Chapter 3

Author: Kiya
I refused without hesitation, "That's not happening."

Tears rolled down Lylia's face. "There's nowhere else in the pack cemetery that's this good. Elena, please, just think of my grandmother…"

My answer was firm and immediate. "Don't even think about it."

Ethan suddenly stepped in front of me and said in a low voice, "Elena, I have a say in this, too. Our pup's grave belongs to the pack. There's nothing strange about a shared grave, so stop restraining yourself with those outdated rules."

His words felt like a blade to my chest.

I grabbed his collar and slapped him across the face. The sharp crack echoed through the wooden house.

"Say that again if you dare," I warned. "Let me be clear, Ethan. If you try to touch my pup's grave, it'll be over my dead body."

Lylia hurried forward and shielded him, putting on a frightened act. "Elena, if you're angry, take it out on me. Don't make things hard for Ethan. If it comes to it, I'll just take my grandmother's ashes back to the countryside."

I thought this ridiculous farce would end before long. But that night, Ethan suddenly grabbed my shoulders in agitation, and the force of his grip was so strong that it felt like he was about to crush my bones.

"Lylia already gave up on the idea of a shared grave." He then demanded angrily, "What exactly are you trying to do now? Why would you send her a threatening message? It's a shame our pup had a mother like you, and it's no wonder why it chose to leave!"

I stood there in a daze as I listened to him, and tears began falling uncontrollably.

Inside me, my wolf let out an anguished howl.

"What did you say?" I asked.

Ethan seemed to realize he'd gone too far, so he softened his tone. "I know you're angry, but that doesn't mean you had to threaten her. You scared Lylia so badly that she couldn't sleep all night, and even her wolf has weakened."

I stubbornly pulled out my communication device, determined to call the Pack Enforcers and have them preside over the situation. "Ethan, I will never admit to something I didn't do. I'm dissolving our mate bond no matter what!"

He believed Lylia's clumsy little scheme without hesitation, yet he wouldn't believe me, his mate who had spent ten years by his side.

Suddenly, I remembered our marking ceremony. Standing before the Moon Goddess, he had looked at me with a smile and sworn, "I'll believe everything you say. I won't believe a single word that didn't come from you."

That privilege still existed, but it just didn't belong to me anymore. Now, it belonged to someone else.

Once upon a time, I had been his personal navigator. He used to joke that without me, he would never find his way anywhere. Yet for Lylia's sake, he had studied maps, memorized roads, and learned how to navigate the territory on his own.

If that was the case, then I had no place left in his life.

The argument went nowhere. The wooden door slammed shut with a loud bang, and Ethan went again to find Lylia.

He probably didn't even realize that he was spending less and less time in this house.

After finishing my statement with the Pack Enforcers, I had just returned home when a voice message from the cemetery caretaker came through, his tone laced with urgency.

"Ms. Forbes, a group of wolves just showed up at your pup's grave. They're digging it up to inter another set of ashes in there. They said Alpha Ethan approved it."

My heart dropped.

By the time I arrived, several burly wolves had already dug halfway through the grave. Cold slabs of stone were scattered everywhere.

I rushed forward and shoved them out of the way with all my strength. "Who are you lot? Get away from here! Don't touch my pup's grave!"

A few of them grabbed me immediately and threw me to the ground. My back slammed against the rocks, and pain shot through my body.

"You're so damn loud!" one of them snapped impatiently. "This place is going to be Lylia's grandmother's grave from now on. We'll do whatever we want with it."

They pinned me down so tightly that I couldn't move.

I yelled at them with everything I had while calling Ethan's name through the mind link.

"Where's Ethan? Where's Lylia? I don't believe he'd do this. He promised me he'd drop the idea!"

The wolves ignored me completely and continued digging.

Helplessly, I watched them pry open my pup's urn. They cleared out the center of the grave and carefully placed Lylia's grandmother's urn there instead.

My pup's urn was tossed aside. Then, one of the wolves lifted his foot and brought it straight down toward it.

Ethan lay on the bed in the infirmary, staring blankly at the notice sent by the Pack Enforcers. The document stated Lylia's sentence—three years of imprisonment in the wolf prison. He immediately sent the news to me. He wanted me to be happy. He wanted me to know that Lylia had finally paid the price for her actions. But just like before, his message vanished into silence. There was no reply. He even wanted to go find me himself, but he couldn't even get out of bed. His leg hadn't healed, and everyone in the pack had forced him to stay for treatment. They had taken away all the maps, his communication device, and even the directional markers of the territory. He was completely trapped in the infirmary, like a caged animal. At the same time, the pack's situation continued to worsen.Because Ethan had been so occupied with Lylia, he had neglected the pack's management, and after the leak, they had suffered massive resource losses. Their relationship with rival packs grew increas

"So you borrowed money from loan sharks just to stage all of this, just to go after Elena and seize the Luna position?"Ethan let out a quiet, humorless laugh, his eyes filled with murderous intent.Lylia had no way to deny it anymore. After a brief pause, she lowered her head and nodded. "I… I just wanted to be Luna. I liked you, and I thought that if Elena left, you'd finally see me, and you'd choose me."Back then, she had truly believed that once she became Luna, the pack's resources would be at her disposal, and paying off the debt would be easy. She hadn't expected things to spiral like this. The interest kept piling up. The creditors eventually tracked her down, cursed her out, and smashed up her place, leaving nothing intact. With no way out, she had taken the risk and stolen pack secrets, planning to sell them to a rival pack in exchange for enough money to clear everything. She looked at Ethan with a pitiful expression, her eyes filled with desperate pleading."Ethan,

What I didn't expect was how quickly Ethan managed to find my place. However, he looked utterly disheveled. His hair was messy, his clothes were torn and snagged from branches, and the exposed skin on his arms and neck was covered in swollen mosquito bites. His eyes were bloodshot as he stared at me, desperation written all over his face. His voice came out rough and hoarse."Elena, I've been looking everywhere for you. I kept circling those alleys over and over, and I almost lost my way. You know I've never had a sense of direction, but for you, I forced myself to remember every road. So, please just come home with me, okay?"As I looked at him, something in me softened. In the end, I agreed to talk to him."Ethan, there's no future for us. We're already over, and the Elders have dissolved our mate bond. I've also filed a case with the Pack Enforcers. I'm going to hold both you and Lylia responsible."The color drained from his face as he staggered to his feet and shook his head

After leaving Ethan, I went to a human town far from any pack territory. It was neutral ground for werewolves, a place without pack rules or hierarchical constraints. In the first half of my life, I had followed Ethan and managed pack affairs alongside him, and everything I learned during that time was more than enough for me to stand on my own here. Even without him, I could live just fine. Our mate bond had already been dissolved, with the Elders' Council overseeing the process, and all the remaining matters were handled by them.Meanwhile, the footage from the cemetery kept looping on my communication device. In it, Lylia lay on the ground, crying hysterically, "Don't touch my grandmother's ashes. Stop!"But no one listened to her. It was just like before, when no one had listened to me.No one had heard my cries, and no one had stepped forward to help. I had been left sitting there in the dirt, watching helplessly as my pup's ashes were scattered into the wind.I wanted Lyl

When Lylia found out she was being transferred, she didn't care that Ethan was in the middle of an Elders' Council meeting. She shoved the doors open and stormed straight in."Ethan, what's this supposed to mean? Are you transferring me? Didn't you promise me a promotion? If you send me to some remote territorial outpost, what's my future going to look like?"Ethan looked at her, his gaze icy. "If you don't want to go, then leave the pack and become a rogue."Lylia froze, staring at him like she didn't recognize the werewolf in front of her.The pack members in the room exchanged glances, their voices dropping into low murmurs. "What happened between Alpha Ethan and Beta Lylia? Weren't they practically family before?""Looks like Alpha Ethan drove his own mate away because of Beta Lylia.""A mistress will always be a mistress. She was never going to belong here."Lylia's face went from pale to livid as humiliation settled in. "Ethan… You can't do this to me!"Before he could

Ethan stood there in stunned silence for a long time. Lylia kept crying in his ear, but he barely heard what she was saying.By the time he arrived at the cemetery, everything was already over. The Pack Enforcers had scattered Lylia's grandmother's ashes into the wind, just like what had happened to my pup.Lylia collapsed onto the cold, hard ground, crying hysterically, "Ethan, that was my grandmother! You have to stand up for me! Who could be so cruel as to treat the dead like this?"Ethan's heart dropped at her words.Suddenly, he remembered how I had looked not long ago. I had been lying on the ground just like this, desperately gathering my pup's ashes while crying in despair. This was what it felt like to lose the ashes of a loved one, yet he hadn't realized my despair until Lylia experienced the same thing and broke down in tears. How much pain had I been in back then? When Lylia saw that he still hadn't responded, she tugged at his sleeve, crying even harder.Ethan fina
