Chapter 10

Author: Orange
It wasn't long before the web of lies Juliet weaved finally crumbled apart around her. She'd accidentally left her phone at Shawn's apartment. It was brought to a technician, who found an encrypted folder containing a chain of secret emails between her and Leon.

They'd been covertly plotting with each other for several years now. After drugging Mom through manipulation and causing the car explosion, they slowly schemed against me, the biological daughter who was the next obstacle to their grand plan.

In fact, they made multiple attempts to convince Shawn's assistant to orchestrate my downfall by making me have a meltdown and humiliate myself in public.

All of this was done in a bid to dismantle the Calhoun family's mafia empire.

Juliet was brought to the Calhoun family's interrogation room, a windowless room in the old city district. Black-and-white portraits of three generations' family heads hung on the wall, and the stench of blood lingered in the air.

After I'd left the family, Dad didn't truly brush everything off. He secretly started an investigation and was able to piece together fragments of the truth. Before the meeting that led to Mom's death, the list of people accompanying her had been altered at the last minute. Leon was indeed the only person Juliet had close contact with before she joined the family. And most importantly, she had been seen in the area before Mom departed that day.…On this day, in the middle of my birthday celebration at Aunt Marissa's house, Dad came storming into the house, having made his way over despite the heavy snow.Eyes fraught with mixed emotions, he confronted Aunt Marissa, demanding, "What right did you have to steal my daughter away without a word?"William had followed close behind. Standing in the doorway with a grim expression, he eyed Aunt Marissa in displeasure. "How could you hide Olivia from us, Aunt Marissa? We've been looking for her for so long. Do you know how worried we we

Lying on my side, I settled on the large, comfortable bed with a warm blanket pulled up to my shoulders. The room was silent. Only the sound of rain tapping against the window could be heard. On a whim, I logged into the social media account that I hadn't touched in months. Immediately, I was flooded with hundreds of unread messages. My old classmates, neighbors, and other acquaintances were all asking me where I'd gone. They said Dad, William, and even Shawn had launched a frenzied search for me.Those words made my lips curve into a faint sneer. They were looking for me, huh? Did they want me to go back there and continue to spend my entire life apologizing to Juliet? Or were they trying to destroy what was left of my dignity?I turned off my phone, exiting that hollow world filled with nothing but noise.…On Christmas Eve, I went back to Aunt Marissa's house, but I froze when I entered the living room.Beneath the chandelier was a three-layer cake with the candles already l

Aunt Marissa was the founder and a therapist at MindCare Treatment Center. Prior to this, she worked as a professor and deputy head of the department of psychology at Stockford University. It was only after Mom's passing that she decided to quit her job.Backed by a few private investors, she built a treatment center on the edge of the redwood forest near Sandridge, in the northern part of the state. The treatment center was situated in a private estate surrounded by forest and secluded from the outside world. Access was strictly restricted to those who were brought in by the center's pre-arranged transportation. There was no internet access. Social media accounts weren't allowed, and even visitation was off-limits. Every patient had to sign a confidentiality agreement and was subjected to a minimum three-month observation period.Aunt Marissa had me brought in under the guise of a patient's family member who was accompanying them. She had me undergo a healing program as well.At 5

Dad and William brought Juliet to South Point to see the penguins. Throughout the trip, William kept checking his phone to see if there were any updates from me. Over the last few days, not once did I post anything on my social media account.William asked the Calhoun family's butler, Adam Greene, and heard that I hadn't gone back to the Calhoun residence either. He got a feeling that something was amiss."We only arrived at South Point a few days ago, Will. I still want to see more of the penguins," Juliet whined in displeasure. "Must you go back now?""If you want to stare at penguins, there are plenty of videos of them online," William responded curtly. "Our family matters are more important."Wanting to cajole him, she reached for his arm, but he surreptitiously avoided her."You keep checking your phone. Are you worried about Olivia?""Why don't you call her Livie anymore?" William suddenly asked, knowing that she used to address me as Livie to symbolize our close relationsh

Dragging my suitcase, I left the house. I'd just left the neighborhood when I heard footsteps behind me.It was Shawn. He didn't have an umbrella with him. His clothes were splattered with rainwater."Is it so hard for you to just back down and say something decent for once, Olivia?" Shawn questioned. "Juliet's such a wonderful person. Why must you insist on butting heads with her? What on earth are you trying to prove?"I didn't respond. I'd long since felt like there was nothing left for Shawn and me to say to each other. However, my silence angered him.Eyes blazing with fury, he grabbed me and demanded, "Can you stop acting like you're a lifeless zombie? Can't you just give in and admit your mistakes? As long as you apologize to Juliet and swear you'll treat her nicely, I'll get engaged to you, okay?"After a while, I said, "We broke up ages ago, didn't we, Shawn? With the way you and Juliet are practically glued to each other, neither one of you has bothered to keep your rela
