*ERIC*

The conversation lingered with me well after Jamira and I had talked. I thought of all the things I’d say to Kacie and even how to make things right with Kayla again. It truly broke my heart to see all my girls feel so hurt and abandoned.

I never imagined Jamira’s pregnancy affecting everyone like this. I just want Jamira to be happy while she’s carrying life and undergoing changes. Both in her life and her body. I want Kacie to understand she’s not losing a brother, but gaining a nephew and a friend. Ultimately, I just wanted to marvel in the fact that I’m going to be a father.

Suddenly, the door flew open with Walt standing there looking like he was up to something as usual.

“Brother!”

“What do you want, Walt?”

“I want to know why you’ve been walking around here sulking. You look like you’re running on fumes.”

“Nope… just broken dreams and exasperation.”

“The baby?”

“He’s not even here yet, and it’s already drama.”

“Wanna talk about it?”

“Not here.” I said, looking over the papers on my desk.

I found myself staring at the letters but not really paying attention to them. My mind was elsewhere.

Just then, my phone lit up with the word “ mom” flashing across the screen.

“Hello?”

“Eric…”

Her voice was sweet and low. Almost tired.

“Hey, mom… what’s going on?”

“It’s your dad…”

“What’s going on?”

My heart sank, and my chest tightened a little as I asked.

“Nothing, he’s just a pain in my side as usual.”

I let out a sigh.

“Mom, don’t scare me like that, you know I worry.”

She let out a soft chuckle.

“You know that old coot can’t kick the bucket before I do. It’ll hurt too much.”

For as long as I could remember, she’d always said that. I never thought about much, but now that they’re both up in age, that saying scares me more than anything.

“Mom, you can’t play like that.”

“I’ll be fine. I was calling to invite you and that young lady you brought over to dinner again. You are still seeing her, right?”

A smile spread across my face at the mention of Jamira. The thought of her always did that to me. Now more than ever before.

“Yes, Mom, she’s still around.”

“Good. Dinner’s at eight.”

As I hung up the phone, I heard Walt’s voice again.

Damn! I’d forgotten he was even in here.

“Who was that?”

“Don’t you have work to do?”

“Yeah, and I’m doing it.”

“That was my mom. She’s having dinner at her house tonight.”

“Kacie coming?”

“She should be there.”

“That’s all I need to know,” he said as a wide smile crept across his face.

He refuses to let her breathe. That man has been chasing her for so long, I think it’s becoming a core trait for him.

I sat back in my chair, staring at the paperwork in front of me. Tonight was supposed to be dinner with my family, but all I could think about was finding the right moment to talk to Kacie without making her feel cornered.

For the rest of the day, I worked diligently to distract myself. Getting coffee in between for a small break. Walt eventually stopped by again with the latest update on the employees. It was a nice break from my thoughts.

They came flooding back when the workday was over and I had to go home.

I was greeted with a warm smile and embrace as I stepped through the door.

“Eric, what’s wrong?”

“Huh… oh, nothing, baby. How’s you and my boy?”

“He’s starting to get a little more active during the day.”

Jamira was already in her second trimester. Soon, she’ll be entering the last leg of her pregnancy, and so much still has to be done. How did time get away from me?

I went and got in the shower, hoping to rinse away some of the tension that had unintentionally built up from earlier. Once I got out, it hit me we were supposed to be getting ready to go to my mom’s house for dinner.

“Baby we gotta get ready for dinner.”

“You made plans?”

“My mom invited us.”

“Is Kacie coming?”

“I don’t know. I’ll check in a minute, but dinner’s at eight.”

It didn’t take long for me to get ready and while I waited for Jamira to finish, I went and knocked on Kacie’s door.

“Yes?”

I peeped in the door. My eyes immediately landed on the stack of boxes lined neatly against the wall.

My stomach dropped.

She wasn’t unpacking.

She was packing.

I wanted to ask if she was leaving, if she’d already made up her mind, but the words never came. I wasn’t sure I was ready for the answer.

Somehow that hurt more than it should’ve.

Kacie looked as if she’d been deep in thought all day. She’d been distant ever since the night her and Jamira exchanged words. I knew neither one meant any harm, but feelings were still collateral damage.

“You coming to dinner at mom’s house?”

She stared for a moment.

“Is Jamira coming?”

What was it with these two asking about the other? They didn’t even put that much effort into conversing with each other.

“Kace… come on.”

She let out a loud sigh. She got up as if the world itself sat on her shoulders.

My heart ached for her.

“Alright.” She said reluctantly.

I sat on the couch and waited as both of them got ready.

Soon Jamira stepped into the living room in an olive green maxi skirt that ran to the floor paired with a cream tank top that hugged her bump in the most adorable way possible.

“You look amazing.” I said never taking my eyes off of her.

The moment I saw her, everything else faded for just a second.

Olive green wrapped around her growing belly, cream against her skin…

God, she looked beautiful.

For one brief moment, I forgot about Kacie.

Forgot about the tension.

Forgot about everything except the family we were building.

She smiled and slowly walked over to me and placed her arms around my neck as she placed a soft kiss on my lips.

We waited another thirty minutes before Kacie came out.

With her hands folded she spoke softly but cold.

“I’ll take my own car.”

Not wanting to entertain her or the trap of a conversation I’d assumed she was trying set. I got up and placed a hand on Jamira’s lower back guiding her to the door.

“Have it your way.”

If giving her space was the only thing she’d accept from me right now, then that’s what I’d do. Without another word we all exited the condo on our way to my parent’s house.

*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo

*ERIC* The move was not only bittersweet, but it made the condo feel bigger in a way I hadn’t imagined possible. The commotion in the morning, the laughter, even the routine I’d gotten accustomed to were all nonexistent now. I sat on the couch watching the game when Jamira came and sat next to me. She took my hand into hers and looked at me for a while before speaking. “You know we should do something nice for Kacie.” I nodded my head not fully processing what she was saying. She didn’t press the issue. I’m glad she didn’t. She just motioned for me to lift my legs up and started massaging my feet. That did more than I expected, actually. It was like most of the tension that had been building over the months was finally starting to ease. The rest of it melted away when I got in the shower. The water ran down my body and took my troubles with it. When I got out I found Jamira had already fallen asleep. I slid in next to her, not trying to wake her up. That night

*AYANA* “Ayana, if you don’t go back in the house and change, we’re not going anywhere.” “What’s wrong with it?” “If I show you what’s wrong with it, we’ll never make it out.” I rolled my eyes at him. Whose dad is this man? For the record, it’s nothing but a little cleavage. Sometimes the titty is the outfit. I thought it was cute. I stepped out in a denim mini skirt with a corset top and a nice pair of heels. I will admit that top was a size or two too small, but that’s because I wanted that lift. Jeremy didn’t appreciate it. He’s always thinking these thirsty dudes are looking at me. I keep telling him that’s none of his concern. He just keeps insisting on telling me to change my clothes. I went inside and found a cute bodycon dress that stopped mid-thigh. It was red with black straps. I paired it with a black leather jacket and my black chunky heels. When I stepped outside, he smirked and gave his ‘nod of approval’. He opened my door and helped me into my seat. “

*CHRIS* The next day, I went into work with dinner still on my mind. I never knew my mom was in such a state. She seemed perfectly fine when she came to visit me at the hospital. She even helped me around the room during my recovery. I hadn’t known she’d been lying. Neither did I know that she lied to my dad too. I wondered what else they weren’t telling me since I left last night. That unsettling flutter in my stomach hadn’t left either. It’s safe to say I didn’t sleep. Between me trying to find Mira and worrying about my mom, I might be on the verge of losing my mind myself. I didn’t talk to my dad about it because it was already late, so I ended up leaving, but I intended to talk to him about it today. The morning rush came early, and we were all busy trying to get everyone in and out. It wasn’t until around one o’clock that I was able to get enough breathing room to go address things. I went down the hall and knocked on his door. “Come in.” I walked in and sa

  • Love On Ice   Coming Back

*CHRIS* For weeks I’ve been working to escape my own thoughts of Jamira. She really thinks I’m going to just lay down and accept the fact that she wants to leave? She has life all fucked up. The last time we spoke I made sure to let her know this wasn’t over. I intend to show her exactly what I mean. I’d been riding past her school looking for her for a week just to finally call and find out she doesn’t even work there anymore. That made my mission to find her harder, but not impossible. The following week I rode around and when I went to get some gas, I just so happened to catch her bald-headed ass friend Ayana. I made sure she didn’t notice me by sliding a little down in my seat when she exited the car. She was with a medium-built, medium-brown man with dreads and just a few inches taller than her. I wanted to throw my shoe at the back of her head. It took all of ten minutes for them to come out and get in the car. I waited another five minutes before I left. I

*ERIC* Two cars. Three people carrying the same destination. Three completely different silences. As I pulled onto the road toward my parents’ house, I couldn’t shake the feeling that dinner wasn’t going to end the way any of us hoped. I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew what I didn’t want. The tension was so thick it felt wrong walking inside someone else’s home like that. I slowly pulled into the driveway, stretching every agonizing minute. Jamira placed her hand on top of mine. I let out a deep breath that I’d been holding the entire ride over. I stopped the car and got out. As I walked over to the passenger side to let Jamira out, my heart started beating fast as my anticipation grew. I forced a smile on my face as I grabbed her hand and led her to the door. This time, we showed ourselves inside. My dad was on the couch watching football while yelling out to my mom, who was in the kitchen finishing up dinner and preparing dessert. “Kitty, your kids
