LOGIN*JAMIRA*
It had been about three weeks since I had been at Ayana’s house, and I had thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. However, I still occasionally missed my own home. It was simply a comforting thought, knowing that my belongings were there. My wounds had healed, and even my back had finally scabbed up, allowing me to jump into the shower without any pain. I was so excited that I could go back to wearing short sleeves and strapless tops that I had almost forgotten that it wasn’t summer, and the weather was barely warm outside. I had also helped Ayana with her mother, and they were both grateful for my assistance. As a result, I had even gotten closer to her mother. We had engaged in conversations about various topics, and we had even discovered a show that we both enjoyed watching together. It was a show about a lawyer who suffers from short-term memory loss but manages to continue working and often forgets the people in her personal life, yet she still manages to win her cases. It was quite amusing. At this point, I had picked up a brush and started brushing her mother’s hair out of habit, when she began to question me. “So, what’s your plan?” she asked. “What do you mean?” I replied. “What are you going to do about your personal life?” she pressed. “I suppose I haven’t given it much thought,” I admitted. “You know you must have a plan. Don’t be out here making poor decisions,” she advised. At the time, her words seemed a bit cryptic, but I suppose they would eventually make more sense. Just then, my phone rang. The caller ID displayed Saint Simon’s Regional Hospital. I jumped up and excused myself. “Hello?” I asked nervously. “Hi, this is Dr. Ruth from Saint Simon’s Hospital. I’m looking for Jamira Hines,” she said. “I’m speaking,” I replied, trying to sound more composed. “Ah, I’m calling to inform you that Chris Kenneth is here and has you listed as an emergency contact. We require your consent to perform surgery on him and sign some paperwork.” “Um, okay, what happened?” I asked, feeling a sense of unease. “I’ll explain everything to you in person,” she assured me. “Okay, I’m on my way,” I said, feeling a sinking sensation in my stomach. I quickly ran to get a jacket and some shoes and dashed for the door. “Is everything alright?” Ayana’s mom asked, her face filled with concern. “Yeah, I have to go to the hospital,” I replied. I drove frantically to the hospital, scared to find out what was wrong, but also wondering why I was his emergency contact. His mom was alive and well, so why hadn’t she been called? I parked crooked as hell, trying to save time. Every second was precious. I ran into the building and went straight to the front desk. “Hey, I’m looking for Dr. Ruth,” I said. “Yes, I’ll page her right now,” the receptionist replied. She called for Dr. Ruth, and a few moments later, a tall, red-haired woman with freckles and glasses came in. Her expression was as if she was deep in thought about how to tell me what she needed to say. “Jamira?” she asked. “Yes,” I replied. “Chris was just admitted to the hospital right before we called you. He has really bad bruising and severe, deep wounds. We managed to stop some of the bleeding, but we believe he has internal bleeding and damage, and we needed to let the next of kin know,” she explained. My ears began to ring, and I stood there, stunned, not knowing what to do. Suddenly, the doctor’s voice broke through my thoughts, and I remembered where I was. “Yes, yes, whatever you need to do to save his life, please do it,” I said. She put her hand on my shoulder and said, “Thank you. We’ll let you know when we’re finished and able to let you see him.” I nodded and took a seat in the waiting room. So many thoughts went through my head. What had happened? Was he going to be okay? Who had hurt him? I had been there for about ten minutes before it struck me to call his mom. “Hello?” She answered. The voice on the phone sounded both tired and confused. “Hey, Mrs. Kenneth. This is Jamira. Chris is down here at Saint Simons Hospital,” I said. “Oh my God. I’m coming,” she said, her voice laced with panic. I waited there for almost an hour before she came bursting through the door. She was a short mahogany woman with salt and pepper hair that stopped and her shoulders in waves. She had deep set crows feet around her eyes and smile lines in her face. Each one telling a story to those willing to listen. She took my hands into hers when she spotted me and walked over. She was always so kind and gentle. I liked that most about her. “Thank you for calling me. I know you and Chris aren’t on the best of terms right now, but it means a lot that you’re here.” “Anytime.” I said flatly. We both sat there in anticipation waiting for the moment the doors would fly open and someone would let us know what happened. We both were too worried to speak so we just sat there with thick silence between us. Both hoping the worst would never come. Eventually she got up to go get us some coffee and snacks. We sat there with overwhelming emotion of sadness and worry. Every conversation I’d had about Chris up until this point replayed in my mind. Even what Ayana’s mom said about having a plan. I was unraveling by the second.*AYANA* After a long day of taking X-rays, smelling breath, and passing out spit cups, I was ready to go home and sit my ass in some water with a nice glass of wine while I debate on what to do about my personal life. The last patient for the day just left, leaving me and Trish to lock up. After cleaning the office and the bathrooms, we set out unopened instruments for the next day. Trish was cool, but it was always this unchecked, uneasy energy about her. It was the kind that made you look back during a trust fall. Honestly I wouldn’t trust her ass to get me a cup of water. One time I was helping out at the front desk and this eerie feeling of someone watching me kept coming back out of nowhere. When scanning the room, she just stood there staring. Her gaze was unyielding and unsettling. She wanted me to see her, see me. I can’t get with that. Another time she had switched lunch times with me and when the boss came yelling at me, she just sat there and told this man that
*CHRIS* I’ve been calling Mira a lot lately. After the conversation with my dad, I realized that I had to get her back. It’s not like I was going to let her go without a fight to begin with, but something about his words that really hit hard for me. ‘When you have a good girl, you do everything you can to keep ‘em.’ That’s all I could think about. Don’t get me wrong it’s not like I wanted to. Deep down, I knew this was my fault. Had I kept it in my pants I’m sure we’d still be in the townhouse together. But also, had it not been for that crunchy bitch Ayana, she would’ve never met that motherfucker at the club. I still want to know what he said to get her attention. She didn’t come back home with me until about four months into us dating. One night is all it took for this bastard to get in her panties. I couldn’t tell you what pissed me off more. The fact that it was sudden, the fact that she actually likes him, the fact that she kept going back, or the fact that she’s actuall
*ERIC* After Jamira showed up, I can’t lie, I felt better about all the stuff that’s been going on lately. She stayed a while to talk and help with filing a few things for me. I actually like having her here. She’s really helpful. After going through a few cases and finishing up on two of them, I decided I needed a break. I went to go to Walt’s office. Once I got to the door, Dina, yet again was all in Walt’s face. She was sitting on the armrest of his chair with her hand on his chest. Seriously, what do these two do all day? “Dina, leave!” She hesitated and looked between us before running out of his office. Walt threw his hands up and grunted. “Why?” “Dina’s not worth the distraction.” Walt just stared at me a few seconds before returning back to work. “Hey, so I was wondering how Kacie was settling into her new place?” He paused. “Wouldn’t know anything about it.” “How was she when you helped her move the last of it?” “Fine.” “I called and she tri
*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo
*ERIC* The move was not only bittersweet, but it made the condo feel bigger in a way I hadn’t imagined possible. The commotion in the morning, the laughter, even the routine I’d gotten accustomed to were all nonexistent now. I sat on the couch watching the game when Jamira came and sat next to me. She took my hand into hers and looked at me for a while before speaking. “You know we should do something nice for Kacie.” I nodded my head not fully processing what she was saying. She didn’t press the issue. I’m glad she didn’t. She just motioned for me to lift my legs up and started massaging my feet. That did more than I expected, actually. It was like most of the tension that had been building over the months was finally starting to ease. The rest of it melted away when I got in the shower. The water ran down my body and took my troubles with it. When I got out I found Jamira had already fallen asleep. I slid in next to her, not trying to wake her up. That night
*AYANA* “Ayana, if you don’t go back in the house and change, we’re not going anywhere.” “What’s wrong with it?” “If I show you what’s wrong with it, we’ll never make it out.” I rolled my eyes at him. Whose dad is this man? For the record, it’s nothing but a little cleavage. Sometimes the titty is the outfit. I thought it was cute. I stepped out in a denim mini skirt with a corset top and a nice pair of heels. I will admit that top was a size or two too small, but that’s because I wanted that lift. Jeremy didn’t appreciate it. He’s always thinking these thirsty dudes are looking at me. I keep telling him that’s none of his concern. He just keeps insisting on telling me to change my clothes. I went inside and found a cute bodycon dress that stopped mid-thigh. It was red with black straps. I paired it with a black leather jacket and my black chunky heels. When I stepped outside, he smirked and gave his ‘nod of approval’. He opened my door and helped me into my seat. “
