Chapter 3 Freedom and Reluctance

Author: Nora Blythe
There was a caption in their story, and it read, "Sometimes love makes you forget about your duties."

Everyone who left a comment told him to be brave and pursue his true love.

Eighty million was enough to pay for all my treatments. I smiled bitterly, and my eyes slowly blurred. A moment later, tears fell onto my phone screen.

At least, we were both free now.

For nearly a whole month, Anthony did not contact me. He probably wanted to give all his time to Lily. The stories he barely posted now had new updates every single day.

As if he had planned every moment down to the second, he checked off every item on their bucket list.

The last story showed him in a suit, taking a set of wedding photos with Lily. He said he wanted to see the woman he loved in a wedding gown.

The day after he posted that, Anthony called me. Raspily, he said, "Grab your ID and go to the city hall, Melissa." Then, he hung up before I could answer.

For the first time in three years, he was the one asking for the license. I was about to text him my refusal when I suddenly remembered that I had not taken back the ring my father had given him.

At the very least, it should not remain with him.

And so, I went to the city hall. The things around here were the same as they were three years ago. I had walked this path countless times, and for the first time, no accidents happened.

I had to wait outside the entrance for an hour before Anthony showed up. There were dark circles under his eyes, and the air around him smelled faintly of tobacco. We had dated long enough for me to know that he only smoked when he was in a bad mood.

It had been a month since we met, and the sight of my current state stunned him. "What happened to you?"

Because of the cancer, I had lost so much weight in a month that I looked almost unrecognizable. It was obvious that I looked hideous. He did not have to remind me.

My silence made him frown. "You sure you want to look like this for your license photo?"

"We're not taking the license. I just want you to give me back my father's ring." I extended my hand.

His eyes went wide, and he thought I was being unreasonable. A sneer escaped his lips, and he dragged me into the city hall.

"Don't give me that. You think this marriage is set in stone? Fine, you win. Get the license and get the wedding over with ASAP," he said, already giving up the ghost.

The staff member started the process right away. "Your details, please."

Anthony took his ID out and handed it to the staff member. As he moved, part of the tattoo on his wrist was revealed. It was Lily's initials.

The staff member had no idea what was really going on and tried to lighten the atmosphere. "Oh, you're so in love. Tattooing her name on your wrist? Must be a happy couple."

Anthony paused for a moment and pulled his sleeve down awkwardly. His eyes shifted toward me, but I did not react. He mocked, "Didn't bring your ID in case you got into an accident?"

I took a deep breath. "I've told you, we're not getting the license. Give the ring…"

Anthony's phone suddenly rang sharply. The moment he answered, his best friend's anxious voice came through. "Anthony, Lily tried to kill herself at home with sleeping pills! She said Melissa made her do it…"

Anthony shot up from his seat right away.

It had been months since we met, and he did not fare much better than I did. The moment he saw me, fear filled his eyes. "Melissa…""The marriage has been called off. Except for the years we spent growing up together, we share no more ties. What are you doing here?"Anthony hugged me with so much strength, it felt like he wanted to meld me into himself. He tried to keep his crying quiet, but his tears quickly soaked through my shoulder.Soon, those quiet sobs turned into open weeping. When he spoke, the words didn't come out all at once. "No, we don't have to call it off. We promised to stay together forever."I blinked, a little slow on the uptake. I wasn't expecting this change in attitude.Stay together forever? That had been ten years ago. Back when my parents were still alive. Back when Anthony and I were still close. He held my hand and grinned at me as he said he would be my groom.Ten years was a long time. Long enough to change a lot of things.I pushed him away, though

Samantha said nothing. Her silence was the only answer he needed. All the strength drained from his body. He lost his balance and fell to the ground. It was then that memories hit him. I had asked him for a loan, and he let Lily insult me. Then he spent eighty million buying a cruise ship for Lily just to prove a point. He could not imagine how I must have felt back then.A strangled sob escaped his throat, and tears spilled from his eyes. "I'm sorry… I messed up. Mom, tell me where she is. I'll get the best doctors money can buy. She'll be okay. She has to be okay."Although her son was finally drowning in regret, Samantha only shook her head."I won't tell you. Everyone must pay for their mistakes. You thought she didn't know you set up those accidents so you wouldn't have to get the license? She was just lying to herself, telling herself that you loved her. You think someone like her would force another girl into suicide?"With that, Samantha kicked him out of the house, and An

Lily asked, "You don't trust me?"Anthony hung his head low in frustration. Every time he heard my name, he felt as if something was slipping away from him. Something he could no longer hold on to. "Just get some rest, and don't try to take your own life again."This marriage is set in stone. I've hurt her more times than I could count over the last three years, and that was for you. I've spent a whole month ticking off everything on your wishlist. From now on, let’s not contact each other anymore."He left in a hurry. Lily was still standing in stunned silence, and her outstretched hand kept shivering.Anthony sent out more men to look for me, yet they found nothing. And so, he went to his mother."Do you know where Melissa's gone? She went missing out of nowhere, and I can't even find her."Samantha looked at him and answered coldly, "Give up. I've called off the marriage. Wherever she is now is none of your business."The answer hit Anthony like a truck. His world spun, and

"The patient is fine," the doctor said. "She did not take a dangerous amount. She should wake up soon."Anthony heaved a sigh of relief. His mind was still reeling even now. Things had happened so fast. The moment he saw Lily lying on the bed and unmoving, he panicked. Now that he had time to calm down and process everything, his breathing hitched. He realized he had force-fed me sleeping pills, and the implication frustrated him.His attention was all on Lily before they left, and I was forgotten. Anthony turned to his men. "Where's Melissa? Did you take her to the hospital? Have the doctor pump her stomach and let this whole thing pass."The bodyguards exchanged a look, and they stammered, "You didn't give us that order, sir, so we did as you wanted us to. She's probably still there."Anthony turned five shades whiter. He had force-fed me enough sleeping pills to kill an adult in two hours. His footsteps became frantic and unsteady as he shoved through the crowd and rushed out

Every ounce of sanity he had left was gone, and only fear was etched on his face. "How dare you, Melissa!" He glowered at me, his teeth clenched. That was the first time I saw him looking so enraged. He did not even give me a chance to explain. He only told his bodyguards to drag me over to Lily's place.Lily's house was a mess. The photos of her and Anthony had been smashed, their frames scattered across the floor. Lily lay on the bed, her face frighteningly pale, as if every bit of life had been drained from her.Anthony lost all strength in his legs, and he nearly had to crawl on all fours just to approach her. He held her hand tightly. With a trembling voice, he said, "It's me, Lily. I'm calling off the marriage. I'm not taking that license. Please, open your eyes. Look at me."The half-finished bottle of sleeping pills lay beside Lily's hand, and a suicide note written in blood sat beside that bottle. She blamed it all on me and filled the note with accusations that targeted m
