Chapter 288

Author: Millie Bridge
Irvin had a burn scar on his back from when he had saved me during the lab fire in our sophomore year. He had gotten it by shielding me from a falling, burning beam. There should also be a bullet scar, from when he had taken a shot for me on the cruise ship.

As I recalled those memories and how Irvin had risked his life to save mine, I found it even harder to be distant toward him the way I had been when I had lost my memory.

I had given him everything in the past and had treated him better than I treated myself. But back then, he had also reciprocated it. Otherwise, I wouldn't have loved him so strongly.

William and Timothy were taken aback by my eagerness.

Then, almost in unison, they spoke.

"Yes."

"No!"

Timothy had agreed, and William had been against it.

I wasn't surprised by Timothy's response. Based on his earlier reaction, I sensed he felt something toward me instinctually despite his amnesia.

What caught me off guard was William's objection. While we had known each oth

Sure enough, there was a burn scar and a recent bullet-sized scar near his heart.Unexpectedly, I started crying when I saw them. I couldn't control my tears. My emotions hit me so suddenly and intensely that I was overwhelmed and defenseless.Timothy reflexively reached out to wipe away my tears when he saw this.He didn't understand what was happening to him. He obviously had a wife and memories with her, but he couldn't accept her touch. Yet, he had the urge to get closer to me.When I brought up treating his leg, Timothy had instinctively wanted to go with me despite the late hour. Then, when I told him to remove his shirt, he had done so without hesitation. Everything about this was unreasonable, yet he wanted to do everything I asked. He was about to ask me why I was crying when men dressed in black barged into my studio.Once they had taken their places, an imposing-looking lady and Mrs. Hardwell entered. The lady immediately scowled when she saw Timothy shirtless and reac

"I agree," Grace said. "Which is why I suspect you hadn't given birth to fraternal twins but rather identical twin boys back then. One of them must have been switched at birth."She knew there needed to be an explanation for why Irvin and Timothy looked so much alike. Thus, she might as well reveal they were identical twins. However, no one aside from the Hardwells could know the truth behind why both boys hadn't grown up together. So, the only other believable story was that one of them had been switched at birth. Most importantly, the twin that died was Irvin, and the remaining one was the Hardwell heir, Timothy. It was true that in this world, two people couldn't look exactly the same unless they were blood relatives. I had mistaken Timothy for Irvin when we first met. That was why I had suspected they were identical twins. I wasn't surprised by what Grace had said. Even so, I felt one of the twins couldn't possibly have been switched at birth. As I said before, Claudeville an

My gaze turned cold.I had always treated others with respect. But if they kept being disrespectful toward me, I would stop minding my manners."Madam Hardwell, if you're so worried about me treating your son, I can always opt not to," I said coolly.Agatha's eyes widened in disbelief. Clearly, she hadn't expected me to say such a thing."Do you even know what you're saying?" she asked sharply."Madam Hardwell, I can choose not to treat him if you don't trust me to," I repeated plainly.Agatha's expression turned stormy in an instant, but I wasn't afraid. No matter how powerful and influential the Hardwells were, we lived in a society governed by laws.Grace also frowned. She wanted to get me out of the country so I would never appear in front of Timothy again. However, when she learned I had to adjust the treatment according to how his condition developed, she had to put that plan on hold. Her plan now was to wait until Timothy's legs had healed before she drove me away.S

The man, Magnus Hardwell, added, "Our family will be immensely grateful toward you if you're able to cure Tim's condition, Ms. Quill!"I had been genuinely against treating Timothy. However, the Hardwell family head had been frank with his request, so I naturally couldn't continue to be difficult. So, I replied, "Very well. I'll try my best, Mr. Hardwell."…My emotions were in turmoil as I watched the Hardwells leave. Before, my only focus had been confirming whether Timothy was really Irvin. Now that I had, I suddenly didn't know what to think or do—especially when he currently thought he was Timothy.Something obviously had to have happened to the real Timothy, judging from how the Hardwells had insisted Irvin was him. When the heir to such a large family corporation encountered an accident, regardless of where it occurred, it would inevitably trigger a huge upheaval. Additionally, such an incident might even cause their stock prices to plummet. Thus, the Hardwells' insisten

Timothy and Irvin were clearly identical twins, so Magnus didn't understand why Agatha favored Timothy so much—to the point where she had cast Irvin aside without a second thought. Now, with Timothy gone, she still insisted on leaving everything to his unborn child. She expected Irvin to devote himself to the family without getting anything in return. Her treatment of him was more like that of a grudge-holder than a mother."I'm biased? You're the biased one!" Agatha snapped. "Tim treated you so well and listened to your every word. He also always thought of you first, no matter what! She continued, "He hasn't even been gone that long, yet you've already forgotten him. You want to give everything that belongs to him to someone else! How can you be so heartless, Magnus Hardwell!"Magnus' headache worsened. It wasn't that he was heartless. Regardless, their Timothy was gone, so Magnus had to think about the company's future once he had gotten over his grief!Besides, there was no

"Timothy is dead. He died while trying to save Irvin," William said bluntly. "According to the survivors of the cruise ship explosion, you and your mentor weren't the only outsiders onboard. The organization had also invited the real Timothy to the ship to discuss business. "However, he didn't want to get involved with the organization, so a conflict had broken out. And just when he had been about to leave, he coincidentally spotted a cornered Irvin. Seeing that Irvin was badly injured, Timothy had sacrificed himself in order to save his twin brother," he recounted.I was stunned. Hearing the truth had left me at a loss—I didn't know what to make of it."So, the reason the Hardwells insist Irvin is Timothy is to hide that something has happened to Hardwell Group's actual successor. They're doing this to prevent fluctuations in their company's stock prices. Am I right?" I asked.William gave me a look that seemed to say, "Looks like you're not completely clueless."Then, he expl

Irvin had once loved me with fiery intensity. However, he had also hurt me with his cold indifference. He had also nearly killed me on several occasions. That being said, he had also risked his life to save me just as many times. Before I regained my memories of him, all I could remember was the pain he had caused. Back then, the only thing I felt for him was hatred. After my memories returned, I remembered all his past affections and how he had been my salvation. But I could no longer love Irvin wholeheartedly. And yet, I couldn't go back to hating him entirely, either.I didn't know what to do.Right now, our love suddenly seemed so unimportant when Irvin was in a life-and-death situation.I should just focus on treating his legs. And once they were fully healed, we would consider things between us settled. Then, he would live an endlessly wonderful life while I spent mine exploring vast opportunities. We might not keep our marital vows of being together and living happily eve

When I had first met Irvin as Timothy, he had coolly told me to focus on his medical records instead of his face. It had been because he felt the urge to wheel himself up to me and hug me tightly whenever he met my gaze.At the time, Irvin hadn't yet suspected that he wasn't Timothy. He had thought he was married to Grace, and as such, couldn't accept that he had been attracted to me.He had refused to believe he was the kind of man who would lust after another woman just because of her appearance. That was why Irvin had acted so standoffish toward me back then.Looking back now, he realized it hadn't been lust at all, but rather instinctual love.Irvin's words reminded me of what I had said to him on our wedding day.I had said life was neither long nor short. And given how handsome he was, he would undoubtedly face many temptations in the future.I had told Irvin that he could just tell me if he ever stopped loving me, and we would get a divorce. However, I had also said he c

Her expression seemed to say that even after all thes

Seeing how determined I was, Emma didn't press any further.Just as we were about to leave in the car, another car pulled up beside ours. When I saw who stepped out of it, my eyes widened in shock.Emma saw them too and tugged at my sleeve in surprise. "Emilia, isn't that your ex-husband's brother and sister-in-law?"I was just about to say yes when Grace suddenly collapsed into Irvin's arms. He picked her up and rushed toward the hospital.Seeing this reminded me of how I had wished that Irvin would come and save me when I was drowning.I chuckled mockingly.Noticing something was off with me, Emma turned to me. "Emilia, what's wrong?"I withdrew my gaze. "Nothing."Then I told the driver to start driving. As the car drove out of the hospital, Emma stared at me. She hesitated at first, but then curiosity got the better of her "Emilia, looking at how you reacted to your ex-husband's brother… Is it true that he's actually not Timothy, but Irvin?" she asked. She had been with

Only after our car had driven far into the distance did William finally withdraw his gaze from Noah's car."Was Ms. Quill's assistant rescued?" he asked.Matthew immediately replied, "Yes, she's been taken to the hospital. She's out of danger."William hummed indifferently in response, then got into the car and left.…By the time I woke up in the hospital, night had already fallen.I was surprised to see Noah sitting at my bedside—surprised that I was still alive and that it was Noah who had come to save me.Seeing me awake, Noah stood up excitedly. "Emi, how are you feeling? I'll get the doctor!"I wanted to tell him I was fine, but my voice came out hoarse when I opened my mouth.Suddenly, I remembered something and quickly reached out to grab Noah before he could leave to call the doctor. Before I could even ask, he already knew what I was going to ask. "Your assistant's fine. She woke up even earlier than you," he said. Hearing that, I breathed a sigh of relief.Noah

Emma was also quite smart. Once she calmed down, she immediately understood what I meant. She wanted to say something, but I had already opened the car door and pushed her out.Seeing several people swimming toward us, I shoved her again, urging her to leave quickly. In the face of life and death, survival would become an instinct for everyone. So even though she didn't wish me harm or want to leave me behind, she swam away with tears in her eyes. Not long after she left, those so-called "rescuers" surrounded me.When they noticed someone had swum away, they exchanged hand signals underwater, planning to send some after her and others to capture me. Realizing this, I quickly pointed at myself, trying to tell them that I was the one they were looking for. Then I turned and swam in the opposite direction, hoping to lure them away and buy her more time to escape. But even though they understood my gesture, they didn't believe me. They still sent people after her. They were very

There was only one road from the airport to the city, and William's car was right behind ours.Matthew, who was driving, immediately sensed something was wrong when he saw our car suddenly accelerating at an alarming speed. He quickly said, "Mr. Ashford, something's wrong with Ms. Quill's car!"William, who was busy reading the documents, immediately looked up. His gaze darkened when he saw how recklessly the car in front was moving."Catch up with them!" he ordered. At that moment, his phone rang. It was Noah calling, and he sounded anxious on the other end. "Uncle Will, are you with Emi right now? I just heard that Madeleine is planning to kill her! "I don't know the exact plan, but I heard they're making a move on the way from the airport to the city. You need to be careful! I'm heading to the airport right now!"Noah's words made William's expression grow even darker. …While Emma was still processing the situation, I noticed something strange about the driver. If the

Just like that, we came back alive from the brink of death in an instant. It felt like we were in hell one moment and in heaven the next.Perhaps I was still too scared. So scared that even after the plane had stabilized for a while, I still couldn't find any strength in my body. I was still shaken by the fear and couldn't fully snap out of it.William was also holding me tightly the entire time, not letting go. The softness of my body in his arms stirred something in him that he couldn't describe. He instinctively didn't want to let go.It wasn't until a flight attendant knocked on the door to check on us that I finally returned to my senses.William also let go of me instantly. The sudden emptiness in his arms left him feeling rather hollow. He came to realize something, and his already deep gaze darkened even more, making it even harder to read. After the flight attendant tidied up the cabin and left, William, who had been perfectly fine and warm just moments ago, suddenly tur

The flight attendant knocked on the entrance to the suite to signal her arrival and served our meal. Then, she left swiftly.William and I were eating and discussing our AI chip factory when his face suddenly turned red. He couldn't say a word. The moment I saw that, I immediately realized what was happening and rushed over to him.I moved behind him, wrapped my arms around his abdomen, and clenched my fists. With my palm facing upward, I tightened my arms and pressed my left fist forcefully into his upper abdomen again and again, until he finally spat out the seed of a fruit. He had accidentally swallowed the seed while eating dried fruit, and it had gotten stuck in his throat.William stared at the seed he'd just coughed up, looking flustered. A man like him, who was so strong and composed, had choked while eating. He couldn't believe it had actually happened.Especially in front of me!William, who was usually composed no matter the circumstances, now had a face flushed wit

William handed me a glass of champagne and said, "I heard Grace gave you a hard time again at the airport lounge."I hummed in response, confirming it. At the mention of Grace, a thought struck me, and I turned to him. "Mr. Ashford, many of your company's products seem to compete directly with the Hardwells'."Although most of my focus had been on research, I did know a little about the business world. After all, I had a company myself. "Yes, why?" William raised an eyebrow at me."If you're planning to enter the mainland market, wouldn't the Hardwells be your biggest competitor?" I asked.Upon hearing that, William's dark eyes lit up with interest. "Are you trying to join forces with me against the Hardwells?"I knew that I couldn't hide my intentions from someone like William, so I answered honestly, "I'm just thinking ahead. I wanted to see if you had similar plans. If so, maybe we could work together in the future."Going against the Hardwells alone was definitely impossi

Mr. Hull Senior questioned incredulously. His butler, who had been by his side for decades, lowered his head respectfully and answered, "Yes."Mr. Hull Senior scoffed. "What kind of judgment does he have? It's no wonder he doesn't measure up to his uncle."Noah might be excellent, but at his age, William had already built up the Ashfords into the wealthiest family in Redwood. In terms of cunning or any other aspect, he was still far behind William. The loyal butler remained silent as he respectfully stood off to the side."If anyone else was still left in this family, I'd never even consider passing it to Noah!"
