LOGINCHAPTER 3
ALEX POV The door swings open just as our lips touch. "Alex, the samples just arrived and… oh shit." Theo freezes in the doorway, his eyes going wide. The folder in his hands slips, papers spilling on the floor. Ellis shoves me hard enough that I stumble back. His face goes pale as he moves to the other side of the table, putting distance between us. "I'll just... I'm going... sorry..." Theo stutters, turning deep red as he quickly gathers the papers. "Theo, wait," Ellis calls out after him but he's already out, the door closing behind him. Ellis won't look at me,he just stares at the table gripping it tightly. Then he suddenly starts laughing. "Ellis…" "Don't." his voice crack. "Please don't." I take a step toward him and he flinches. "We need to talk about this.Theo just walked in on us." I run my hand through my hair."I will talk to him,he won't say anything. "You don't know that!" His voice rises. "Three years, Alex. Three years fixing what you broke, you called me a mistake once." He rubs his eyes angrily. "And I'm right back here letting you ruin me again." "That's not what happened." I swallow hard "Isn't it?" Came his reply as he pulls at his hair the neat bun almost coming loose. "One conversation and I'm right back here. Weak and pathetic. How do I stop these feelings..hmn?" His voice breaks and he stops, pressing his palms against his eyes. I want to go to him. Pull him close and tell him he's wrong, tell him that none of it is true. But the way he's standing there, arms wrapped around himself like he's barely holding it together, I know he won't let me close. I open my mouth but nothing comes out. How do I explain the selfish reasons that made me push him away with those words? Ellis watches me struggle with my words, waiting for me to say something. "Right." He turns away cold. "I'm not proceeding with this contract." "What? No." I step in front of him. "You can't." "Ellis, please." My voice cracks. "We both need this project. I need it as much as you do too,I can remove myself from the project and let Maya take the lead. You won't have to see me or work with me directly." "You think that makes it better?" His jaw clenches. "Get out of my way." "Not until you listen to me." I replied For a moment I think he might actually try to push past me. Instead he goes very still, his eyes searching my face for something. "Why do you care? You made it clear that I didn't matter." "I was wrong." "No, you were honest," he says with a shrug. "Maybe for the first time, I'm being honest so that I can see the reality of it. I can't do this. I can't work with you and pretend that night didn't happen. That you didn't break something in me that I haven't been able to fix." "Please move." His voice drops to barely a whisper. "I'm asking nicely." What else can I do?, I step aside and he walks past me to the door, his shoulder brushing mine. The brief contact makes my skin tingle with fear and want. Then he's gone. I stand there, still feeling his lips on mine, and realize I've ruined this again. Ten minutes pass and I'm about to call Maya to cancel when the door opens. Ellis walks back in, his face blank, followed by his team and Maya. He doesn't look at me as he takes a seat across from me this time. Maya shoots me a questioning look but I shake my head slightly. The meeting continues like nothing happened with curious eyes glancing between us once in a while. Ellis talks about the project professionally while others take notes. He doesn't look at me once. I should be listening and following up too but I can't stop watching his hand drift to his lips as he touches them deep in thought. I know how those lips taste. Know the sound he made when I.. "Mr. Hawthorne?" Maya's voice cuts through. "Yes.sorry..that's fine" I have no idea what she's even talking about. Ellis is already standing when I blink, halfway to the door and his team follows leaving behind the faint smell of his cologne. Someone knocks on my office door a few minutes later. "Come in." Theo enters, closing the door behind him. "Did you forget something?" I asked confused "No... look, about earlier..." "You didn't see anything," I say firmly. "Right, exactly I didn't see anything." He shifts "Not that I saw anything. But if I had seen something which I'm not saying I did,I wouldn't have told anyone,Just so you know." I look at him for a moment. Theo's been Ellis' manager for three years. He probably knows more than he's saying.I doubt he's one for gossip. "Thank you" "Is he... I mean, are you now..." He trails off awkwardly. "It's complicated." "Yeah, I got that impression." He fidgets with his sleeves before speaking again "For what it's worth, he looked pretty upset when he left,Like really upset." I don't need the reminder, but somehow hearing it makes it worse. "I know." He hesitates, like he's not sure he should ask. But I can hear the genuine concern in his voice and a little bit of curiosity.“ I mean, I saw you together at the Milan Fashion Week three years ago. You two looked... close and now this …" “I screwed it up pretty bad I guess." I admit, the words coming out quietly. "Theo nods slowly. "And now you're working together" "For the next three months." I say He winces. "That's rough, man." His words almost make me laugh. "You have no idea." After Theo leaves,I work for five hours straight without break. My hand's reach for the intercom to order a drink when my phone rings, displaying an unknown number. Thinking it may be a spam call I left it to ring again before picking. "Hello?" I answer I hear heavy breathing on the other end then Ellis's voice. "Meet me tonight at Neon Bar, South Square by eight pm." His voice drops to barely a whisper. "If you make me wait this time Alex, consider the contract gone."CHAPTER TENALEX POVThe sun sets outside while I sit still at my desk working. The office is quiet since everyone must have gone home hours ago, tired too.The stock closed at eighty four, down eight percent in one day.I have gone over the numbers more than ten times today, weighing every suggestion and still, nothing feels right. My mind drifts back to yesterday’s interview. Every word had been carefully crafted by the PR team. They protected the company, but they still feel off and I can’t shake this feeling off.A knock at the door makes jolt be back.My mother stands in the doorway dolled up in a blue designer button down gown, purse over one arm and a paper bag dangling from the other hand.“How did you even find your way up here?” I ask, a little taken aback. Mom has never been great with directions.I half expected her to get lost before she made it this far."The security man helps me." She wa
CHAPTER NINE ALEX POV I was a few minutes away from Velles when the traffic stopped completely. The road was packed with red lights everywhere. Orange cones had funneled two lanes into one, and a detour sign redirected half the cars down a side street but it didn’t help. Everyone was stuck. I turned the music up and tapped my fingers against the wheel while watching the red brake lights ahead. Ellis email from earlier flashed through my mind. I have replayed the conversation a hundred times already, and I still wasn’t ready. A horn blares behind me and I jump slightly to realise the line has moved. Velles is easy to get from the street. The building was all white with black glass. The windows went all the way up and inside, a strip of original brick ran along one wall, rough against all that clean white space. I parked in the visitor lot and went in. The lobby
CHAPTER EIGHTELLIS POVI stare at the name displayed on my phone and my heartbeat races.I set my coffee down the second cup today and let it go to voicemail. took three seconds of silence before it starts ringing again and I finally press the answer button"Ellis." Her voice cuts through the speaker coldly. Exactly as I remember."Mother."I answered "I saw the news, your father needs you to come home tonight.”Of course she did. Not how are you,not are you alright. Just straight to the point."I can't,I have a lot to do…”" Do not make me stress myself,Ellis"she cuts in sharply and the line goes dead.I sit there, the phone still pressed to my ear in the silence.Home, she wants me home. The place I have not stepped foot in for two years. The place I swore I would never go back to.I should refuse and ignore her completely. But if I don't show up, she will do wh
CHAPTER SEVENELLIS POVI stare at the wall clock as a car passes outside, the sound fading as it moves down the street.A few minutes later, another car goes by,then the street goes silent again.I pick up my phone, open the browser and type "Hawthorne Group" into the search bar.My hand stills over the screen for a second before I press enter and let the results load.BREAKING NEWS: Hawthorne Group CEO Accused of Design TheftThe phone almost slips from my hand. I tap the first link. Two columns of sketches fill the screen. Almost identical designs, mine on the left with the Velles logo and Alex's company on the right.I scroll back up and look at them again. These are not stolen. These are samples from our meetings. We worked on it together.Someone took it and twisted the narration beautifully.I checked the time,3:23 AM.No messages and no call from Alex since yesterday.I drop back on
CHAPTER 6ALEX POVI tilt the bottle over the glass and watch the last drop of whiskey pour in.I lost count after the first few swigs.I should stop. It's past midnight and I have a company to run tomorrow.Instead, I reached for the bottle, the amber liquid shone as I poured it into the glass.I kept pouring, ignoring how much was already in the glass.I lost track somewhere between one and three pours.I leaned back in my chair and took a long sip.The whiskey burns past my throat, sharp and bitter, but the ache in my chest doesn’t ease.My stomach twists at the memory of Ellis in that bar with her pressed between his legs with those hazel eyes locked on mine.My hands clench at the thought that he must have purposely did that to make me feel it all.The sharp burning pain of want and jealousy. The worst part?It did work, because I felt it all.I looked at the tie crumpled on the floor and my jack
CHAPTER 5 ELLIS POV The VIP room feels smaller somehow. The air is heavy and filled with the smell of alcohol mixed with a stinging regret that makes me realise how badly I just messed up. I keep holding my phone even though the screen is off. I don't need to look at it anymore. That photo is stuck in my mind now. Someone has it..someone knows about us. "What was that message?"Alex's voice cuts and it snaps me out of my head. He's still standing by the table, in the same spot where, not long ago I was about to throw out all of my senses through the window. I should have known better than to call him out here. I should have known that playing games with Alex Hawthorne was never going to end well for me. But the look on his face when that stripper touched me. That flash of jealousy on his face just for a second.I'm not proud of it, but it felt like
