Chapter 2

Author: Flowers and Beyond
The sound of footsteps from upstairs pulled me out of my painful memories.

I looked up instinctively and saw Zoey coming down the stairs, beautifully dressed with exquisite makeup.

Even after being rejected so many times, whenever I saw her again, my heart still leapt out of habit.

But when I raised my head and met her indifferent, scrutinizing gaze, my heart trembled and my voice caught on the spot.

Her eyes were as cold as those of a stranger...

She only glanced at me, ignored me, and was about to leave the house.

But it was already close to midnight.

My chest felt unbearably tight, and I couldn’t help calling out to her.

“Zoey, it’s late. Where are you going?”

Without stopping, Zoey replied coldly, “Cameron asked me out for a late-night meal. I won’t be coming back tonight.”

Her casual words struck my heart like thunder.

The Zoey of the past would never have spoken to me like that.

She knew I had lost my entire family overnight and didn’t like being left alone at home, so she never left me at home by myself for even one night.

Even when she had academic work or business trips, she would return the same day—no matter how rushed or late it was—because she wanted to be home to watch over me.

The reason was simple: she was afraid I wouldn’t sleep well or that my nerves would act up when I was alone.

Over the years, she hadn’t spent even a single night away from home.

But everything changed after that impulsive moment at my coming-of-age ceremony.

Zoey became distant, began traveling frequently, staying away for at least a week each time. Even during the rare moments when she was at home, she intentionally kept her distance.

She no longer worried about my sleeplessness or nervousness, no longer cared about me in the slightest, and personally extinguished the faint light in my heart.

And ever since Cameron appeared, Zoey had gone even further, treating me as nothing more than a stranger...

I understood her intentions clearly, and the pain was unbearable.

I had tried to win her back, but she ignored it all and only grew more distant.

Now, I was completely helpless.

I lifted my stiff hand and straightened my clothes, then suddenly called out to her at the door.

“Zoey, I want to stay at a classmate’s place for a couple of days.”

Zoey’s hand paused slightly on the doorknob in faint surprise, but she soon recovered and opened the door.

“Do whatever you want. No one’s stopping you.”

She left without looking back, and the heavy thud of the closing door slammed hard against my heart.

My eyes burned with bitterness. I silently stood up, went back to my room, and began packing my luggage.

This room was the largest master bedroom in the Shaw family’s villa. A huge French window, tasteful and stylish furniture—every detail had been designed with painstaking care by Zoey.

Once, this had been her bedroom, yet she gave it to me without hesitation and gently patted my head.

“Sam, you’re the best younger brother in the world, so of course you deserve the best room. When you stand by the French window, you’ll be able to see me returning the moment I come home. That way, you won’t be afraid anymore...”

The memories were dreamlike in their beauty, but reality was so cruel I could hardly breathe.

Now I stood before that window, watching with my own eyes as she walked away, heading toward another man.

I finally understood that her partiality no longer belonged to me, and naturally, this room should be returned to her.

I was leaving, and this place belonged to the man in her heart.

I finished packing all my belongings, locked the door, and spent the night on the sofa.

The next morning, I booked a hotel and planned to store my luggage there before going to handle the procedures for my visa.

But at that moment, Zoey returned.

I glanced at her, no longer with the enthusiasm of the past—only a polite smile as I prepared to leave.

Zoey seemed unaccustomed to my distant demeanor. Seeing the many bags I carried, she frowned.

“Isn’t this a little too much luggage for just two days?”

I paused and said casually, “I just packed what I thought I need, but I didn’t expect there to be so much.”

Zoey stared at me for a long time, ultimately finding nothing wrong, and relaxed.

“You have a lot of luggage. I’ll give you a lift.”

Maybe it had been too long since I heard her offer to send me anywhere, and for a moment, I actually wanted to accept.

But when I remembered the news from last night, my heart sank, and I shook my head.

“No need. It’s Cameron’s birthday, isn’t it? I saw in the news that you spent millions on a diamond watch. He must be very happy to receive it!”

Zoey showed some surprise and instinctively explained, “That watch was something I gave to—”

Her words were cut off by footsteps outside the door.

Wearing a sharp suit and standing tall, Cameron walked in and gently held Zoey’s hand.

“Zoey, it’s my birthday. We should go.”

So it was true.

I forced a smile and quietly stepped aside.

Maybe because I was about to leave, seeing the two of them being affectionate caused little reaction in me—only a dull bitterness.

“Okay, let’s go.”

Zoey responded softly to Cameron and didn’t explain anything to me. She merely looked back at me calmly.

“Come with us. We’ll drop you off on the way.”

“Thank you, Zoey.”

Looking at the perfectly matched pair, I felt a moment of dazedness and forced myself to smile.

This time, perhaps it would be our last time seeing each other.

‘Thank you for sending me off on my final journey, Zoey.’

Cameron nodded. Before leaving, the two of them even shared a passionate kiss right in front of me, and only then did he walk out."They were just drafts. Try to see if you can recover them. If not, then let it go. They aren’t anything important. Stay at home. Cancel the lease on that place. You're not going back.""I'm going out to eat with Cameron. I’ll bring whatever you want back for you."Zoey instructed me calmly and then stepped forward, ready to leave.I couldn't believe this was the way she chose to handle the situation.Just like that?"Zoey, wait."I stopped her, my chest feeling as though a huge stone were wedged inside, making it hard to breathe."Cameron obviously stole my drafts—why won’t you believe me? You clearly know this was his fault—this time, the last time, and the time before! Those are my work. What right do you have to decide if it's important or not?"Faced with my suffocated, aggrieved questioning, Zoey still remained calm."Cameron is my fiance.

"What were you standing at the door for? Sam, did you quarrel with your sister-in-law?"When Cameron walked in and saw that both Zoey and I looked upset, he naturally guessed what had happened."You’ve stepped over the line, Sam. Your sister-in-law had raised you with such hardship and care. No matter what happened, you shouldn't have quarreled with her. Zoey, babe, don't be angry. I’ll coax you later."I couldn't be bothered with Cameron's tone, which was laced with gloating, and I liked even less hearing him talking as if he was already Zoey’s husband.I reached out and snatched my laptop back."Give it back! You didn't touch anything inside, did you?"I turned on the laptop to check as I stared at Cameron suspiciously."What did you mean by that? I just borrowed your laptop to check its performance. Why would I touch your things?"Cameron frowned as well."See? I told you Cameron wouldn't touch your things. You're just too sensitive."Zoey breathed a sigh of relief.Altho

But no one mentioned how he had bullied me day after day; I only acted because I had reached my limit.Later, I was punished to stand in the hallway for an entire day, and after school the form tutor notified Zoey to come and compensate the other child. It was the first time I did not dare look into Zoey's eyes—I knew I had made a mistake and caused her enormous trouble. But she neither hit nor scolded me; instead, she shielded me firmly behind her and believed in me without hesitation."Sam would never hit someone for no reason. He must have bullied our Sam and done something really bad! We can pay. The Shaw family is not short of money. But please go home and warn your child—if he dares bully Sam again, then we’ll hit him once for every time he bullies Sam in the future. It's fine if he ends up in the hospital each time. I'll still be able to cover all his medical bills!"Her unyielding stance left the other parent speechless, because they knew full well what kind of child they

Zoey stared at me, as if her gaze could see straight through my heart.I trembled inwardly, but I steadied myself quickly."Yes, I only see you as my sister-in-law.""Then why did you keep calling my name after you blacked out last night, and why were you confessing to me?"Had I lost control again in front of her after getting drunk?Faced with her questioning, I was speechless and lowered my head."I don’t remember...""I knew you would give me that excuse. Sam, I’m really disappointed in you!"Her tone suddenly turned icy, enough to make anyone's heart tremble."When will you finally grow up a little? I've told you countless times—there’s no way that we’ll be together. I will always be your sister-in-law.""I know, Zoey. I truly do. I’ve already started letting go and living a new life," I explained sincerely, but all I received was her mocking, disdainful laugh."Sam, do you think I can't tell? This so-called new life of yours—you gave me money, pretended to leave withou

"Zoey, the former Sam had already grown up and no longer wanted to be controlled by you."I met Zoey's gaze. Her expression grew complicated, as if she felt sad, but I no longer cared. I calmly looked away, forced a smile on my face, and clinked glasses with Jane.Inside the private room, the small episode between me and Zoey went unnoticed by everyone.Due to the "male lead" of the story being present, the crowd was coaxing the two of them to recreate the scene from back then. The next moment, Cameron suddenly knelt on one knee, took a delicate jewelry box from his pocket, and held it out toward Zoey."Zoey, it had been so long, yet I didn't expect you still remembered. I know you’re reminding me that I should buy you another ring, so I already bought one in advance. And this one is a proposal ring."Cameron opened the box, revealing the sparkling diamond ring inside. He spoke with deep affection and proposed on the spot, "Zoey, will you marry me?"The room instantly erupted i

  • Love and Emptiness   Chapter 25

"When I saw him, he was completely disheveled, like a drowned rat, but even so, his eyes were still filled with joy when he looked at me. At that moment, my heart ached, and I couldn't help but hold him. We leaned against each other while hiding from the rain. He suddenly told me he had a surprise for me. I was wondering what it was when he suddenly knelt on one knee and took out a ring from his pocket. At the time, he was soaked from head to toe, yet the ring was somehow dry. I was shocked and laughed, calling him an idiot—after all, a ring didn't fear the rain. But he smiled back and told me that while the ring could get wet, his love could not."Everyone listened intently. My lips trembled, and my eyes gradually became wet.But the next second, Zoey's gaze, full of affection, turned to Cameron beside her."That person was Cameron. We confirmed our relationship that very night. That was my most unforgettable moment."As soon as her voice fell, the room filled with admiration.Bu
