Chapter 1

Author: Unleashed Dog
In the darkness, a suffocating sensation crashed over me, making my heart seize in sharp, wrenching spasms.

As it turned out, Maddox Harlow had convinced my husband, Trevor Penn, to abuse me. Then, Maddox had pursued me himself, persuading me to fake my death and abandon everything just so I could be with him.

However, this very man who claimed he would marry me was now planning to marry Callista Whitcombe right after burying me alive.

But now, I'd woken up too early, and it was too dark to see if there was food or water in the coffin. The cramped, narrow space also made it nearly impossible to breathe.

Through the wooden lid, Maddox's voice sounded muffled, yet every word pierced me like a blade, pinning me firmly inside the coffin.

"Back then, when Callie's status as an illegitimate child was exposed, her engagement to Trevor was handed to Judith, her younger sister. Callie lost her love, so I have to help her gain power and status instead. I promised her that I'd always have her back.

"As for Judith, in order to punish her over these past few years, I had Trevor torment her physically. Letting her go now is mercy. And she loves me so much anyway. She'll forever remain in the beautiful dream I wove for her."

Someone next to him hesitated slightly, sounding a little reluctant.

"But Judith doesn't know that faking her death means actually being buried. Burying a living person underground for seven full days is too risky. And Judith is terrified of the dark and has severe claustrophobia. What if something happens to her inside the coffin…"

"It won't!" Maddox snapped, his tone absolute.

"The Whitcombes are very cautious, so we need to go all the way with this act. Seven days is nothing. And in reality, she'll only be conscious for about two of them. What could possibly go wrong?

"Besides, Trevor promised me that every time he finished beating her, he'd lock her in a closet, so she should be used to it by now.

"Callie has waited five years for this chance. We must make sure everything is foolproof. Once everything is settled and we're married, I'll get a fake marriage certificate with Judith overseas to fool her. We'll give her everything she needs and keep her comfortable so she never returns to the country."

Their footsteps faded away. I used every ounce of my strength, but I couldn't make even the slightest noise.

The drug that induced the fake death kept my mind clear, yet my body—and my vocal cords—were paralyzed. I was unable to make any sounds.

As my claustrophobia flared, I bit down hard on my tongue, forcing myself to stay calm. My back was already drenched in cold sweat. The pitch-black darkness, where I couldn't even see my own hand, made me think about the last five years I'd spent married to Trevor.

Every time he was done abusing me, he'd lock me inside the closet afterward. The painful memories came crashing over me like a tidal wave, making my stomach twist violently.

Two years ago, after being locked in the closet again, it had been Maddox who saved me. The moment he opened the doors, I felt as though I'd seen an angel—someone who could drive away all the darkness in my life.

From then on, Maddox pursued me relentlessly. He tended to my battered body, soothed my shattered heart, and told me to be brave and fight back against the abuse.

I foolishly believed that I'd found my salvation. What I didn't know was that every ounce of suffering I endured had been orchestrated by Maddox himself.

He asked Trevor to hurt me, then turned around and played the role of the hero who healed me.

And all of this was for my older sister, Callista Whitcombe.

I bit down hard on my lip, desperate to force my body to move.

Suddenly, I heard the door open. The sharp click of high heels approached, followed by a soft, sweet voice.

"Maddox, will Judith really be okay buried underground for seven days? She's being buried today… She is my little sister after all, and it just feels a bit too cruel."

I felt as if I'd grabbed onto a lifeline. Inside, I screamed desperately, "Save me! Please, just open the coffin and take a look! You just need to take one glance, and you'll see I'm already awake!

"I don't want to be buried alive! I don't want to experience the agonizing pain of suffocating in the darkness!"

Callista cried and laughed at the same time, looking almost deranged. She stared at Maddox with hatred and shouted sharply, "Anyone else can call me cruel and ruthless, Maddox, but you don't get to! You're the one who started all of this! Without you fanning the flames, things would've never ended up this way."Let me tell you something. When we were doing it next to Judith's coffin that day, she was right inside listening. She heard with her own ears how the man who kept claiming he loved her called her disgusting! She heard him sleep with her own sister!"Maddox's face paled as he let out a pained roar. "Shut up! I beg you, stop talking! Stop making me feel like I'm being carved apart!"I watched all of this numbly, my soul feeling detached, and an overwhelming exhaustion washing over me. Why did I still have to watch all this even after I was already dead?I was even hoping that Callista and Maddox—the wretched pair—would stay together forever. They were a perfect match for ea

"I'm guilty. I've committed an unforgivable sin!" Maddox wailed. He dropped to his knees, clutching his head as his body curled in on itself, and he began retching from the agony."Judy… I was the one who killed our baby! I was the one who killed you! If ghosts exist, then come kill me! Come take my life! I won't resist in the slightest!"I let out a scoff. I was a ghost now, but I didn't have the power to hurt anyone. Otherwise, I'd turn into a vengeful spirit without any hesitation.Isaac, who was standing nearby, spoke carefully. "Mr. Harlow, the person who caused Ms. Whitcombe's death was… someone else."I've already conducted a thorough investigation. The only person who came into contact with the fake-death drug was Ms. Callista Whitcombe. "And surveillance footage shows that on the day the younger Ms. Whitcombe was buried, Callista opened the coffin, seemed to say something to the body inside, then took away the food and water you'd prepared."Maddox jerked his head up.

When we returned to the cemetery, it felt as though an invisible hand tightened around my heart.Even though I was only a spirit now, I still felt suffocated, with cold sweat pouring down my back. My very soul seemed to grow fainter.Being buried alive really was the cruelest torture imaginable. The gravesite was in shambles, with my coffin forcibly pried open. Inside, excrement was smeared everywhere, yet it still couldn't hide the countless scratches covering the inner walls. Those were all traces of my desperate struggle to survive. The scene was too horrific, and Maddox just stood there in a daze."What have I done?" he muttered, unable to believe what he was seeing. "I buried Judy alive for a whole seven days! No food, no water, just curled up in that tiny, confined space.""Judy's always been afraid of the dark, and she's claustrophobic too! How desperate and hopeless she must've felt!"She must've fought so hard to live, clawing at the coffin until all ten of her fingers

Not long after, the Harlows' security rushed in. They restrained Trevor and dragged him away.Maddox's face was beaten black and blue, but he didn't care in the slightest. He simply staggered toward my body, pulled it tightly into his arms, and muttered to himself."Judy isn't dead. Doctor! Quick, get the doctor now! Why hasn't the fake-death drug worn off yet?"While waiting for the doctor, Callista cautiously approached him."Maddox," she said softly. "Judith is already dead. I'm heartbroken too. If only we had dug her up sooner. But what's done is done, and the living have to move on. And now, our plan is even more foolproof—the dead can't talk."But before the Whitcombes hear anything, we have to shut Trevor up. Let the outside world think that he's gone mad and dug up his wife's grave because he missed her too much."If my dad finds out about this, I'm done for. Maddox, you promised you'd be my biggest support. You'll protect me, right?"Maddox clung to me, his eyes vacant

The wedding hall erupted."Has Trevor lost it? She's already dead, and he still dug up the corpse? That's bad luck!""When Judith was alive, Trevor beat her every single day. What? Was he planning on hitting her even more after her death?"The sudden turn of events sent whispers and speculation rippling through the crowd.Maddox froze for a moment before he finally spoke up, frowning. "What nonsense are you spouting? Judith was already dead to begin with!"I scoffed coldly. Even now, Maddox was still putting on an act. After all, if the truth came out, Callista would never be able to become the Whitcombe heiress.Isaac panted heavily, wiping sweat from his forehead as he said, "It's true! I saw Trevor digging Ms. Whitcombe up with my own eyes! The body is already reeking! You'd better go see for yourself!"Maddox panicked."That's impossible! I clearly…" he muttered under his breath before quickly steadying himself.Just as he was about to move, Trevor walked slowly into the h

I had no sense of day or night inside the coffin. I became so hungry that I gnawed on wood. I scratched and clawed like a madwoman, trying to pry the lid open, until all ten of my fingernails were torn off.Excrement filled the space, and the already thin air was mixed with the nauseating stench.I didn't know how many days had passed when I finally died in agony. My soul drifted outward, rising from beneath the ground toward the surface.I thought my soul would finally be free, but instead, I found myself forcibly pulled to Maddox's side.I watched coldly as he helped Callista pick out her wedding dress."Maddox, our wedding is only two days away," Callista said softly. "I actually really wanted Judith to be our witness. What a shame…"Maddox wrapped his arms around her and frowned slightly. "By my calculations, Judith should be waking up soon. I wonder if the food is enough for her or if she'll be scared…"At those words, Callista's expression fell. She clenched her teeth, b
