Chapter 1

The first thing Lawrence Yancey said when he returned was, "Drop the charges."

He placed the court summons on the dining table, sounding more like he was informing rather than discussing with me.

I put the last shirt on a neatly folded pile of clothes in my luggage case.

"You're seriously bringing me to court over a necklace?"

He tugged at his necktie and sat opposite me. "Wendy just joined us, and her birthday coincided with our project closing. As her supervisor, it's not too much to give her a gift."

I shut my luggage case.

"Not at all."

The angles of this face softened. "So, drop the lawsuit. I'll go with you to court tomorrow to explain things."

"I'm not dropping it."

Lawrence stared at me for a few seconds and suddenly picked up his phone.

Soon after, I received a text from the bank.

[The supplementary card ending in 7319 has been suspended.]

"I'll have your card suspended until you calm down."

He leaned back into his chair and said calmly, "Your expenses have been getting out of hand lately. Spending over 7,000 on medical tests, and now, you're even hiring a lawyer. Niki, I'm not punishing you. I'm helping you stop before things get worse."

I looked at the text and wasn't the least bit surprised.

Over the past three years, our fights always ended this way.

He never scolded me or smashed things.

At just a touch of a button, I wouldn't be able to buy a box of pills or hail a taxi. I'd even have to check my account balance before I could buy a bag of fruits for my mom.

Lawrence's voice softened at my silence. "I know the nodule has gotten you anxious. Since you've found out that it's benign, it proves that my initial assumption was right. There's no need to get a divorce over this."

"Just because it is benign, does that make it right for me to reject going for a test?"

"At least we wouldn't have incurred that expense."

He answered too quickly, as though he had already concluded so in his mind.

I pulled my luggage case up. "Keep the card."

Lawrence stood up to block the door with his body. "Where are you going?"

"My mom's."

"That old house your mom lives in doesn't even have an elevator. You won't be able to last for more than a few days."

He grabbed the handle of the luggage case and reminded me patiently, "Remember that I pay for all her blood pressure medication and blood glucose lancets every month. Doing this out of spite will only make things difficult for her."

I clenched my fists tighter.

"How much of your money did she spend over the past three years?"

Lawrence furrowed his brows. "What's the point of drawing the line so clearly between husband and wife?"

"Isn't that what you do best?"

I pulled out my phone. "Medication, festive celebrations, two medical checkups and tests. I've listed them all. A total of 48,600 dollars. You can deduct that from my portion when the court decides on division of property between us."

"Niki."

His voice finally turned cold. "You don't have an income. What do you mean ‘your portion'?"

I looked up at him.

Part of the deposit we paid for the house was 900,000 dollars from proceeds of the small apartment I had sold before we got married.

I had covered all our daily expenses using my own savings during the first two years of his entrepreneurship.

When his father had a stroke, I quit my job to take care of him for four whole years.

Yet, his claim that I didn't have an income meant that he thought I didn't have a share of our assets.

Lawrence seemed to realize the impact of his words and reached out to touch my shoulder.

"I'm not denying your contributions, but they don't directly translate to money. If you leave me, who's going to pay for your daily necessities and insurance?"

I evaded his touch.

"We'll discuss this in court."

I walked out the door with my luggage case in tow.

He didn't stop me from leaving, but said flatly, "I won't be paying for your mom's business insurance renewal due next month."

I stopped in my tracks for half a second.

Lawrence picked up the summons and flashed it at me. "Send me your application for the withdrawal of the lawsuit once you've written it. Once I approve it, I'll lift the suspension on your card and resume insurance payments."

I took the piece of paper from him and then slowly tore it into two.

Lawrence's phone rang.

I could hear Wendy's voice through the phone as she choked back sobs.

"Lawrence, my landlord wants me to move out tonight. I don't know who else I can go to…"

Lawrence gave me a furtive glance, grabbed his car keys, and walked toward the door.

He stopped in his tracks right before he left.

"Think about it tonight. If you withdraw the lawsuit before tomorrow morning, I can take it that nothing happened."

Six months later, I went for a follow-up check at the hospital. The doctor looked through my report and said, "There are no obvious changes to the nodule. Just continue with regular monitoring, and you'll be fine."I took the report from him and thanked him.At the cashier counter, I paid for the medical fees with my own bank card.It cost me 186 dollars.I didn't seek anyone's approval or submit any receipts. No one asked me if the appointment was worth the money or not.My mom sat in the corridor, waiting for me with two cups of soy milk in her hands."How did it go?""Not bad."She heaved a sigh of relief and pushed a cup of warm soy milk into my hands. "I wanted to go in with you, yet you insisted on going in by yourself.""I have to come back many times. I can't keep asking you to come along every time.""Why not?"I wrapped my arms around hers and smiled. When I walked out of the hospital, I saw Lawrence standing at the entrance. He had lost a lot of weight since ou

After my divorce, I moved back in with my mom.Recovery of her foot was slow, and I accompanied her for her rehabilitation therapy every day.Without the 300-dollar spending limit, I didn't need to take photos of receipts all the time. The first time I went to the supermarket after everything was over, I bought a box of peaches worth 40 dollars. When I paid for it, I automatically opened my phone camera. My mom pressed my phone down. "Just buy it. Why are you taking a photo of it?"I stood stunned for a few seconds before putting my phone back into my bag. That box of peaches was sweet. When I ate the third one, I finally realized that I was still waiting for an approval message that never existed.Lawrence would come every week.He never entered the house, merely leaving some medicine and fruits at the door.My mom never took them.Once, it was pouring, and he stood there for two hours. When I opened the door, I saw that his hair was completely drenched."I've arranged f

My father had left me with 680,000 dollars after he passed on.Lawrence had kept the bank card with him.He had accused me of being moody and was worried that I might spend it recklessly. Instead, he would carefully plan what to do with the money if I ever needed it.I hadn't checked the balance over the past three years. Now, the account only had 4,700 dollars left.420,000 dollars had been transferred to Wendy.Lawrence had spent the rest of the money on the balance payment for the house renovations and Mrs. Yancey's travel expenses.I flashed him the bank statements."Explain yourself."Lawrence's voice was hoarse. "Cash flow was tight during that period. I used it just to tide us over.""Why did you transfer so much money to Wendy?""Her mom was ill, and she had just graduated from school without any savings."I chuckled. "Her mom fell ill, and you were willing to help no matter how much money it took. I had a nodule, yet I needed your approval for 7,200 dollars.""I d

At the first court mediation session, Lawrence rejected getting a divorce. The mediator asked, "Is there a chance of reconciliation?""Yes."Lawrence answered very quickly. "We don't have any irreconcilable differences, just differences in our approaches to financial management."I looked at the mediator and said, "No."Lawrence turned to face me. "Niki, I've paid off all of your mom's medical fees and lifted the limit on your card.""I've returned it all.""I even sent the property documents to your lawyer.""You only did so after the court froze the properties."The mediator flipped through our documents. "Mr. Yancey, Ms. Scott claims that you've put her under long-term financial control and even forged her signature to transfer assets. What is your response to her accusations?"Lawrence said darkly, "I am in charge of all of our family's expenses. I set a limit to her spending to prevent impulse buying. I admit signing the document on her behalf wasn't appropriate, but it

After Lawrence left the police station, he made a beeline for the hospital.Instead of entering the ward, he stood outside the door and texted me.[Come out. Let's have a chat.]I replied to him: [Contact my lawyer instead.]A few minutes later, he pushed the door open and walked through it.My mom saw him and immediately turned her face away.Lawrence put a fruit basket down on the table. "Mom, does your foot still hurt?""Don't call me 'Mom'."Her voice wasn't loud, but there was no hesitation in it. "My daughter had to do some medical tests, and you thought 7,200 dollars was too expensive. Wendy celebrated her birthday, yet you bought her a necklace worth 8,600 dollars. I'm afraid I don't deserve you addressing me as your mom."Lawrence's face turned pale. "It was a misjudgment on my part regarding the medical tests.""It wasn't a misjudgment."I tucked the corners of my mom's sheets in. "You just didn't think it was worth it to spend a single cent on me."He looked at m

When the police walked through the door, Mrs. Yancey was on her knees, picking up the pieces of the agreement I had torn.Lawrence stood in front of me, blocking their view. "This is our family's internal affair. We can resolve it privately."I handed the mortgage document and recording to the police."Please look into this and determine for yourself whether this is merely a family dispute."The police verified the information I handed them and looked at Lawrence. "You had someone sign on the field for your spouse's signature?""It wasn't convenient for her to come back. I sought her verbal permission to do this."I asked, "When did I agree to do this?"Lawrence didn't answer my question.During that time, I had been with Mr. Lawrence every day, accompanying him for his rehabilitation therapy. My call records would reflect this clearly. He had never mentioned the mortgage, not to mention Wendy's house.Mrs. Yancey cut in. "My son earned the money. Why can't he buy a house wit
