Chapter 5

Author: Rainy Eve
Caelum refused to believe Nancy had hurt me and dismissed the whole incident.

"The production team invited me to appear on a variety show as Nancy's boyfriend. What do you think?" Caelum asked as he sat beside me, his tone deliberately casual.

Another sharp pain tore through my stomach. I had no desire to speak to him. "Sounds great. No complaints from me."

His hand froze halfway through turning a page.

My continued indifference finally pushed his long-simmering frustration to the breaking point.

He pinned me against the sofa, his eyes bloodshot with rage, and shouted as if he were on the verge of losing control, "Annette! Do you really not care at all? What the hell do you want from me? How long are you going to keep this up? Do you want me to beg for your forgiveness? Do you want me on my knees?"

I lowered my eyes and swallowed back the blood that rose in my throat. "Isn't this exactly what you wanted from me?"

Caelum ignored my attempts to struggle free. He tore open my clothes and pressed one kiss after another along my neck.

"Are you going to force yourself on me?" I asked flatly.

He went rigid.

After a long silence, he forced the words through gritted teeth. "Annette, for every ounce of pain you put me through, I'll make you suffer ten times as much! If that's how you want it, we'll just keep tearing each other apart until we're both dead!"

He released me and stormed out.

The moment he was gone, I could no longer hold back the blood that surged up my throat. I broke into a violent cough and spat out a mouthful of blood.

Caelum stopped in the doorway. He stood motionless for a long time but never once looked back.

…

I hadn't expected his retaliation to come so quickly. The painting in my studio vanished, and shortly afterward,

Nancy posted an update on her social media feed.

Nancy: [All I had to do was ask, and he handed it right over.]

My chest heaved as blood rose in my throat. I squeezed my eyes shut several times, desperate to steady myself.

…

When I rushed to Nancy's place, I found the two of them in bed together, barely dressed.

But what truly shattered me was what lay beneath them. It was the portrait I had painted of my mother.

Caelum shoved Nancy aside without a second thought, sat up, and lit a cigarette. "What now? Have you finally come to your senses and decided to admit you were wrong?"

I stared at the filthy, ruined painting. My nails dug deep into my palms, and I clenched my jaw so tightly that my teeth ground together.

"Cael said your hand is useless now anyway. Since you can't sell your paintings anymore, he figured he might as well give this one to me." Nancy flashed me a taunting smile. "I sent the rug out for cleaning, so I thought I'd use this to cover the mattress instead. You don't mind, do you?"

A wave of fury consumed me, overwhelming every last shred of reason. I snatched up a nearby vase and smashed it against Nancy's head without hesitation. "Die!"

Nancy screamed.

Caelum lunged forward and seized my arm. "Are you out of your fucking mind?"

"Caelum, you deserve to die too! Why don't you both just drop dead?" I screamed through my tears and sank my teeth into his arm with all my strength.

He froze. Then he came to his senses, seized my face in a bruising grip, and roared at me, "You're cursing me to die over a fucking painting?"

Beneath his fury, I could hear something that sounded almost like hurt.

His words abruptly caught in his throat. His voice seemed to drift farther and farther away.

A red haze clouded my vision. I had coughed up blood again, and this time, it splattered across his face.

The room spun around me, and I collapsed into Caelum's arms.

His voice reached me in broken fragments, as faint and distant as if I were drowning. "Annette! Annie… what's wrong… with you?"

His face was a picture of panic and confusion.

All at once, I felt unbearably tired. "Caelum, we don't have to keep tearing each other apart anymore. I'm dying."

His expression went completely blank. Before he could even comprehend my words, hot tears had already begun to fall onto my face.

I lay in the hospital bed with a breathing tube in place, scrolling through the comments online.Part of me wanted to know what everyone thought, too. Did the rest of the world see me as nothing more than a pathetic joke?[God, this is brutal. This woman has been through hell. I actually feel sick reading this.][Anyone else think she's partly to blame for falling for a guy like this? It's not entirely her fault, but come on. The man already betrayed her once, and she still remarried him.][That's not fair, though. She's genuinely been through so much. More than 20 years together, all that shared history. That's not something you can just walk away from. And it sounds like she doesn't even have any family or friends left.][I came here for the tea on the actress who was the mistress, so why am I crying over the wife's story instead...][Both of them deserve to rot.]Someone took the phone from my hands, and I looked up to find Caelum's exhausted face hovering over me.Our eyes

I admitted it. What I felt for Caelum had never been healthy. In my short life, all the love I knew during my first 17 years came from two people: my mother and Caelum. After my mother died, Caelum was all I had left. I had loved him. I had hated him. And now, as my life drew to an end, he was still the only person I could think of.The year I turned 17, my mother died, and that bastard of a father threw me out of the house. Caelum took me in and gave me a place to stay at the Pemberton home. That was when he confessed his feelings for me.From that day forward, I created a Instagram account and began documenting our relationship And now, Caelum was reading it, one post at a time.…Today was the anniversary of my mother's death. Caelum skipped class to take me to visit her grave.A light rain began to fall. We took shelter beneath the eaves, but the wind kept blowing the rain toward us.He stepped in front of me to shield me from it.I asked him what he was doing. He said he w

I saw the unfinished painting again.Caelum brought it to me himself. Every trace of filth had been removed, and it looked exactly as it had before."Annie, I didn't realize how much this painting meant to you. I thought it was just an ordinary painting. I'm sorry… But look, I've already had someone restore it. It's exactly the way it was before...""How did you manage that?" I asked.Caelum seemed unaware of the dark red stain that had begun to seep through the back of his black suit jacket. He gave me a deliberately casual smile. "I just hired a specialist. It was nothing. Don't worry about it."I knew exactly which specialist he meant. She was a renowned restoration expert who had never failed to restore a painting. But she had one peculiar rule. If a painting had suffered accidental damage, she would restore it free of charge. However, if someone had deliberately damaged it, whoever sought her help had to endure 10 lashes from her first, each one severe enough to split the s

Caelum, a workaholic who had never missed a day at the office, stopped going to work altogether and stayed by my side at the hospital around the clock. He remembered how much I used to love the vegetable soup he made. He carefully took it out of the insulated container and held it out to me. "Annie, please try some..."I didn't move, and I made no effort to hide the disgust on my face. "Can you just get out?"He swallowed hard and forced a smile, his voice even more pleading than before. "The doctor said you need to eat something. How about some soup? You used to love it, remember? Just a little, please..."I took the bowl and dumped the scalding soup straight over his head. The thick liquid streamed through his hair and soaked into his expensive coat. Wherever it touched his skin, angry red patches appeared almost instantly. His brow furrowed, and the veins on the back of his hand bulged, but he didn't pull away. When he spoke, his voice was as rough as gravel. The smell of disinfectant hung heavy in the air.I opened my eyes to a blinding white ceiling. When I turned my head, I found Caelum staring at me with bloodshot eyes."Annie, you're awake..." He gripped my hand tightly, as though he feared I might slip away at any moment. My body felt strangely light. The constant stomach pain and ringing in my ears had vanished.I realized this might be the brief calm before the end, and the words escaped before I could stop them. "I'm dying, aren't I..."Caelum was already in tears. He shook his head, his voice choked with emotion. "No. No, you're not… Annie, you're not going to die. We'll go abroad. Medicine has advanced so much. I'll get you the treatment you need. I'll find a way to cure you, I swear..."I pulled my hand free and looked him straight in the eye. When I spoke, I chose every word with the deliberate intention of hurting him.
