* Penny *

I was pouting, sitting cross-legged on the edge of my bed, while Sofia, one of the older servants in Magnolia Manor, moved efficiently around my room, folding clothes into a pair of open suitcases. Her hands were practiced, her eyes kind but distant, as though she didn't want to make this harder by showing any sort of emotion.

I stared out the tall window, past the gardens blooming in late spring sunlight. It was beautiful out, calm, like the world didn't know I was leaving.

Even though my brother Darren and his wife were already waiting for me in their home at the U.S. I wasn't ready. Not really. Not emotionally. This place wasn't just a house. It was a whole world to me.

And I would miss it terribly. I would miss the sleepy rhythm of the mornings, the laughter echoing from the kitchen, the distant hum of the sea. I would miss Jullie, with her soft scolding and fierce hugs, and her two boys who had somehow carved a place in my heart without even trying.

  • Love Lies and Deceit   Chapter 89. The morning after note

    * Penny *The sunlight was kind when it slipped past the curtains, painting the bedroom in pale gold. I blinked against it, warmth stretching across my skin before my thoughts fully caught up with my body.I reached out instinctively, my fingers brushing soft linen sheets instead of skin.He was gone.Not in the way that left a hollow. The bed still held the shape of him. The scent of him, faint cologne and warm cotton, still lingered on the pillow beside me. But he wasn't there.My heart clenched, just a little. Then I noticed it.A small, folded note on the nightstand, weighted down by the cap of his pen.I pushed myself up slowly, the robe slipping down my arm. My body felt oddly lighter, like some invisible burden had been eased in the night. I tucked my legs beneath me and reached for the note, fingers trembling slightly.The handwriting was unmistakably his, clean, sharp, controlled. Just like him.Good morning, sleepyhead.Didn't want to wake you. You looked too peaceful (and f

  • Love Lies and Deceit   Chapter 88. Intimate Tensions

    * Alex Hamilton *I didn't know what I expected when I walked through that door tonight. Maybe an argument. Maybe a slammed door. But not this.Not Penny, standing in the soft golden light of her apartment, robe slipping slightly from one shoulder, eyes full of a hundred kinds of fear she didn't want to name. She didn't ask me to stay. But she didn't ask me to go either."Are you tired?" I asked softly, almost stupidly.She blinked at me, surprised by the question. "I... I don't know.""Do you want me to go?"A pause. Her lips parted like she might say yes, but no sound came. She just shook her head, barely.I nodded once, stepping closer."I'll stay. Just for a little while. Just until you fall asleep."But sleep wasn't coming. Not for her. Not for me.She moved first. Maybe it was the silence, or the closeness, or the tension that had been simmering between us for weeks, months, maybe, if we were honest.When I leaned in, our foreheads touched before our lips did.The kiss was soft

  • Love Lies and Deceit   Chapter 87. Late night visitor

    * Penny *I found it hard to sleep in my apartment, even though it sat like a jewel in the heart of the city, guarded by layers of digital security and round-the-clock personnel. It was a luxury place, granite countertops, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, smart lighting that adjusted to my mood, but even the most expensive cage still felt like a cage when your mind refused to quiet down.Ever since that anonymous warning arrived, unmarked, unsettling, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched. Followed. Stalked not by footsteps but by some invisible thread tugging at my sense of ease. Lance, predictably, had gone into overdrive. He insisted I return to Magnolia Manor, where the grounds were patrolled and the walls whispered old safety. But going back meant surrendering. Me, the baby sister, tucked under his arm again. Watched. Directed. Protected to the point of suffocation.And I couldn't do that. Not anymore. Not now.When the doorbell rang, I froze. My spine stiffened, e

  • Love Lies and Deceit   Chapter 8. Penny’s warning and Lance

    * Alex Hamilton *My phone buzzed again on the marble countertop, a second tremor against the silence of the apartment. I didn't move. My espresso had long gone cold, a bitter line of shadow in the bottom of a white porcelain cup, untouched since I made it nearly thirty minutes ago. I was still staring at Penny's message from the night before."We need to set the date. Lance said it's ours to decide."I should've felt something. Joy, maybe. Relief. The kind of quiet certainty people write vows about. But all I felt was... hollow. Like the words had knocked loose a part of me I hadn't realized was fragile until it rang empty in my chest.I locked my screen, but my phone lit up again almost immediately.Lance DankworthCome to my office. Now. Don't bring anyone.No greeting. No explanation. Just those four words, clipped and cold. I knew that tone. It wasn't just business, this was a strategic emergency. The kind Lance only invoked when a fire was already burning under the floorboards.

  • Love Lies and Deceit   Chapter 85. A warning and doubt

    * Penny *I opened my door the next morning to find a single cream-colored envelope, tucked neatly under the handle like an afterthought. It sat there innocently, as if it belonged, as if someone had placed it with care and not urgency. No name on the front. No address. No stamp. Just... waiting.For a fleeting second, I smiled. Maybe it was from Alex. Something sweet. Romantic. He had a way of doing things like that, old-fashioned gestures with modern charm. Maybe he'd written me a letter, because he believed words lasted longer on paper than they did in texts.But then I realized, my name wasn't even on it.I carried it into the kitchen like it might break if I held it too tightly. My fingers trembled as I slid one under the flap. The paper inside was thick, almost too rigid, and the message was typed in a font that reeked of boardrooms, legal memos, and generational wealth. Cold. Precise. Impersonal.There was no greeting.No sign-off.Just a message:"This is not out of malice, bu

  • Love Lies and Deceit   Chapter 84. Engagement conversation with Lance

    * Alex Hamilton *Later that day, behind closed doors, where it was just us. Penny's text came through at 4:47 PM, simple and clear. "We need to set the date. Lance said it's ours to decide."I stared at the message for a full minute, rereading each word like it might rearrange itself. Like it might mean something else. It didn't.He'd backed down, at least enough to hand us the reins. That was something I hadn't thought possible this early. And Penny... God, she'd done it. Faced her brother. Claimed this for us.My fingers hovered above the reply screen, then I locked the phone instead and reached for my keys.By the time I got to her apartment, as she move out of the Magnolia manor. She was waiting by the window, barefoot, hair pulled into something half-undone and wholly distracting. The same fire I'd seen in her eyes last night hadn't dimmed. If anything, it had grown."I got your message," I said."I figured you'd come instead of calling.""I needed to see you."She smiled, just
