Chapter 4

Author: Kiya
My voice tore out of my throat. "No!"

A sharp crack echoed in the air as the urn shattered against the cold stone. My pup's ashes were swept up by the wind and scattered everywhere.

I lay on the ground alone, scrambling desperately to gather them.

My pup had been so small. There had only been a tiny handful of ashes to begin with, and once the wind caught them, they scattered in every direction.

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't save any of them.

Something inside me collapsed completely. Even my wolf grew weak and faint.

By the time the grave had been sealed again, Ethan and Lylia finally arrived.

A hint of satisfaction flickered across Lylia's face. Nevertheless, she rushed forward and slapped one of the wolves, pretending to be furious.

"What are you doing? I told you Elena hadn't agreed. I told you not to come! My grandmother's ashes can stay in the countryside. How could you take it upon yourselves to dig up the grave?"

The wolves lowered their heads immediately. "W-We misunderstood. We thought your grandmother's burial was urgent. We're sorry, Ethan."

Ethan looked at the ruined grave, then at me, who was covered in dirt and tears.

I was clutching a broken stick in my hand, but not even a trace of ashes remained.

The anger on his face faded almost instantly. He crouched beside me and reached out, as though he meant to comfort me.

"Elena, what's done is done. Why don't we just let it go? They know they messed up. We can go to the chapel, light a candle for the pup, and ask the Moon Goddess for forgiveness and grace.”

I shot to my feet and grabbed his collar, screaming like someone who had completely lost her mind, "They did it on purpose! Ethan, this has to be repaid in kind. I'm going to smash Lylia's grandmother's urn and scatter her ashes. Only then will this be over!"

Lylia's eyes reddened immediately. She clutched Ethan's arm and began to cry.

"Elena, my grandmother was already so old. Please don't humiliate her like this. Besides, those wolves are distant relatives of mine. They just have a quick temper, but they're not bad guys. They would never intentionally destroy your pup's urn."

So, was my pup supposed to endure that humiliation? Who would Ethan choose to believe?

He hesitated for a moment. Then, his body shifted slightly, placing himself in front of Lylia and blocking my view of her.

I stared at him in disbelief.

This was how he treated his own pup. For the sake of a Beta she-wolf, he couldn't care less about his pup's ashes.

"You're willing to go this far for Lylia?" I asked.

Ethan frowned, impatience creeping into his voice. "I just don't want things to get more complicated. If this ends up in front of the Elders' Council, it's not going to end well for anybody. What's done is done. Let's leave it at that. Consider it even for the threats you sent to Lylia."

I bit down so hard that the inside of my mouth tore, and the taste of blood spread across my tongue.

I shoved him away and spoke slowly, "I told you already. I didn't send any threats to her. Nobody gets to pin a crime on me that I didn't commit, and nobody gets to touch my pup's grave!"

Then, without even looking at his expression, I smashed the window of his SUV. I got into my own car and drove away without turning back.

Three days later, a guilt-ridden Ethan spent two full days studying every road around the territory. He even drew a detailed map.

He planned to show me this as a "surprise".

But when he returned home, the wooden cabin stood empty. All of my belongings were gone, and not even the faintest trace of my scent remained.

Lylia's voice suddenly crackled through the communication device, trembling with sobs, "Ethan, the cemetery caretaker said I don't have permission to bury my grandmother in the plot she's currently in.

"What's going on? Did Elena sell the pup's grave? The Pack Enforcers showed up and started digging without saying a word…

"Hey! Those are my grandmother's ashes! How could you scatter them?"

Ethan lay on the bed in the infirmary, staring blankly at the notice sent by the Pack Enforcers. The document stated Lylia's sentence—three years of imprisonment in the wolf prison. He immediately sent the news to me. He wanted me to be happy. He wanted me to know that Lylia had finally paid the price for her actions. But just like before, his message vanished into silence. There was no reply. He even wanted to go find me himself, but he couldn't even get out of bed. His leg hadn't healed, and everyone in the pack had forced him to stay for treatment. They had taken away all the maps, his communication device, and even the directional markers of the territory. He was completely trapped in the infirmary, like a caged animal. At the same time, the pack's situation continued to worsen.Because Ethan had been so occupied with Lylia, he had neglected the pack's management, and after the leak, they had suffered massive resource losses. Their relationship with rival packs grew increas

"So you borrowed money from loan sharks just to stage all of this, just to go after Elena and seize the Luna position?"Ethan let out a quiet, humorless laugh, his eyes filled with murderous intent.Lylia had no way to deny it anymore. After a brief pause, she lowered her head and nodded. "I… I just wanted to be Luna. I liked you, and I thought that if Elena left, you'd finally see me, and you'd choose me."Back then, she had truly believed that once she became Luna, the pack's resources would be at her disposal, and paying off the debt would be easy. She hadn't expected things to spiral like this. The interest kept piling up. The creditors eventually tracked her down, cursed her out, and smashed up her place, leaving nothing intact. With no way out, she had taken the risk and stolen pack secrets, planning to sell them to a rival pack in exchange for enough money to clear everything. She looked at Ethan with a pitiful expression, her eyes filled with desperate pleading."Ethan,

What I didn't expect was how quickly Ethan managed to find my place. However, he looked utterly disheveled. His hair was messy, his clothes were torn and snagged from branches, and the exposed skin on his arms and neck was covered in swollen mosquito bites. His eyes were bloodshot as he stared at me, desperation written all over his face. His voice came out rough and hoarse."Elena, I've been looking everywhere for you. I kept circling those alleys over and over, and I almost lost my way. You know I've never had a sense of direction, but for you, I forced myself to remember every road. So, please just come home with me, okay?"As I looked at him, something in me softened. In the end, I agreed to talk to him."Ethan, there's no future for us. We're already over, and the Elders have dissolved our mate bond. I've also filed a case with the Pack Enforcers. I'm going to hold both you and Lylia responsible."The color drained from his face as he staggered to his feet and shook his head

After leaving Ethan, I went to a human town far from any pack territory. It was neutral ground for werewolves, a place without pack rules or hierarchical constraints. In the first half of my life, I had followed Ethan and managed pack affairs alongside him, and everything I learned during that time was more than enough for me to stand on my own here. Even without him, I could live just fine. Our mate bond had already been dissolved, with the Elders' Council overseeing the process, and all the remaining matters were handled by them.Meanwhile, the footage from the cemetery kept looping on my communication device. In it, Lylia lay on the ground, crying hysterically, "Don't touch my grandmother's ashes. Stop!"But no one listened to her. It was just like before, when no one had listened to me.No one had heard my cries, and no one had stepped forward to help. I had been left sitting there in the dirt, watching helplessly as my pup's ashes were scattered into the wind.I wanted Lyl

When Lylia found out she was being transferred, she didn't care that Ethan was in the middle of an Elders' Council meeting. She shoved the doors open and stormed straight in."Ethan, what's this supposed to mean? Are you transferring me? Didn't you promise me a promotion? If you send me to some remote territorial outpost, what's my future going to look like?"Ethan looked at her, his gaze icy. "If you don't want to go, then leave the pack and become a rogue."Lylia froze, staring at him like she didn't recognize the werewolf in front of her.The pack members in the room exchanged glances, their voices dropping into low murmurs. "What happened between Alpha Ethan and Beta Lylia? Weren't they practically family before?""Looks like Alpha Ethan drove his own mate away because of Beta Lylia.""A mistress will always be a mistress. She was never going to belong here."Lylia's face went from pale to livid as humiliation settled in. "Ethan… You can't do this to me!"Before he could

Ethan stood there in stunned silence for a long time. Lylia kept crying in his ear, but he barely heard what she was saying.By the time he arrived at the cemetery, everything was already over. The Pack Enforcers had scattered Lylia's grandmother's ashes into the wind, just like what had happened to my pup.Lylia collapsed onto the cold, hard ground, crying hysterically, "Ethan, that was my grandmother! You have to stand up for me! Who could be so cruel as to treat the dead like this?"Ethan's heart dropped at her words.Suddenly, he remembered how I had looked not long ago. I had been lying on the ground just like this, desperately gathering my pup's ashes while crying in despair. This was what it felt like to lose the ashes of a loved one, yet he hadn't realized my despair until Lylia experienced the same thing and broke down in tears. How much pain had I been in back then? When Lylia saw that he still hadn't responded, she tugged at his sleeve, crying even harder.Ethan fina
