Normally when someone is staring down the barrel of a gun, they see their life flash before their eyes. Well when it was me, all I could think of was if she didn’t pull the trigger, I’d be the problem she didn’t want. At that time I didn’t know how. But as the days went by I knew what I had to do. Unfortunately I had to stick a pin in it because I still had to find Jamira and that dusty coochie ass hoe Ayana needed to pay. She thought I didn’t like her ass before. She was eventually going to see how much I despise her. Every day I’d make time to go by her house. I knew she knew my car from the last time I was there. Every time I’d go, it would be in a customer’s vehicle instead. She couldn’t catch me if she wanted to. I was careful not to look directly at the house as I passed it. Often times my eyes would just scan until something was worth stopping for. It wasn’t. I would check online to see if Jamira posted anything. She rarely did. Then I’d go to Ayana’s back up page and check. Her main page was private. The back up one was sad and full of nonsense. She even posted a status threatening to expose me. We weren’t friends on social media but she still tagged me. I responded so she knew that I saw it. I even followed a car all of twenty five minutes just to find out it wasn’t her. The driver pulled over and got out. It was no point in me getting out, so I drove off. No matter how patient I was, I still came up empty-handed. After sitting with everything I’d done so far I knew the issue wasn’t my actions… it was strategy. …. *WALT* I wasn’t prepared for things to go down the way they did when Eric was here. I wanted to tell him. Somehow I’d convinced myself that keeping Kacie in close proximity was better a long time ago. That clouded my judgment. I wanted nothing more than to be in her space. Now that she was in mine, it went to my head. I’ve texted and called Eric, but he didn’t respond. I thought if I kept at it then he’ll just give in. Even Kacie wasn’t talking to me. At least for the remainder of that day. The next day she was off and she was drinking. A lot. I wasn’t sure when that started or if I had a working memory of her drinking. By night she was so drunk she burst through my bedroom door with lust and something indescribable in her eyes. While it turned me on, I didn’t want to damage Eric’s trust even further. I tried taking her back to her room. Five minutes later she stumbled back into mine. When that didn’t work, I put things like blankets, coats, even towels on her to tire her out and make it harder for her to remove the items in her drunken state. I messed up when I tried to tuck her in. I’d been wrestling with her to get into bed safely for two whole hours. She was finally down. I pulled the covers up and she wrapped her arms around my neck and parted her lips against mine. I pulled back and saw fire in her eyes that made me lose all control over my mind and body. This was it. The moment she’d give herself to me and I’d be the happiest man I could be in that moment. Sure I would have preferred better circumstances. But in that moment, she was mine for the taking. My fingertips ran across the soft skin of her stomach. Then they trailed down to her hips and traced the outline of her panties. She pulled me closer and wrapped her legs around me. My heart pounded against my chest as common sense and the moral high ground I’d been trying to keep intact left me. One finger. Two fingers. Three and she let out a passionate moan against my ear. I took the backseat to my own desires and gave in completely. The heat at her core was more than inviting. It was a summons. One that I couldn’t resist. As she rolled her hips in waves crashing against my shore I began to moan. I pressed further against her making her scream out my name. It sounded so sweet on her lips. I wanted to live in this moment forever. She locked eyes with mine as we reached our peak together. My body locked and tensed up as I poured into her. I rolled and slammed my body next to hers. My eyes became fixated on the ceiling for several minutes. For a while, I was too afraid to get up. That would mean facing the fact I betrayed my best friend for a piece of his sister’s ass. FUCK! I can never face him again. No. That would be more suspicious. I should tell him. Be honest for once. No. This…this goes to the grave. I eventually mustered the courage to slip out of her room and back into my own. I got in the shower hoping to wash away every ounce of regret and guilt off that came from the moment I thought I’d wanted since I was a teenager. Eventually the water became cold and I got out feeling the same. Like I’d broken some super sacred oath. That night I stirred. Sleep never came. The next morning was worse. I made breakfast alone. Normally she’d join me. I figured she was still hungover. That theory was thrown out the window when I overheard her talking to a friend about it. She remembered. Every detail. That made the hole in my heart much bigger. When I watched shows we’d watch together, she would sit on the opposite end of the couch silently staring at her phone. When I asked questions, she’d respond with gestures and short answers. I wanted to talk about it, but just when I would approach her, she would either walk off or turn her head away from me. I didn’t know which was worse. The storm that would eventually become Eric when he finds out or that she’s actively ignoring me.*JAMIRA* “Promise you’ll make uncle come back to get me,” Kayla said as she hugged me. I knelt down as far as I could go. “I pinky promise.” We interlocked our pinkies and kissed our thumbs before she turned around to leave. I went back to the stove to clean up the mess we’d made while baking cookies. Ayana took a cookie and began eating it. She watched me for about half a second before she came with her own observations. “Okay so…girl what the fuck?” “Ayana, please.” “No, girl that man is on something. Our white knight on a horse is dealing with some real shit.” “I heard,” I said as I walked the dishes over to the sink. “I think you need to go in there and investigate.” I looked up from the sink to see Eric walk into his room and softly shut the door. He looked deep in thought as he always did these days. “Or I could just respect the man’s privacy.” “Mira, look at me.” I shook my head. Not because I didn’t want to look at her. Because I
*ERIC* “Mimi, please don’t make me go,” Kayla pleaded while tugging on Jamira’s wrist. Jamira looked back at me with those dazzling, big, brown eyes of hers. I looked away because I knew I’d give in if I didn’t. “Come on, Eric, what’s one more day?” “She’s not mine to do that with.” “Didn’t you take her without permission?” “That’s not the point. Kacie already said she was coming to get her.” Jamira turned to Kayla and held her cheek. “Sorry, little one, I tried.” They both looked like two sad ass puppies who never found their forever homes. “Come put your shoes on, sour patch.” Kayla pouted as she reluctantly put her shoes on. “It’s okay. I promise I’ll come and get you again.” She gave a half smile and sulked all the way to the couch to wait. I went and gathered her things, making sure she left with everything she came with. I’ve never seen her so sad. And yet, it was nothing I could do. That cut deeper than any knife could. At the last
*CHRIS* “When are you coming back?” “When I get off break.” “You left two hours ago, we’re getting backed up.” “Carlos, chill. I’ll be back in a few.” “Hours or minutes?” “Why?” “Unless you want to get sued or reported, I’d come back. The customer has been asking for their car and I can’t keep misleading them.” “Just tell them I went to get some more parts.” “I—“ I quickly hung up the phone. The longer I stayed on the phone, the more I risked getting caught. I followed a car because I mistakenly thought it belonged to Ayana’s triflin’ ass. I told myself I wouldn’t make that same mistake again. This time, during lunch I rode past her house again. She and Jamira were really making this shit hard for me. I hadn’t seen either of them or their vehicles since that night. I decided that if this was going to work, I needed to not only get creative, I needed to think this through. Which meant even if she hadn’t shown up yet, she’d come back. And when she did, I’d

*ERIC* “Kacie… I thought you weren’t going to be back until late tonight,” he said barely above a whisper. She held my gaze as she responded to Walt. “They sent me home early.” “Answer the question Kacie.” She fumbled to put the keys in her pocket. “What Eric? What?” “Why the fuck do you have a key to Walt’s house, Kacie?” “Why do you think Eric?” Suddenly everything started to fall into place. The shoes, the purse, the blanket. My mind wasn’t playing tricks on me. I knew those items. “You said you found an apartment. Why did you lie?” “Eric, I—“ “We wanted to tell you.” At that point every bone in me wanted to grab him by the throat and sling him across the room. My fists balled at my sides. “SHUT THE FUCK UP WALT! We’ve been friends for years and I don’t even have a key. She sells you a sob story and you give her one? You don’t even know her!” “He knows enough.” “Oh yeah? Does he know why you’re really here and what you’re going to do as soon as Jos
*KAYLA* “No more chicken fingers for you, Mr. Jingles.” “Is that what you named your shark?” “Mmhmm.” “Well how about we sit Mr. Jingles on the couch so he doesn’t get a tummy ache after eating all of that food.” “Mr. Jingles, Ms. Hines says you have to take a nap.” I put my shark on the couch and put the blanket on him. Ms. Hines made me chicken fingers. They were yummy. I like her food. Mommy can’t cook like that. After I ate all my food, Ms. Hines let me paint her belly. She said she didn’t have any paper, so she told me to pretend she was. She gave me pretty colors like pink, green, and sparkly yellow. “Ooh, that tickles, Kayla.” “Sorry. Mommy never lets me have this much fun. She says I’m messy, but I like being with you and uncle. Y’all are nice to me and play with me.” “I’m sure Mommy is nice to you too. Maybe she’s just busy.” “Nope. Mommy and uncle are mad at each other. They were really loud. It scared me. He told me to come with him and you.” “T
