But India’s voice was fierce as she cut him off. “Marcus! I know you cheated on me. But did you lie to this woman to steal her from your best friend, who you said was like a brother, family to you?”

Marcus’s shoulders slumped. His eyes flicked to Denver, desperate for mercy. “It was a mistake. I never meant for any of this.”

Vanessa let out a brittle laugh. “You meant it enough to lie. You meant it enough to keep him in the dark and your fiancée, while stealing me from him.”

Denver clenched his fists. “You told me you were happy that I had finally found someone to love, Marcus. You lied. Is there anything about you that’s real?”

“Denver, I—” Marcus started, but the words faltered, guilt choking him.

India stepped back, her dress whispering against the floor. “How long, Marcus? How many women have you been cheating with on me? How many lies have you told us?”

Marcus’s voice was raw, pleading. “India, I love you. I do. Vanessa was hurt, and I was trying to console her when I became weak. I don’t want to lose you. I thought—”

“You thought you could have everything,” India said sharply. “You thought you could lie to my face, stand up here in front of everyone we know, and I’d just… what? Say ‘I do’ and pretend none of it mattered?”

India’s anger broke through. “I’m not sorry, Marcus, for being in love with your best friend. But it shouldn't matter since you’ve been cheating on me anyway. Now it's all out in the open, so let's go our separate ways." She turned to Vanessa.

“You can have my leftovers because I'm done with him.” India’s voice cracked, but she stood tall, even more determined to marry Denver. “As for this man, right here. He’s mine. From the top of his head to the bottom of his feet. This is who I want to be married to and love.”

The audience gasped, and Marcus's mother burst into tears at the commotion.

India’s eyes glistened. Denver, her voice trembling. “Don’t listen to him. I’ve been honest with you, and the only thing I regret is not leaving Marcus sooner.  I’m not running anymore. Not from you.”

Denver’s heart pounded as he took in the scene. He never imagined his wedding day would turn out like this. He looked across the crowded room, and it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

He reached for her hand, his voice gentle. “I’m not going to let you run, not from me.”

She squeezed his hand tightly. “I trust you, and most of all, I love you, India. You don’t have to be perfect for me. I want you just the way you are.”

A tear slipped down her cheek. “I love you, Denver. I always have.”

The room waited in silence. Even though Vanessa was quiet, you could see disappointment etched into her face. Denver’s mind raced as he took in the scene. He saw Marcus, staring not at India but at him. Marcus couldn’t believe his closest friend had betrayed him. Then Denver looked at India, seeing her vulnerability, her bravery, and her flaws, but was she still acting? He couldn’t tell by the way she sincerely peered into his eyes.

Denver felt caught in a three-way trap. He took a shaky breath. “Are you sure, India?”

She nodded, tears shining in her eyes. “I’ve never been surer of anything.”

Marcus’s voice broke, raw and pleading. “Denver, don’t. Not like this.” Then he looked at India, a world of accusation in his gaze. “You could have told me.”

Denver squeezed her hand. “I believe you.” He looked at Marcus, voice thick. “I’m sorry. I truly am.”

Vanessa stepped back, upset with Marcus for leaving her to marry India, yet heartbroken that Denver was the one who got away. The guests watched, some with tears, some shocked, all completely absorbed.

The officiant, bewildered but determined, cleared his throat. “If—if you two are ready…”

India turned to Denver, her face showing both hope and fear. Denver’s heart raced. He looked at her and saw not just a friend, but a woman and an uncertain future together.

But he was a man of his word. So, he nodded, voice clear, steady. “Yes. I’m ready.”

India let out a sigh of relief. She reached up, brushed his cheek, and gave him a real, trembling smile.

The officiant found his place in the script, voice trembling slightly. “Could you two please step aside?” He pointedly asked Marcus and Vanessa as he proceeded.

“Do you, Denver, take India to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?”

Denver looked into India’s eyes. “I do.”

“And do you, India, take Denver…”

“I do,” she whispered, joy and sorrow mingling in her voice.

The officiant smiled, voice gaining strength. “By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may—”

India didn’t wait. She was devastated and hurt both of them and didn’t want to feel this pain anymore. She threw her arms around Denver and kissed him, bold and unafraid. Denver was caught off guard and unsure how to react, but he remembered they had agreed to make it look real, so he kissed her back, slowing it to something soft and passionate. It must have looked convincing, because the guests broke into stunned applause. Even Marcus, breathing heavily in shock and anger, stormed off the stage with Vanessa following.

Denver held India, and everything seemed to calm down. The chaos, heartbreak, and all the revealed and hidden truths didn’t matter now, at least for this moment.

They had chosen this fake love, despite everything. As the applause filled the room, Denver knew that whatever happened next, they would have to face it together.

  • Love, Lies, and I Do   60 - Competing With The Man Within

Marcus didn't want her to remember their last time together, which was filled with lust. He realized that this wasn’t even about making her forget Denver, but he wanted her to remember Marcus. He wanted to be different, start anew, forgetting the old Marcus. Marcus realizes he is competing with the man he used to be.His hands curled around her hips, drawing a gasp from her as he tugged her against him. “That’s no, Last chance…” She didn’t say no. She didn’t say anything as she continued to look up at him with an intrigued and impressed look in her eyes. And then Vanessa's hands landed on his bare chest, and he realized she was bringing him closer, not pushing him away. He lowered his head and moved slowly, giving her time to say no at any point. She didn’t. His lips landed on hers, and the impact was nothing short of electrifying. Marcus told himself it was because it had been so long since he’d done this, but he suspected that wasn’t entirely the case. It was her again, the sweet

  • Love, Lies, and I Do   59 - Popping The Question

Vanessa's heart raced as she waited for him to say the words every girl dreams of hearing. Then he finally said what he was thinking. “Vanessa, would you like to move in with me?” “Move in with you? Is that the question you wanted to ask me?” Marcus immediately saw the disappointment in her eyes. He knew he had screwed up. He knew Denver would never ask a girl that sort of thing.“Uhm, I didn’t mean it the way you're taking it.”“Well, how did you mean it?” Marcus' heart hammered with fear. Fear of ruining the night, the vacation, and of losing her to Denver again. So he quickly tried to repair the damage. “What I was trying to say is, would you move in with me as my wife?” “Are you trying to propose to me?” “Yes, I’m so nervous my words are getting all jumbled up.”“That's so sweet. Of course, one day I would, it would give me something to look forward to." His scent was very enticing; her eyes followed his long, lean frame and well-defined waist to his broad shoulders. Denve

The minute they entered the island club. The beautiful young lady Marcus took to the club and went to the dance floor. He followed behind her carefully. Marcus's eyes roamed over Vanessa's soft curves and full, rounded tush. She guided Marcus to the center of the dance floor when she turned to face him; her electric eyes made him motionless. She begins to dance subtly to the rhythm of the song. It was as if his attentive eyes set her ablaze. For the first time, Marcus was experiencing something very unusual: he was finding it difficult to dance. So he stood there smiling, moving his head to the beat, raising one eyebrow, as he watched her dance with cool fluidity. She wasn't just dancing her body, in any motion; he could see she really knew how to dance.Marcus seemed to be in a trance; his eyes fixed on the glow of her skin and the movement of her body. “This date is making me realize something about us.” “What is that?”“We are two people who share a special connection, and it’s not necessarily just sexual.” “Then what is it?” Vanessa asked curiously.“I’ll finish this conversation at a later time.” He said, giving her a flirtatious wink.In fifteen minutes, they arrive on the island for a night of fun. "Here, let me take your shoes off so you can walk comfortably in the sand," Marcus suggested, stooping down to remove her champagne high heels. Vanessa wore black shorts, a sexy champagne top, and her hair in big waves. Marcus was smitten by her appearance this evening as well. They walked along the beach as he

  • Love, Lies, and I Do   56 -What the Future Holds

Denver’s voice carried through the living room, calm but determined. “Here’s what I have in mind for us,” he began, his gaze lingering on India, then shifting to his parents. “India and I want a future together—one that’s happy, stable, and not weighed down by all this tension.”India squeezed his hand, drawing strength from the simple gesture. She could feel Sharon’s eyes on her, searching, hoping for some hint of what was to come. India took a breath, determined to bring some clarity.“I want to say this clearly,” India said, “I’m not pregnant. Not yet.”The room shifted. Sharon’s shoulders relaxed, visibly relieved. But the undercurrent of anxiety remained, a subtle tremor in the air. India continued, her voice gentle but firm. “Honestly, with all this division in the family, it wouldn’t be the right time to bring a child into the world.”That landed like a pebble in a pond, rippling outward. Sharon’s brow furrowed. “Are you saying this is our fault?”India met her gaze. “No one’s

  • Love, Lies, and I Do   55  - Accepting Nontraditional Marriage

Denver paused outside his parents’ front door, keys in hand, heart thumping with an anxious rhythm he hadn’t felt since high school. The autumn air was crisp, carrying the familiar scent of leaves and distant barbecue smoke, but it did little to settle his nerves. He glanced at India beside him. She offered a reassuring smile, but he could see the tension tucked at the corners of her mouth—the same tightness that had shadowed their days since that bruising Sunday dinner. He took her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. “Ready?” he asked, trying to infuse some lightness into his tone.“Ready as I’ll ever be,” she replied, her eyes shining with a mixture of hope and resignation. “Let’s do this.”The door swung open before Denver could knock. His mother stood there, hair pulled back into a tidy bun, lips pressed together in a tight line. She glanced at their intertwined hands, then stepped aside to let them in.“Hi, Mom,” Denver said, forcing a smile.“Hello, Denver. India,” Mrs. Kincaid r
