The ride back home was uncomfortably quiet.

I sat in the passenger seat, staring out of the window. I'd stopped crying a while ago, but my chest still felt heavy.

I could feel Mr. Jacobs stealing glances at me from the driver’s seat.

I pulled out my phone to check my reflection. The Mia staring back at me was a complete mess. My eyes were puffy and red and my mascara had smudged.

“Here you go,” Mr. Jacobs said, passing me a white handkerchief.

“Thank you.” I took the handkerchief without lookin

We sprang apart immediately, causing me to stumble backwards a little.“I just… I tripped, and Dom… I mean, Mr. Jacobs, was kind enough to catch me,” I said, quickly straightening my dress and smoothing down the fabric as though that would somehow erase what she'd just witnessed. Her gaze moved from me to Dominic, then back to me.“Is that so?” “Yes! Absolutely,” I said quickly.A little too quickly at that.I turned to Dominic and widened my eyes, silently begging him to play along. But the man only stood there, one brow raised, looking far too amused for my liking.Traitor.“Hmm,” Donna murmured, looking between us.‘Dominic? A word, please?”Dominic glanced at me, a smile playing on his lips. He leaned down to my face and whispered, “See you later, Mia.” I caught Donna’s raised eyebrow from the corner of my eye. Her lips pressed into a thin line, and she gave Dominic a look I couldn't quite decipher.Shameless. Absolutely shameless. How could he do that in front of Donna?I ins

Have you ever had a moment when everything suddenly made sense, but somehow, it only made things worse?Well, that was exactly what was happening to me.The man descending the stairs wasn't just Mr. Jacobs. He was Dominic Jacobs.Donna’s son.Ethan’s elusive uncle.Suddenly, his familiarity with the Vance family and the things he knew that he shouldn't, all made sense. He made his way to the stage and stood next to Donna. He smiled at the crowd but his eyes seemed to be searching for something.Or rather…Someone. His eyes landed on me and I could swear I saw his smile darken. We locked eyes for a brief moment, neither of us looking away. Then he mouthed…“Found you.”I quickly turned and made my way out of the hall. I needed air.A lot of it.Once outside, my mind immediately began racing through all our encounters and conversations. That means…I gasped. “I had a one-night stand with Ethan’s uncle.”“And stripped him bare.”“Right, and stripped him bare,” I repeated after the voice

I stared. He stared. And I couldn't seem to remember how to breathe.Have you ever wished the ground would open up and swallow you whole?Because I was desperately wishing for that.“Have you seen enough, or do you want a picture for remembrance?”His deep, amused voice snapped me out of my thoughts. My eyes immediately darted away from his body. “I wasn't looking.”“Sure you weren't.” I shot him a glare, but that only made things worse when my eyes wandered back to his body.He was annoyingly good-looking. Tall with broad shoulders, a well-defined chest, and abs that looked like they belonged on the cover of a fitness magazine. His damp hair was slightly tousled and water droplets glistened against his skin.I quickly looked away.Good Lord.Of all the people I could have walked in on, why did it have to be someone who looked like that? And most importantly…Why did it have to be him?Mr. Jacobs looked down at me, holding out his hand.“Thank you,” I said, taking his hand, but he pu

  • Love and Secrets   Chapter 15

The moment we pulled into the driveway, I was greeted by a spectacular sight. Vance Estate was illuminated by hundreds of lights, casting a warm glow over the gardens. Luxury cars lined the circular driveway.Beyond the grand entrance, I could hear the faint melody of a live orchestra. The Vance family had certainly spared no expense.Having been to countless elite parties in my life, I still couldn't get used to the luxurious ambiance of a Vance party.“We’re here ma’am,” the driver announced as the car came to a stop.I could see Ethan waiting at the entrance. He wore a black tuxedo that screamed billions paired with black sunglasses to hide his bruised eye.I stepped out of the car with Layla as he made his way over to us.“Daddy,” Layla squealed, running to meet him halfway. I stood beside the car, adjusting my dress, as he walked up to me with Layla in his arms.“Let's go,” he said, holding out his arm to me.I stared at his outstretched arm for a moment. I couldn't imagine pla

Before everything fell apart, I spent my Friday mornings baking and designing for Ethan and Layla. But today, I was spending my morning seated in the living room with a cup of hot chocolate in hand, staring alternately at the lipstick I found in Layla’s room and the Hello Kitty scrunchie in the picture. How did the lipstick get into Layla’s room? How did Ethan’s mistress get Layla’s scrunchie?“Good morning, Mummy,” Layla said, walking towards me.“Hi, sweetie,” I said, pulling her onto my lap.“Lala, you've missed school a lot this week and that's not good,” I said, tapping the tip of her nose. She turned to face me, confusion written on her face.“Holiday, Mummy,” she said.“Holiday?” “You forgot Mummy.” She crossed her arms and pouted.Oh, Lala. It's worse than forgetting. I wasn't even aware.I've been so caught up in my own problems that I hadn't even noticed how uninvolved I'd become in Layla’s school life.I sighed, “Mummy has been too busy, baby. Forgive me?”She shook her h
