Chapter 3

Author: Minnow
“No need.”

I spoke coldly.

“I don't want the one on the floor, and I don't want anything you buy me in the future either.”

Then I strode out of the office.

But nineteen-year-old Luke suddenly rushed after me and grabbed my arm.

“Yvette, wait. Please.”

His eyes were red.

“Can we go back and get that watch? I gave it to you.”

His tone was tentative, as though he was afraid I'd be angry with him.

Looking at that handsome, familiar face, my heart softened despite myself.

“Okay.”

I looked at him.

“But this will count as your second chance. Are you sure you want to use it?”

Nineteen-year-old Luke nodded firmly without the slightest hesitation.

I reached up and ruffled his hair.

Then I turned around and headed back from the elevators.

I pushed open the office door again.

And what I saw sent nineteen-year-old Luke completely over the edge.

Megan had her arms around twenty-seven-year-old Luke, leaning close to his ear as she whispered something intimately.

The moment I walked in, they quickly pulled apart.

“Yvette, when did you become so rude?” Luke snapped. “Don't you know you're supposed to knock before entering someone else's office?”

I gave him a cool glance and walked straight toward them.

I bent down to pick up the watch.

But Megan quietly stepped on the strap.

I had no choice but to straighten again.

Megan lowered her gaze.

“Yvette, I was only trying to calm Luke down because he was so angry. Please don't misunderstand.”

The moment Megan put on that wounded act again, Luke immediately lost his temper.

“Yvette, look at yourself.”

His voice was full of disgust.

“Megan is always so thoughtful, and all you ever do is make things difficult for her. Apologize.”

I ignored him.

Keeping my eyes fixed on Megan, I forced down the anger rising inside me.

“Move your foot, please.”

Megan pretended not to hear.

“Yvette, I really didn't mean anything by it.”

Suddenly, Luke grabbed my chin.

“Apologize to Megan.”

I looked at his furious face.

Then I turned slightly toward nineteen-year-old Luke.

He stood frozen.

Tears streamed silently down his face.

The sight of him made my chest ache.

Just like that, the anger inside me disappeared.

I spoke softly.

“I'm sorry.”

---

“Oh, Yvette, you don't have to do that. Really.”

Megan carefully stepped backward.

But I clearly caught the faint smile at the corner of her mouth.

I ignored whatever Luke said next.

I bent down and picked up the watch, now battered and damaged, then turned and left the office.

On the way out of Feltel Tower, nineteen-year-old Luke cried so hard he could barely speak.

He apologized to me again and again.

I gently patted his head.

“It's okay, Luke.”

“You didn't do anything wrong.”

I looked at his handsome face and asked softly,

“Do you know what tomorrow is?”

Luke stared at me blankly.

Then he glanced at the date on the car's display.

His face suddenly flushed.

Excitement lit up his eyes.

“It's the day I'm supposed to propose to you.”

He was right.

Six years ago, on our first wedding anniversary, Luke and I had made a promise.

No matter how much or how little money we had by then, six years later, on Valentine's Day, he would propose to me again.

At the beach.

“Good memory.”

I smiled at him.

“So will you come with me tomorrow?”

Nineteen-year-old Luke looked at me, his eyes shining like stars.

For a long moment, neither of us looked away.

Then, as though he'd finally made up his mind, he told me a secret.

“Yvette, do you know why I was able to see the future?”

I shook my head.

“The night I confessed to you, I made a wish on a shooting star.”

His voice was quiet.

“I wished to see my future.

“But after seeing it, I wouldn't remember any of it.”

He paused.

“Not until midnight tomorrow night.

“That's when I'll remember everything I saw.”

I laughed until my throat hurt.“Luke, do you know what I told myself when I heard those words?”Luke stared at me blankly, hope flickering in his eyes.“What... what did you say?”I looked at the face that was almost exactly the same as the one I remembered.Only now, it was covered in carefully applied makeup.“I told myself that I never regretted meeting you.”My voice was calm.“And that I was willing to give you one final chance.”Luke's whole body trembled. His eyes lit up with sudden hope. But before he could say anything, I continued.“You already used it.”His expression froze.“You apologized to me while you were still holding Megan's hand."“And after I went home, I stayed there for two full hours before I left.”I looked at him.“Where were you?”Then I abruptly pressed the call button beside my bed. When a nurse came in, I spoke coldly.“Please have this man removed from my room. I don't want to see him again.”I handed her the recording.“And please

Still, I forced myself to hold on.Every second I could stall was another second that might increase my chances of being found. The knife plunged into my left arm again and again.Eventually, I couldn't hold it in anymore.A raw scream tore from my throat.Megan kept ordering me to beg.But there was no way I was going to give her that satisfaction.More and more wounds opened across my arm.Soon, I couldn't feel my left arm at all.My consciousness began to blur. And when I thought about how much worse she could still do to me, despair sank into my chest. Then, to my surprise, Megan suddenly threw the knife aside.“This is boring.”She clicked her tongue.“Forget it. Killing you outright makes more sense.”---My heart leaped into my throat.Megan had finally given up on torturing me.Even the burly men behind her seemed relieved.“Do it.”Megan dusted off her hands and pulled out a handkerchief to wipe them. The men stepped forward. One of them reached inside hi

I paused.“Megan, where are we?”---I kept my voice as calm as possible, afraid of provoking the woman in front of me.Megan burst out laughing.“Yvette, you're a smart woman. Can't you figure it out?”Of course I could. But right now, keeping Megan calm was my best chance of getting out of this alive. Before I could decide what to say next, one of the men beside her spoke in broken English.“Boss, hurry. Just kill her. Ski resort find out sooner or later. If something goes wrong, bad.”His words seemed to set Megan off completely.“Shut up!”She spun toward him.“I paid you this much money, and the ski resort is huge. So what if one person goes missing?”Then she whirled back toward me and slapped me hard across the face. Before I could recover, she grabbed a fistful of my hair.“Yvette, you bitch. Do you have any idea how much work it took me to get Luke?“I bent over backward for him. I washed his feet, gave him massages, treated him like a king. I even hand-washed

Still dizzy from the alcohol, Luke finally started pounding on the door.“Yvette, open up. I'm home.“Yvette, I know you're in there.“Yvette, I know I was wrong. Just open the door first.“Yvette, what more do you want from me? I already apologized!”The longer he pounded, the angrier he became.By then, even the alcohol had worn off considerably.Maybe his arms finally got tired, because he suddenly remembered his phone. It didn't take long for him to find the old message where I'd sent him the door code. But when he entered the correct combination, he sobered up instantly. The lock still flashed the same message.Incorrect code.Only then did Luke realize I'd changed it.A bad feeling hit him.He immediately called me.“Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently unavailable.”Calling didn't work.Neither did shouting. In the end, Luke actually smashed one of the villa windows and climbed inside.“Yvette, you've gone too far.”He stormed upstairs to the bedroo

I gave the two of them a brief, indifferent glance and turned to leave.Nineteen-year-old Luke was gone for good. There was no reason for me to have anything to do with either of them anymore. But before I'd taken more than a few steps, Luke's voice came from behind me.“Yvette, wait. Don't go.”Maybe it was the way he said my name, so much like the Luke I'd once loved, but I stopped.I stopped, curious to hear what else he had to say.Luke's face lit up when he saw me pause.“Yvette, I'm sorry. I forgot.”His voice was frantic.“I'll have everything set up again right away, okay?“Yvette, I was wrong. Please forgive me.”But his apology only struck me as ridiculous.Even while begging for forgiveness, he still hadn't let go of Megan's hand.Maybe he noticed where I was looking.Only then did he seem to realize it and quickly release her.Luke started to come after me.But Megan grabbed him and whispered something in his ear.His steps stopped.I didn't bother lookin

Another tear slipped down nineteen-year-old Luke's face.“So tomorrow night, he'll regret everything.”But neither of us expected twenty-seven-year-old Luke to actually show up at the beach. He just wasn't there for our promise.“Yvette, you actually followed me here?”Luke's face darkened the moment he saw me.“So now you're spying on me too. Fine. Very nice.”The beach where we'd once promised he would propose to me again was now covered in roses.Behind them, all kinds of fireworks had been set up, ready to light the sky.And standing in the middle of it all was twenty-seven-year-old Luke.Even when he saw me, he didn't let go of Megan's hand.“That's all three chances, Luke.”I whispered the words softly.Beside me, nineteen-year-old Luke desperately shook my arm.“Yvette, please. Don't.”His voice was almost pleading.“Maybe he prepared all this for you. Let's go over and see, okay?”But twenty-seven-year-old Luke's voice was ice-cold.“Yvette, get over here!”I
