Chapter 3

Author: Cammy Winslow
Suddenly, Juniper grabbed my wrist and jerked me back toward her before locking herself in my embrace.

She was clinging tightly to my waist and soon started to sob into my shirt.

“Malik, why does it feel like you’re drifting away even though you’re back here by my side?”

She pressed her face against my neck while she whimpered.

“I… let’s have a child together. I don’t care if it’s a son or a daughter as long as it means you won’t leave!”

I kept my eyes downcast the entire time and was unmoved by the proposal.

When she looked at me, a trace of panic shone in her eyes.

At one point, we were expecting a child.

Around the same time, Frederick got sick and needed a blood transfusion. When that happened, she aborted my child without a second thought so she could donate blood to him.

I was heartbroken when it happened and ended up getting very sick, but that did not stop my parents from sticking by Frederick's side the entire time.

When it happened, all Juniper did was dismiss me.

“Malik, we’re still young, and there are plenty more chances for us to have children later on. Just make sure you take care of your body!

“Anyway, I’m going to see Frederick. See you!”

I did not see her again until I was discharged from the hospital.

When memories from the past came rushing back to me, I realized I had been numb for a while now.

I could still smell Frederick on her. His scent wormed into my nose like a snake.

It made me want to throw up. I turned away from her and ended up dry retching.

She froze instantly and slowly pulled away from me.

“What’s wrong? Do you need to go to the hospital?”

I did not respond, letting a harrowing silence descend upon the room.

“I… Jeremiah was just an accident.

“I thought about getting an abortion, but… the doctor told me this might be the only child Frederick will ever have!”

I nodded and remarked faintly, “Alright, I believe you.”

I paused briefly before looking at her again.

“I’m not feeling well. Why don’t you spend more time with him?”

She was enraged by my suggestion, evident by how her complexion turned pale.

When she caught a glimpse of my luggage out of the corner of her eye, she cried out, “You’re not planning to run away again, are you?

“You’d better think about what’s going to happen to Madame Curie. Are you sure you can handle the consequences?”

All I did was smile faintly.

“I’m not leaving…”

Suddenly, the door was flung open.

It was my mother storming in.

“Malik, why did you put peanuts in Frederick's and the boy’s milk! You should know he’s allergic to peanuts!”

I made eye contact with her and protested, “I did not do it!”

“Don’t even bother trying to deny it. The maid said you were the one who prepared the milk!”

Then, my father stepped up and slapped me across the face.

I could feel my cheek burning.

“You brute! Where's your manners? How low will you stoop just because you want to hoard the family inheritance for yourself?!”

Meanwhile, Frederick looked on with a frail look on his face.

“Maybe he didn’t do it on purpose…

“Even if he did, I understand why he wouldn’t accept my son and me…”

Then, he suddenly turned as white as a sheet.

“It hurts so much, my stomach…”

Jeremiah was crying for his mother as well, adding to the chaos.

Juniper panicked instantly, scooping Jeremiah into her arms while grabbing Frederick’s arm.

“Don't worry, Frederick, I’ve got you both.

“You forgot that we're taking him to the concert! We’re going to be the coolest family in attendance!”

I felt like my feelings had gone numb to the point where I did not feel pain anymore.

Like I was the only person in the room, despite being surrounded by people. When I felt the throbbing pain in my cheek, it occurred to me that perhaps I should cry.

Then, my phone rang.

It was my assistant calling.

“Sir, the tickets are booked, and the contract with Stehnbart Corporation has been finalized. You have my word that you and Madame Curie will be arriving at Senbald City in three days.”

My fingers shook at the thought that I would finally get to leave them for good.

As soon as I hung up, I received another call from the caregiver whose voice was frantic.

“Mr. Brenhart, it’s a disaster! Madame Curie’s condition has taken a turn for the worse! All the doctors in the ICU have been transferred to another hospital, so there are none available right now!”

I dismissed all her feeble explanations with a disinterested shrug.“Forget about all that.“I have spent enough time looking for assurance in other people. I longed for you to be true to me, I longed for my parents’ sympathies. It was only toward the end that I realized that the affection from people is all smoke and mirrors, and that it can be taken away at any moment.“From now on, I will live only for myself. I can give myself all the assurance I need.“We are through. There are no longer any ties between us.”My glacial and persistent denial of her had shattered what little confidence she had left right before my eyes. She was dumbstruck. All she could do was stare blankly as I walked away, for she was afraid to chase after me.Shortly after that, I ran into Frederick, who had gone mad.“Malik! Why did you have to come back? You ruined everything! You took my lover and family, you took it all from me!”I regarded him with a dismissive look. Bickering with a madman was the

Frederick’s shocking confession sent chills through my parents.Looking at his twisted expression, it suddenly occurred to them how absurd the situation was. This was the person they had repeatedly mistreated their birth son for. They were the ones who had willingly pushed their own son over the edge.My mother’s voice was trembling to the point of breaking.“What have we done.. We doted on you for the last decade, only for you to turn out to be so evil! Where is your humanity?“I must have been blind to not see it this entire time! I let Malik down!“I treated an evil man like this as if he were my own son while ignoring my birth son until he was left with no choice but to leave!”My father's eyes were red too.“When Malik tried to explain what was happening, we didn't even believe him! I even hit him!"For the last decade, they had favored and adored Frederick while neglecting me. All of that affection had been all for nothing.Juniper could not bear it anymore and slapped

“Honey... the doctor said... Malik was depressed...“We never realized our son needed help all along!”They once believed that giving their son a life of luxury and respectable status was the equivalent of loving him.Juniper, who had been listening in, could no longer hold back. She slid down the wall, collapsing onto the floor as she wept, “It was me who ruined him... I destroyed him...“I swore I would be with him forever, but in the end, I was the source of his pain. I was the reason he had to go through everything he did.“I betrayed him even though he was so devoted to me... I let him down...”She could not believe she had driven away the man who was devoted to her. Now, he was gone for good.My mother could no longer hold back either. Her knees buckled, and she began to bawl uncontrollably. In an act of despair, she struck her chest furiously and slapped herself across the face relentlessly. She was disgusted by how foolish and cruel she had been.“I was wrong... Malik

The sharp, decisive sound of the call being disconnected sent a chill through Juniper’s heart. She refused to accept that it was over between us and repeatedly called the number. She pleaded sincerely to the point of desperation.“Malik, I was wrong. Would you come see me again?”“We should talk face to face. I promise you I will change. I will change for you...”Despite all her pleas, all she received in return was the disaffected sound of the phone’s monotonous beep.I was in a city thousands of miles away from her and had blocked her number. From now on, I was no longer Mr. Brenhart.I was just myself.I accepted the job offer from Stehnbart Corporation to become their technical consultant. The new job marked the beginning of a fresh chapter in my life.Meanwhile, back home, Juniper was trapped in an endless cycle of self-sabotage.She had all of Frederick’s renovations torn down and had them restored to their original state. She recreated my former decoration based on

My mother scoffed, a sneer clear in her voice, “As if Malik has any patented technology and shares to sign away in the first place! I’m sure he’s hoping we won’t call him out on his bluff. I’m not buying it!”They never had much faith in what I was capable of.Little did they know, I had put in a lot of work over the past years. The assistant paused for a moment upon hearing the flagrant accusation before correcting her.“He is a guest professor at a top university and is very well respected in the field of technology innovation.“We were going to open a contract with him previously, but he refused.“As it stands, he is the only person who holds the patent to the key gadget responsible for the success of Carlsen Corporation!”Upon hearing this, my parents were stunned with shock. They almost could not believe what they were hearing. They had never imagined the son they had written off as an incompetent imp would reach such heights.Juniper was panicking. Her fingers were shaki

I turned cold in an instant and charged out of the room like a madman to get to the hospital immediately. When I got to the gate, I found several bodyguards standing in my path, stopping me from leaving.“Get out of the way. I need to go to the hospital!”“Sir, I’m sorry, we cannot let you out until we receive permission from Ms. Carlsen!”My head was throbbing. I dialed Juniper’s number with my hands shaking the entire time.“Juniper, my mother is sick and needs emergency medical care!”She paused briefly on the other end of the line before saying icily, “Malik, nobody is going to believe the same lie again.“Be good, won’t you? Frederick and Jeremiah are being attended to in the hospital now. I promise you I’ll have your Madame Curie attended to once their condition stabilizes.“Besides, haven’t I told you I already have someone attending to her in the hospital? Her condition is fine.”My throat was turning parched. I could not hold back my tears anymore.“Juniper, please b
