Chapter 1

Author: Sheepy
"To be honest, I'm used to having you around. How many years have we known each other, ever since elementary school?"

As my childhood sweetheart, Jack Jenner, embraced me, I could not stop the shivers that wracked my body.

I had known Jack for 16 years, and we had been sleeping together for eight.

Just five minutes ago, he wished he could merge into one with me.

I thought we were in love. Although we never said it out loud, I always believed we had a strong understanding. I had long assumed that we were a couple, but I never expected... myself to just be his friend with benefits.

The birth control pill did not go down smoothly. It stuck to my throat, making it hard to speak.

"How about another round?" Jack gently pushed me back onto the bed.

The pink bed cover was the one I put on yesterday while Jack lifted the mattress for me. He had joked, "We're like an old couple."

Now, my mind was in a complete mess.

"You've taken the pill anyway. Don't waste it. Consider it as drawing a perfect ending to our absurd youth."

I instinctively pressed against Jack's shoulders. "You said you're getting engaged?"

In a good mood, Jack grabbed my wrist in one go as his melodious voice invaded my ears. "I wanted to tell you, but a little greedy cat was eager for some action and blocked my mouth. Lina came back. She said she still wants to marry me."

Lina Andrews was the class belle who rejected Jack's confession at our high school graduation ceremony. Later on, Jack would even drink three full glasses of liquor to stop her name from being mentioned.

They were getting engaged?

Oblivious to my shock, Jack excitedly shared, "I had someone check the dates, and the earliest will be Sunday! Lina doesn't have many old friends since she's been abroad these past few years. You can help her fend off the drinks at the engagement party and be her bridesmaid at the wedding."

As he spoke, he seemed to remember something and pulled an invitation card from the bedside table drawer. "Lina said she wants me to design the wedding invitations, but I don't understand girls' taste. My darling Ariana, give me some advice."

Just twenty minutes ago, I had pulled the bitter birth control pills from that drawer.

The pristine white invitation was understated yet elegant. Jack's and Lina's names were interwoven like a pattern. It was clearly a carefully designed piece that cost a handsome sum.

Jack had already decided to marry Lina. He was preparing for his wedding to someone else while sleeping with me.

A surge of anger made me tremble. "Jack, you want me to see the invitation to your wedding to another woman while we're still in bed?"

I tore the invitation to shreds in the blink of an eye. "You're getting engaged and married, so what the hell am I?"

"Ariana! Have you lost your mind? Why tear up my invitation?" Jack was so busy picking up the pieces and did not even notice my expression.

When he saw me getting out of bed to get dressed, he grabbed my arm.

"Why are you making a fuss? If I don't get engaged or married, am I supposed to fool around with you forever? I don't even like you!"

After he finished yelling, he belatedly realized he had gone too far. He frowned at me as he added dryly, "I consider you my best friend, a childhood sweetheart who'd sleep in the same bed..."

Though he said so, he loosened his grip as if he had touched trash. His expression returned to its usual nonchalance as he tilted his head to look at me with a deliberately teasing smile. "Or am I just too charming that you've fallen head over heels for me without even realizing it? Ariana, don't scare me."

Jack pretended to be calm, but his panicked eyes betrayed him. His fear of being pestered made me smile bitterly, and my eyes burned.

This only made him more flustered, so he simply turned his back to me with a cold expression as he got dressed.

"Ariana, we've been best friends since we were kids. If you cry, it'll just make it seem like I've bullied you. We have gender equality now. Don't be so old-fashioned. It's not funny!"

He straightened his clothes, turned around, and left. "Lina's plane has landed. I'll take her to a hotel tonight. Pack up your things, especially those cheap, identical trinkets you bought. Take them all away. Don't leave any for me."

His last words to me before closing the door were, "We won't do this anymore. It's not fair to Lina."

After our parting at the hospital, Jack came to see me again. I had no intention of meeting him at first. I had already been discharged from the hospital and was preparing to go to Jakersville to marry Joshua, but Jack tried to take his life by slitting his wrists. He asked an old friend to contact me, but the friends who attended the engagement party despised him and Lina. Finally, Jack attempted suicide again at the hospital, forcing the doctors to help him contact me. Jack invited me to a coffee shop. Joshua sent me there and waited for me at the door.In just a few months, Jack seemed to have aged more than a decade. He had not shaved his stubble, and he no longer showed any trace of his youthful appearance. "Ariana!"As soon as he saw me, Jack became agitated and reached out to grab my wrist, but then he stopped himself as if he just remembered something. "I've asked around. Joshua is indeed the heir of the Zachman family. I also know that you only agreed to the marriage

"How could this be?"Jack seemed to have been stabbed right in his heart. He jumped up in pain. "Ariana! Are you trying to trick me again? We were together for eight years! How could you possibly marry someone else?"As he spoke, Jack gave a cautious and pleading smile. "My dear Ariana... Don't scare me... "They were similar words but with a completely different tone.I sighed. "Jack, why do you keep thinking I'm tricking you? Is my sincerity so worthless to you? Forget it, Jack. We're not the same. The past is my own fault. I've accepted it and paid the price. From now on, let's just keep our distance... "Before I could finish, Jack became so agitated that he seemed ready to explode. "Ariana! What nonsense are you saying? We're childhood sweethearts! Eight years! How could you just casually deny it? How could you be so heartless? Look at the man in front of you! What's so good about him? Does he have money? Is he handsome? He—"This time, I interrupted him, "Shut up! Joshua is

Lina rushed toward me while speaking but was stopped by Joshua, who blocked her in place."Oh! You're quite protective!" Lina gritted her teeth, crossed her arms, and scoffed. "You don't know? You're protecting a whore who has been sleeping around! A slut who has slept with other men for eight years! She's even had an abortion! Can you accept that? Let me go! Or I'll sue you for rape!"Lina said and pulled off her gown. She messed up her hair, about to scream at the top of her lungs, but a force immediately pulled her hair and threw her to the side."Who let you disturb Ariana?" Jack, who had rushed in, grabbed the screaming Lina and kicked her in the groin. "Didn't you want to kneel and apologize to Ariana the other day? Now, you get your chance! Kneel! Apologize!"I was somewhat at a loss and instinctively grabbed Joshua's hand. This scene pierced Jack's heart like a sharp dagger. He shouted at the top of his lungs, "Ariana! How could you hold another man's hand?"After saying

"I have ears and eyes. I can hear and see. Those who are genuinely sorry should never be the ones who were sincere."Facing my astonished gaze, Joshua pursed his lips and added softly, "If you don't mind my current condition, could you give me a chance?"He seemed a bit nervous, but his gaze toward me remained completely magnanimous. It turned out that my dad had already disclosed my entire eight-year history to him at the beginning of the marriage arrangement. The reason was that he dared not deceive the powerful Zachman family. My father was a businessman through and through, always driven by a profit-driven mentality that refused to give up even if there was only a glimmer of hope. Unexpectedly, Joshua agreed without hesitation. Not only did he provide financial assistance, but he even came to pick me up himself.Unlike Jack, who had a somewhat rough and aggressive appearance, Joshua seemed extremely honest. He pulled up his left trouser leg, revealing half of his mechanical le

Jack frowned and chuckled. "You're whose fiancé? Ariana's? Buddy, have you lost your mind? Do you know she was with me for eight years..."Before he could finish his sentence, he was elbowed to the ground. Two rows of black-clad bodyguards who had rushed past stopped Jack from shouting and yelling."Let go of Ariana! Where are you taking her?"Jack stood up to chase after them, but Lina grabbed his arm. "Jack! Are you okay? Calm down! This might be an act Ariana is putting on. Seeing your firm determination, she prepared an exit plan for herself. "If you chase after her now, you're going to make her think that she's more important to you than me. Jack, if you really like Ariana, I'll leave right now!"Lina threatened to leave but did not move her feet at all. It was not until she was pulled into Jack's arms that she showed a triumphant smile.Jack gritted his teeth and clenched his fists. "I can't believe she used such a method to make me coax her! I won't give her the chance!"

The soft snap made me break out in a cold sweat instantly.Three years ago, Jack had a high fever at night, and it happened to be when the power in the neighborhood was out.I carried Jack, who was two sizes taller than me, up the eight-story building. I stepped off the edge and twisted my ankle, breaking it. The doctor said that I could not injure this ankle again, or there was a possibility of lifelong disability. The pain was even worse than that year. When I fell, my phone flew to one side. It was now flashing on and off, and my voice trembled with pain. "Jack, help me call an ambulance."The Zachman family's heir I was going to marry had a crippled leg. I did not want to end up crippled like him.I pleaded with Jack. He rushed toward me, but Lina wrapped her arms around his waist when he was close.Lina's eyes were red, as if she had suffered great injustice and shock. "I... I didn't do it!"She looked at J
