Chapter 2

作者: Cammy Winslow
Frederick stepped into my room before I was even done packing.

“Malik, I don’t know how to feel about the decor inside the house…”

Upon hearing this, I immediately reached for the card Juniper had given me.

“Go ahead and have it renovated to your liking. Once I’m done packing, you can move into the master bedroom with your son.”

Frederick paused for a moment, then offered a quick smile.

“No need for that. I don’t mind sleeping in my current room!”

In the past, Juniper always made a point of reserving a room in the house for him even though we had plenty of other residences.

Over time, jealousy had gotten to me, and I ended up lashing out a few times.

“Juniper, this is my house…”

Every time, she brushed me off with the same reply.

“Frederick is my childhood friend. I can’t make him feel like he’s being cast aside just because of you!”

Even my parents expressed the same sentiment.

I was their child and Juniper’s lawful husband to boot.

Yet, I was always the one who had to bend over backward for him!

With this in mind, I smiled and persuaded Frederick again.

“The master bedroom gets lots of sunlight. A young boy needs plenty of sunshine!”

Suddenly, my mother showed up out of nowhere and took my hand. For once, she was smiling at me.

“Malik, I’m glad you’ve grown into such a mature and understanding man!”

In the last decade since my return to the family, this was the first time she had praised me at all.

As far as she was concerned, I had always been a lowly and crude man who would never be worthy of glory.

I could not compare to her soft-spoken and sensible Frederick.

One time, she gave me a stern scolding just because I accidentally wore Frederick’s shirt.

“How dare you steal his clothes when he hardly has anything to himself to begin with?”

It would be laughable if it wasn’t so heartbreaking.

A few days later, a friend of mine came to visit when he heard of my return.

As soon as he showed up, he became incensed and felt like he had to speak up to defend my rights.

“Malik, this is your house! What right does Frederick have to claim what is yours?”

All I could do was shake my head. There was hardly a trace of disturbance in my eyes.

“It’s just some renovations. He can do whatever he likes.”

I was going to leave with my adoptive mother soon enough anyway.

That was when Juniper returned.

The moment Frederick saw her, he rushed to her and embraced her happily while crying out, “Juniper… Look! I had the house renovated into the home we dreamed of when we were kids. Do you like it?

“Malik not only gave me the master bedroom, but he even had his study torn down so I could build a nursery!

“But there’s one thing… I’m not sure what to do with this painting .”

He was referring to the painting Juniper had spent a month laboriously painting for me.

Before Juniper could respond, I remarked candidly.

“I’m not sure if there’s enough room in the storage for it. Go ahead and burn it if there’s not enough space for it.”

Juniper went pale.

She pushed away Frederick’s hand and came up to me with her eyes wide and rimmed with tears.

“I drew the painting for you. Every stroke counted for something... Why would you want to burn it?

“Malik, do my feelings not mean anything to you?

“What will it take for you to forgive me?”

She may say so, but she had religiously hand-drawn a painting for Frederick every year on his birthday.

It was only after rounds of pleading from me that she finally did something to appease me.

“Fine, I’ll paint something for you once I’m done with my current painting!”

I protested then, “You always have time to paint for Frederick, but not for me!”

She cuddled in my arms and told me matter-of-factly, “When we were kids, I promised him I would paint for him until I was old and gray!”

The painting, which I had treasured for so long, was merely a discarded draft meant for Frederick, which she had touched up briefly before calling it quits.

I suppressed the bitterness welling up inside me and stated bluntly, “The boy is still young. You should be prioritizing Frederick and the boy.

“He cannot be without his mother. From now on, you should sleep with them in the master bedroom!”

Juniper was flabbergasted by my response. When she spoke, her voice contained a hint of ridicule.

“Fine! Then so be it! I did promise you that I would do whatever you told me to do!”

With that, I turned and walked to the guest room.

I dismissed all her feeble explanations with a disinterested shrug.“Forget about all that.“I have spent enough time looking for assurance in other people. I longed for you to be true to me, I longed for my parents’ sympathies. It was only toward the end that I realized that the affection from people is all smoke and mirrors, and that it can be taken away at any moment.“From now on, I will live only for myself. I can give myself all the assurance I need.“We are through. There are no longer any ties between us.”My glacial and persistent denial of her had shattered what little confidence she had left right before my eyes. She was dumbstruck. All she could do was stare blankly as I walked away, for she was afraid to chase after me.Shortly after that, I ran into Frederick, who had gone mad.“Malik! Why did you have to come back? You ruined everything! You took my lover and family, you took it all from me!”I regarded him with a dismissive look. Bickering with a madman was the

Frederick’s shocking confession sent chills through my parents.Looking at his twisted expression, it suddenly occurred to them how absurd the situation was. This was the person they had repeatedly mistreated their birth son for. They were the ones who had willingly pushed their own son over the edge.My mother’s voice was trembling to the point of breaking.“What have we done.. We doted on you for the last decade, only for you to turn out to be so evil! Where is your humanity?“I must have been blind to not see it this entire time! I let Malik down!“I treated an evil man like this as if he were my own son while ignoring my birth son until he was left with no choice but to leave!”My father's eyes were red too.“When Malik tried to explain what was happening, we didn't even believe him! I even hit him!"For the last decade, they had favored and adored Frederick while neglecting me. All of that affection had been all for nothing.Juniper could not bear it anymore and slapped

“Honey... the doctor said... Malik was depressed...“We never realized our son needed help all along!”They once believed that giving their son a life of luxury and respectable status was the equivalent of loving him.Juniper, who had been listening in, could no longer hold back. She slid down the wall, collapsing onto the floor as she wept, “It was me who ruined him... I destroyed him...“I swore I would be with him forever, but in the end, I was the source of his pain. I was the reason he had to go through everything he did.“I betrayed him even though he was so devoted to me... I let him down...”She could not believe she had driven away the man who was devoted to her. Now, he was gone for good.My mother could no longer hold back either. Her knees buckled, and she began to bawl uncontrollably. In an act of despair, she struck her chest furiously and slapped herself across the face relentlessly. She was disgusted by how foolish and cruel she had been.“I was wrong... Malik

The sharp, decisive sound of the call being disconnected sent a chill through Juniper’s heart. She refused to accept that it was over between us and repeatedly called the number. She pleaded sincerely to the point of desperation.“Malik, I was wrong. Would you come see me again?”“We should talk face to face. I promise you I will change. I will change for you...”Despite all her pleas, all she received in return was the disaffected sound of the phone’s monotonous beep.I was in a city thousands of miles away from her and had blocked her number. From now on, I was no longer Mr. Brenhart.I was just myself.I accepted the job offer from Stehnbart Corporation to become their technical consultant. The new job marked the beginning of a fresh chapter in my life.Meanwhile, back home, Juniper was trapped in an endless cycle of self-sabotage.She had all of Frederick’s renovations torn down and had them restored to their original state. She recreated my former decoration based on

My mother scoffed, a sneer clear in her voice, “As if Malik has any patented technology and shares to sign away in the first place! I’m sure he’s hoping we won’t call him out on his bluff. I’m not buying it!”They never had much faith in what I was capable of.Little did they know, I had put in a lot of work over the past years. The assistant paused for a moment upon hearing the flagrant accusation before correcting her.“He is a guest professor at a top university and is very well respected in the field of technology innovation.“We were going to open a contract with him previously, but he refused.“As it stands, he is the only person who holds the patent to the key gadget responsible for the success of Carlsen Corporation!”Upon hearing this, my parents were stunned with shock. They almost could not believe what they were hearing. They had never imagined the son they had written off as an incompetent imp would reach such heights.Juniper was panicking. Her fingers were shaki

I turned cold in an instant and charged out of the room like a madman to get to the hospital immediately. When I got to the gate, I found several bodyguards standing in my path, stopping me from leaving.“Get out of the way. I need to go to the hospital!”“Sir, I’m sorry, we cannot let you out until we receive permission from Ms. Carlsen!”My head was throbbing. I dialed Juniper’s number with my hands shaking the entire time.“Juniper, my mother is sick and needs emergency medical care!”She paused briefly on the other end of the line before saying icily, “Malik, nobody is going to believe the same lie again.“Be good, won’t you? Frederick and Jeremiah are being attended to in the hospital now. I promise you I’ll have your Madame Curie attended to once their condition stabilizes.“Besides, haven’t I told you I already have someone attending to her in the hospital? Her condition is fine.”My throat was turning parched. I could not hold back my tears anymore.“Juniper, please b
