Chapter 2

Author: More Treats
Simone went home to get Anthony to sign the divorce papers, only to find an ambulance parked outside.

A visibly anxious maid cried, "Bad news, Mrs. Lancaster! Ms. Stone's kidney disease has suddenly worsened."

Winona's face was bloodless, and she'd passed out on the stretcher.

A second later, Anthony called. Simone hesitated for a beat before picking up. Over the phone, she heard him shouting commands in the distance. "Everyone, prep for a possible kidney transplant just in case we need it!"

Then, he spoke directly into the phone. "Simone, there's a patient with the same rare blood type as you. She's in critical condition, so get to the hospital now!"

The patient he meant was Winona.

Simone felt like her heart had been wrung so tight that it had shattered. She was about to refuse when she heard a shout on the other end of the line. "Mr. Lancaster, we've found a new donor! It's a child who also has the same rare blood type!"

Anthony fell silent. Then, as he strode out, he asked, "Is it a boy or a girl? How old?"

"It's a nine-year-old girl named Thalia Nolan."

Anthony stabbed at his phone, cutting the line abruptly.

Simone felt like a bomb had detonated in her head. Thalia was her sister—her only family left in this world!

She screamed into the dead line, "Anthony, stop! My sister can't donate—she has a blood coagulation disorder! Anthony Lancaster, stop!"

But all that remained was the busy tone.

Then, her phone rang again. This time, it was from the hospital. "Ms. Nolan, your sister was taken away by force! Her coagulation issue is so close to being fixed. What on earth is going on?"

The doctor's urgent voice pierced Simone's ears until all that was left was roaring. Her hands shook as she called Anthony again and again. He declined each call.

His text arrived a second later. "Quiet. I'm in surgery."

Then, he blocked her.

Those few words pushed Simone to the brink. She raced to the Lancaster family's private hospital in a frenzy, but she was still too late. By the time she arrived, the transplant was over.

Thalia lay quietly on the operating table. Her blood was dripping and pooling into a slick red puddle beneath her.

Simone staggered out to look for a doctor, only to be told that every doctor had already transferred with Winona. The nearest ambulance wouldn't arrive for 20 minutes.

"Simone…" Thalia whispered. Her face was as white as snow.

"Thalia! I'm here. I'm right here." Simone felt despair claw into her as she looked at the nonstop bleeding.

Thalia flashed a strained smile. "Simone, are we going home… after I get my shots today?"

Simone held her tightly, swallowing her sobs. "Yes, we are. Hang on for a bit longer, okay? Just hang on, and we can go home."

Thalia's smile became a bit more relaxed, but her eyelids drooped.

Simone almost gagged on her grief. "Hold on, Thalia! Don't sleep! Please!"

The warmth in her arms kept ebbing away, shredding her heart inch by inch.

By the time the ambulance finally arrived, Thalia's body was already cold.

"Ms. Nolan, I'm sorry for your loss." A doctor sighed.

Simone sat numbly in the pool of blood as a tidal wave of grief crashed over her, crushing her throat. Her only family in this world was gone.

She gathered Thalia's body and stumbled toward the exit like a walking corpse. As she turned the corner, she saw Anthony's car. She heard a heated argument inside.

"Mr. Lancaster, you knew we couldn't operate without fully evaluating Thalia Nolan! She's Mrs. Lancaster's sister!"

"I know!" Anthony's voice was clipped and anxious. "But Winona couldn't wait. She would've died if we'd dragged things out any longer! You know it wasn't easy to find another match for her blood type. Simone turned out fine, and Thalia will be, too!"

Calvin sighed and asked, "Did you approach Mrs. Lancaster back then partly because of her blood type?"

Silence enveloped the car.

Simone pursed her lips, waiting for Anthony's answer.

"Maybe," he said coolly. It tore Simone's heart to pieces.

She smiled bleakly, feeling like a piece of her soul had been carved out. The salvation she'd once believed in had only ever been a transaction with a price tag.

A strange discomfort pricked at Anthony after he spoke. He cleared his throat and lowered his voice. "Simone has always said that the wedding we never finished was her biggest regret. I'll give her a grand one in three days to make up for it; I'll treat her well from now on.

"As for Thalia's kidney… Don't tell Simone yet. That way, she can focus on the wedding. The new supplements from overseas that just arrived are best for strengthening the body. Send them to her. I'll come up with new prescriptions."

"Yes, sir."

The car sped off. Its exhaust made Simone's eyes sting and turn bloodshot. She retched again.

Calvin called her. She picked up.

"Mrs. Lancaster, Mr. Lancaster said there are some supplements that you need to sign for. Is it convenient for you to head home now? He also said he'll take you to try on wedding dresses and diamond rings tomorrow. He's already booked your favorite designer."

Simone parted her lips as her tears fell without her permission.

She wanted to tell Calvin that she didn't need any of these things anymore. She wanted to tell Anthony that her precious Thalia was dead, as was the Simone who'd loved him.

He'd killed them himself.

It was a long time before Anthony was finally released. He stared at Skylar, who stood tall and imposing before him. He frowned as he realized Skylar was the one who'd taken Simone away. His voice was hoarse as he asked, "Why have you let me go? Aren't you afraid Simone will find out you're this brutal, vicious person?"Skylar merely laughed like he'd just heard a ridiculous joke, but his eyes were icy as he looked at Anthony. "You think I did all of this behind Simone's back? What if I told you she knows everything?"Anthony paled and instinctively denied it. "That's impossible. She would never let you treat me like this."Skylar's expression turned cold, and he sneered. "Impossible? How is it impossible? Did you forget what you did to her? The fact that she hasn't asked me to end your life yet is already merciful!"He didn't want to waste his breath on Anthony anymore, so he turned to leave.Anthony shouted, "Stop! Stop right there!"Skylar stopped but didn't turn around. He l

In Elvane, Skylar's lips curled into a cold smile when he saw the message from his informant. He said softly, "The fish has taken the bait."Simone was playing a hunting game with Button. Hearing this, she stood up and walked to Skylar's side. "Is he coming?"She clearly meant Anthony.Skylar nodded. "Yeah. We've laid an elaborate trap in Elvane. The moment Anthony sets foot here, we'll capture him at once."He took Simone's cold, trembling hands and comforted her. "Don't worry, Simone. I'll return the pain he put you through a thousandfold."She bit her lip. Her voice was barely above a whisper as she said, "I just want justice for Thalia and my unborn children. They were innocent."Then, tears streamed down her face. She'd never truly let go of Thalia and her three children. If losing her parents had soaked her life in quiet rain, then losing Thalia and her three children, as well as Anthony's betrayal, had formed an unshakable shadow in her heart.Skylar pulled her into his a

On the other side of town, Winona was partying it up at a nightclub with a bunch of socialites.Several male escorts stood before them, all dressed provocatively. Their bodies were practically plastered to Winona's.But Winona, long known in the Avenport elite circle as a paragon of chastity, wasn't surprised or flustered in the slightest. It was as if this were perfectly routine. She traced a finger lightly over an escort's abs, drawing a wave of laughter. One woman teased, "Aren't you afraid your brother-in-law will show up and bust you for being this wild, Winona?"Winona sneered. "That idiot couldn't put two and two together. He overheard our conversation last time, but I brushed him off without even trying, didn't I?"Anthony listened from outside the room, his expression growing more sour by the second. Then, he flicked a hand. A squad of bodyguards filed into the room, surrounding it from every corner.Winona gasped. "Anthony, what are you doing?"All of the tenderness a

Back in Avenport, the moment Anthony saw the word "Elvane" on the helicopter, he ignored everyone's attempts to stop him and insisted on heading north. This alarmed even his grandfather, Philip Lancaster, who was nearly 80. He leaned on his walking cane, bristling as he glared at Anthony. "Try going to Elvane if you dare, Anthony!""Grandpa, I need to go look for Simone. She's my wife. How can I abandon her?"Philip thumped his walking cane hard against the floor. "Do you even understand what kind of place Elvane is? Once you step out of Avenport, I won't be able to keep you safe, no matter how powerful I am!""I don't need your protection anymore, Grandpa. I have to find Simone, whether you agree to it or not."Philip drew several ragged breaths. Then, he waved at Greg to bring over a few folders. "Take a look at these first. They might help."Anthony took them. When he saw the words "surveillance footage" written on the cover, he sighed. He already knew what it was. "Grandpa, I

In Elvane, Skylar Foley was dressing the wounds on Simone's hands. All ten of her fingertips had been scraped raw by rough gravel. She'd clawed at the villa's stone walls until her nails split after seeing what had happened.People said pain in the fingers ran straight to the heart, but it still couldn't compare to the way Simone's heart felt like it had been slashed open. She was still unconscious. Her brows were tightly knit, like she was trapped in a bad dream. Suddenly, she jolted awake and grabbed Skylar's hand. "No!"Skylar winced. His heart ached at the sight of her like that. He quickly said, "It's okay, it's okay. Simone, it's over now."Simone slowly returned to her senses. She looked around at the unfamiliar room. "Where are we?""My home in Elvane. Somewhere absolutely safe." Skylar pulled the blanket up over her. "I promise no one will hurt you here."At his words, the color returned to her face. She looked puzzled as she asked, "Why did you show up in Avenport, Skyl

Anthony dragged Winona back to the Lancaster residence, ignoring her cries and pleas. "Anthony, let go of me! You're hurting me!"Her carefully done makeup was smudged, and his grip left red marks on her arm.Anthony had to take several deep breaths to steady his voice. "What exactly did you mean by what you said, Winona?"Tears instantly welled up in Winona's eyes at his questioning. She went back to looking like her usual fragile, helpless self. "What else could I mean? I just didn't want to be embarrassed in front of my girlfriends."Anthony's expression stayed dark. "Even so, you can't talk about Simone like that! She's my wife!"At that, Winona's tears fell. "Exactly. All of you have someone to rely on, but I don't! Your brother died young and left me in your care before his death. If I'd known all of you would end up despising me, I would've just died with him!"Anthony pursed his lips and was silent for a long time. Ultimately, he said in a low voice, "I'm sorry, Winona.
