INICIAR SESIÓNI get up early in the morning and leave for work. I’m glad that I do. It gives me a chance to avoid Tanya. We haven’t talked since her little comment when we were getting out of the elevator. It didn’t make me mad. I just don’t know what to say about it.
I step into my office before Karen arrives for work. My cell phone rings as I get ready for the day. I pull it out of my shirt pocket and see that the number says "unknown." I answer it anyway.
“Hello.”
“Memories can kill. Maybe it’s better that she doesn’t remember.” A voice says over the phone.
“Who is this?”
There’s no answer, the line goes dead. I hang up the phone and stare at it as if that’s going to make the number appear, or the caller call back. Then it hits me that I'd better call Mikey. I dial his number.
“What’s up, Bryce?”
“I got a strange call.”
“And?”
“And the caller told me that maybe it’s better that Tanya doesn’t remember because memories can kill.”
“Did you recognize the voice?”
“No.”
“Did a number appear?”
“No.”
“Shit.”
“What’s the matter?”
“I was hoping that your caller wasn’t smart enough to use a burner phone. That might make it untraceable. Has Tanya remembered anything?”
“Not since yesterday, Mikey.”
“Look, I understand that the other doctors think that it’s okay not to tell her anything, but I don’t agree. She seems to be in danger, and she needs to know that.”
“You may be right, but we can’t tell her everything. If her brain is blocking out information, then it’s not ready to handle it.”
“Are you sure you’re worried about her brain or you when she remembers?”
“Both.”
“Secrets are never good.”
“I understand, but I just don’t think she will be able to deal with everything.”
“Okay, I get it, but we should at least explain to her that she’s in danger. I told her that she was hit by a car.”
“But you didn’t tell her everything.”
“Of course, I didn’t tell her everything, but we need to explain that the car hit her on purpose.”
“At least you think it did.”
“Whatever. She needs to know.”
“Fine. I’ll tell her tonight.”
“I think I should be there, Bryce.”
“Why Mikey?”
“Because I have a feeling, she’s going to have questions for a cop, and if she remembers anything important, then I want to know about it right away.”
“Fine, come over for dinner.” That’s the last thing I say to my brother before hanging up.
Tanya
I wake up and realize that it’s late in the day. Well, it’s not that late in the day. It’s noon time. I get up and shower. After that, I towel off and lotion my body with the shea butter and coconut butter lotion that Bryce brought me. I walk over to the drawer that has panties and bras in it. I pull out a brown lace set. I'm surprised when I put them on that they fit.
I then walk over to the closest and pull out a pair of blue jeans and a t-shirt that fits. Everything fits like a glove as I finish dressing, a knock sounds at the door. “Come in.”
In walks Rita with something in her hand. “I’m not sure if you were looking for something in the mail, but you received something.”
“Me. That’s funny. I don’t know anyone, and no one knows that I’m here.”
“Someone does,” Rita states as she hands me the envelope. “Are you ready for lunch?”
“Sure. If you don’t mind.”
“I don’t mind at all. Come down when you're finished.” Rita turns to leave but stops. She turns back to face me. “I almost forgot Mr. Clark wanted to let you know that he has someone coming over to help you with your hair.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“Okay. Thank you.”
When Rita steps out of the room, I open the envelope. I check the front and see who it’s addressed to first. It was just my first name and the address, so I tore into it. When I look at it, I wish I hadn’t.
“YOU CAN’T TRUST HIM OR YOUR MEMORIES.”
The statement is spelled out in cut-out letters. I drop the letter to the floor. The first letter scared me, but this one scares me more because now it’s telling me that I can’t trust my memory. If I can’t trust that or Bryce, then what can I trust? Who the hell is sending me these letters? I pick the letter off the floor and place it in the drawer next to the bed.
I walk into the precinct and make a beeline for the Captain’s office. I open the door without knocking and stick my head in. “You got a minute, Capt.?”“I might as well, since you don’t know how to act.”I enter the office and take a seat. “I need a favor.”“What’s that, Clark?”“I need a warrant for a C.I. to wear a wire.”“Excuse me.”“I found out why Josh McCall was murdered.”“You want to fill me in.”“He was supplying Dr. Ward with drugs for sale.”“You’re trying to tell me a first-class doctor would risk his career to become a drug dealer? Do you know where the drugs are going?”“No, but I believe I can find out if you allow me to get the warrant.”“And what am I supposed to use as probable cause?”“Two witnesses.”“Who?”“I would rather not say until we have this wrapped, but they are willing to testify.”“And this will wrap up the death case of Josh McCall and take a drug dealer’s supply off the street. Am I right?”“Yes.”“I can’t promise anything, but let me see what I can d
“Sir I think we have a problem.”“What’s the problem, Cece?”“I believe we have a car following us.”Tanya and I turn around in our seats to look out the rear window. Behind us is a dark blue car. “Oh my God, that’s the car that hit B.J. and me.”“Are you sure?”“I am more than sure. It looks like the same guy that’s driving.”“Did you guys hear that?” I ask Cece and Chris.“Roger that sir,” Chris answers back. Then I feel the car take a sharp left and then a sharp right. Tanya and I watch as the car follow us. Then before we knew it, we were behind the car that was following us. “Stay in the car.” Chris and Cece yell as they jump out with their guns drawn on the man driving the dark blue car.Tanya and I watch from the inside of our car as they move in. Chris pulls the guy out of the car and slams him up against it. Chris pulls handcuffs from behind his back while Cece calls the cops. Tanya and I stay in the car until the cops appear.Once they arrive, we step out of the car and walk
My burner phone rings, and I pick it up right away. “Hello.”“What the hell were you thinking?”“What do you mean?”“I mean, what were you thinking when you gave that fool a hotshot?”“I thought you told me to take care of things.”“Did you stop and think before you acted?”“Of course, I did.”“Then that means you are a dumbass because you fucked things up more than fixed them. See, here’s the problem: you brought the cops around even more. Second, who the hell is going to help us get our product? Those are two major problems.”“What did you expect me to do?”“I don’t know. Maybe lean on Josh.”“Threatening him didn’t work anymore.”“So instead of telling me this, you kill him, which brings more heat on us and fucks up my operation.”“The cops won’t find anything.”“And what about those two bitches?”“They are staying quiet.”“If that changes, I'd better be the first call. That Tanya bitch I can handle. As for now, you'd better get someone to replace that dude you killed.” The line go
The night approached quickly, and it was time to say goodnight. We all stepped on the elevator together, but Bryce and I got off on the second floor.Bryce walks toward the master suite, and I follow behind him. He stands at the door and looks at me. “You’re coming in here?” Bryce asks me in a shocked voice.“I am your wife. Is there a problem with me sleeping in here with you?”“No. Not at all. I’m just a little shocked, that’s all.”“Well, stop being shocked and open the door to our bedroom.”Bryce wastes no time doing what I ask him. When we entered the room, that’s when I remembered I didn’t have anything in that room. “I’m sorry, I had all your things moved to the guest room. We’ll have them moved back tomorrow.”“That’s fine. I’ll be back.” I walk out of the room and into what has been my room. I open the drawer and pull out a white silk nightgown. I put it on and walk back into the bedroom with Bryce. When I enter, he is already under the covers, so I walk over to the other si
As Katherine goes to the second floor to be with Tanya, I’m left on the first floor with Tanya’s father, Terrance, her brother Tyrone, and Mikey, who arrived after settling Karen down. As soon as his mother is out of sight, Tyrone jumps up out of his seat and into my face. “What the fuck is your problem not telling us that my sister was awake?”I jump out of my seat as well. “I did what I thought was best.”“And who the fuck are you?”“I’m her fucking husband.”“You think that gives you the right to treat us as if we’re not her family? I should beat your ass, white boy.”I step to Tyrone. “I believe we tried that before, and you ended up on your ass.”“If that’s what you think, then let’s step outside.”“Not a problem, but when this white boy whoops your ass again, don’t come crying like no bitch.”“Cut this shit out,” Terrance yells. “Look, Bryce, we have always had a good relationship. We have always been family. It hurt when you treated us as if we were nobodies.”“I understand, Te
A week passes, and the same thing happens day in and day out. I watch as Tanya lies in our son’s bed holding on to his teddy bear. She doesn’t get out of bed unless she needs to use the restroom. She doesn’t even bother to take a shower.I had to send Bree back home with my parents because Tanya wouldn’t respond to her whenever she tried to talk to her. I have no idea what to do.I’m downstairs having a beer with Mikey, trying to relieve some stress. “What are you going to do?” Mikey asks me before taking a sip of his beer.“There’s only one choice to make, and that’s to call Katherine and Terrance.”“You know they are going to kill you, right?”“I know, but I did what I thought was best.”“That may be, but you have to think about it from their side of things. I mean, think about if it was Bree. Imagine Bree was in a coma for a year and wakes up, and her husband doesn’t call you to let you know that she’s awake.”“I get it,” I say one more time before slamming my beer down in anger. “
I’m at the kitchen table when I hear the front door open. I stand from the table and am greeted by a tall, dark brown-haired woman with blue-green eyes, and I know right away that she must be Bryce’s mother.I walk toward her and extend my hand. “Hello, I’m Tanya. You must be Bryce’s mother.”She e
I wake up in bed by myself. I look around and don’t see Bryce anywhere in sight, so I climb out of bed and put on a robe. I step out of my room and walk around looking for Bryce. As I walk down the hall, I hear his voice as I near his room.I walk until I get to his door. His door is jarred, and I
I walk into my office and lock the door. I pull out my burner phone and dial the only number that’s in it. The other line answers after two rings. “This better be good.”“We have a problem.”“What problem is that?”“The cops are all over the hospital?”“And?”“What if they stumble onto Josh?”“Then
A rattling noise wakes me from my slumber. I look around the room to see where the noise is coming from. Then it dawns on me that my cell phone is rattling against the nightstand. I pick it up without checking it. “Hello.”“Where the hell are you, Bryce?”“Mikey?”“Yes, now that we know who I am, y
