Chapter 7: The End

Author: RiverHill
I was enjoying leisurely days in London.

As I sat lazily sunbathing downstairs, a shadow fell across me.

It was a colleague who had traveled from City Andes to find me.

My divorce from Ethan had caused such a stir that almost everyone at the company knew where my family lived.

I was delighted to discover several more figures under the large tree outside.

Looking closer, I saw they were all my former colleagues from the business department.

From them, I learned that Carter Group now had no leadership, and they'd actually made Sophia the head.

Various business partners were expressing dissatisfaction.

Especially the trade association I'd secured by drinking six shots of vodka before leaving.

Due to Sophia's incompetence, they'd already withdrawn their investment and were seeking new partners.

Carter Group was on the verge of collapse. They'd come to ask me to lead them to find new opportunities elsewhere.

My conflict with Ethan had affected their livelihoods to some degree.

After the trial ended, Ethan stopped me.He looked at me earnestly, "For the sake of how I once saved you, give me a chance to start over."Sophia chimed in from the side, "Claire, if Ethan hadn't helped the prosecutor find evidence of his mother's asset transfers, the second trial wouldn't have started so quickly, and you wouldn't have gotten your settlement so easily."Ethan can't live without you. Please forgive us."I really can't let go of Ethan. We could even share him if you want."I looked at Ethan. His silence meant he agreed with this proposal.I gestured for them to follow me to a shadowy corner of the courthouse. They were delighted, thinking they'd convinced me, and followed eagerly.Once we stopped, I looked around to make sure no one was watching.I raised my folder and slapped Sophia hard across the face, leaving a bright red mark.Sophia was first shocked, then dazed. After recovering, she grabbed Ethan's sleeve, crying, "Ethan, hit her back for me!"She ma

In the quiet café, Ethan and I sat across from each other with what felt like an ocean between us.The server brought our drinks and pastries. He finally broke the silence, "If Sophia is why you want to leave me, I can send her away."He pulled out his wallet, revealing a photo of him and Sophia. In the picture, Sophia clearly looked like a college student, but her belly was slightly rounded. His voice was hoarse, barely concealing his desperation, "I was young and reckless. Sophia had just started university when I got her pregnant.""I wanted to marry her right away. But the Carter family was struggling then, and my mother refused. She wanted me to marry into wealth instead—become a son-in-law to another family."He hung his head, "My mother forced Sophia to get an abortion and sent her abroad to study."He paused, "I failed her. So when she came back, I kept trying to make amends. But I never realized I was hurting you."He held up his phone, playing security footage from o

Ethan received the court summons and texted me with suspicion."What scheme are you plotting now?"I didn't respond.A few days later, he bombarded me with frantic messages, demanding I continue following up on projects.I replied, "I've resigned."I blocked him on all platforms.A close colleague called me in tears, "Please come back, Claire. Mr. Carter has gone completely insane looking for you."He's threatening us—if we can't find you, he'll dock all our salaries this month."I was speechless."Then come work for me."I looked around my family's bed-and-breakfast, "Room and board included, and I'll pay you proper wages."After seven years working for the Carter family, I'd accumulated my own network and capital. It was wrong of me to let my issues with Ethan affect ordinary employees. I should take responsibility for them.My colleague fell silent and hung up.Half a month later, Ethan finally realized I wasn't coming back.He flew to London and knocked on my door.

I rushed to the company conference room, where everyone sat waiting—Ethan, Sophia, and the other colleagues. As soon as I walked in, my coworkers shot me resentful looks.I smiled awkwardly and opened the case file, only to discover it was the project Sophia had taken over from me.The moment Ethan saw me, he erupted. "Do you realize your mistake cost the company ten times the normal commission?"Sophia chimed in smugly, "Exactly. If you can't handle the work, don't take it on. Now we all have to suffer because of you."I spoke up, "I apologize for any trouble, but I wasn't responsible for this project."Ethan pointed to the name on the contract, "Your signature is right here as project lead."I flipped to the final page of the contract, "According to company policy, the signatory on the last page is the final responsible party."I projected the signature onto the computer screen, where it clearly read: Sophia Miller. All eyes turned to Sophia. Her face went deathly pale.It

The elevator doors opened on the 99th floor. I hobbled on my crutch, step by step toward the emergency stairwell. The wound on my foot hadn't healed yet, and my heels were rubbing it raw again. My phone buzzed with a message about Ethan and his guest attending a business association event on the first floor.I was about to get up to notify him when Ethan appeared before me, grasping my ankle. "Just wear flat sneakers next time."He pulled out a pair of flats and helped me change into them. "From now on, you don't need to accompany me to corporate events anymore."At the same time, Sophia opened the office door and emerged in an elegant dress. She walked to Ethan's side.Ethan stood and took her delicate hand. "You're not really suitable for these occasions. Sophia will take your place."I didn't react, just murmured a quiet "oh."Ethan frowned slightly. "Don't you want to ask why?"I gritted my teeth. "Mr. Carter, I still have business partnerships to handle, and they're wait
