go to the apartment in the city or directly to your aunt's house?""The apartment.""What about the cabin?""I'll reclaim it tomorrow morning."The car left the mountain road, and I never looked back.An hour later, Lindsay finished the opening reception. She returned to the lounge and saw the divorce papers on the table. Her expression did not change much.Liam followed her. "Myles really left? Should we send a driver to go after him?""No." Lindsay turned to the last page of the agreement. My name was already signed. She let her fingers linger on the date for a while before closing the document. "He goes to a hotel for two days every time he's upset. He'll come back when he's had time to think things through.""But he left the wedding ring there.""He also took it off when we argued last year."She spoke firmly but took the ring ou
