Simon

Marriage seemed like a good idea. I didn’t think it hasty considering I’ve known her for six months. She was the right woman for me, I could feel it in my gut and I desperately wanted to touch her. I’ve been with so many women but never have I been eager to be with anyone as I was with her. If my rising libido was the push I needed to abandon my fears and marry the only woman who understood me beyond my success or wealth, then now was the perfect time to seal the deal forever.

“Let’s get married,” I said again, with more confidence.

“I heard you the first time. You don’t know what you’re saying,” she said, pulling away from under me and standing up. “You should leave,” she added, sounding a bit upset.

“Lily, I meant what I said.”

“That’s crazy. Do you want to get married for sex? Can you hear yourself? There’s so much more to marriage, and the fact that you demean it like that—and even me. What, you thought I’d jump at the idea and swing my legs wide open for you because you promised to marry me?” She scoffed.

“I know what it looks like. I’m not even going to lie, I want you…But, I don’t want to marry you only for sex. Believe me, I know what marriage means.” I ran my hand through my hair. “Isn’t that supposed to be our plan eventually? I’m only bringing it forward. You’re good for me. You have the purest heart I’ve known since my mother. I have fallen for you, and every day I find my affection for you stronger than the last. I can’t stand the thought of another man taking you away from me. You love me for me, Simon, I can’t say the same for any other woman out there. I have thought of no one else since we met. I have been with no one else. My affection for you has consumed my every waking moment. I want it all with you. I lost my family, and I want to build a new one with you. I want it all—partnership with you, watching you become the successful financial analyst I know you’ll be and having a part in it, children playing on the carpet.” I let out an unbelievable laugh. “I couldn’t believe I was the one saying all of this. I had fallen hard for you. You’re not a woman I want to play with, you’re the woman I want to marry. And if you have even one reason to be with me…then marry me,” I said, kneeling before her.

I could see the tears swelling under her eyes, rolling down her cheeks.

“In the time I have known you, as the boss and a man, you’ve thrived at both. You care about your employees. One time, I watched you give one of the cleaning ladies a day off when she was having a bad day. I noticed she was away from work for weeks. When she got back, I spoke to her. I asked her why she was absent and that’s when she told me you personally paid for her daughter’s surgery and all her medical expenses until she got back home, and she still got paid for the time she was absent. You didn’t take a dime from her. Most of the staff have similar stories where you make out-of-pocket expenses for them. I don’t love you because of some idea of you or because you’re cute—though you are cute and incredibly hot,” she said, chuckling, and I chuckled too.

“I love you for who you are, a good man, and there’s not much of you out there. I wondered sometimes that if you’d help people who are down or strangers, how much more would you do for the ones you love?” She stared at me. “Getting close to you, I felt your care, attention, and devotion to me whenever we worked together. You paid for every meal I ate the entire time, you taught me the ropes of your business, and you respected me. At first, I was crushing on your cuteness and career success, but as I knew more of you, I couldn’t help but fall in love with you. Thinking you didn’t feel the same way was terrible because I felt something good was going to someone else and not me.”

She smiled. “I can find more than one reason to marry you. My answer is yes,” she said.

I swooped her into my arms excitedly, swirling her around as I locked my lips onto hers.

“But it’s not that simple though. What about my parents, your father? Our different beliefs,” she said, as if it was too much.

“You’re my family now,” I said, rubbing my thumb on her lips. “I haven’t thought far about it. I only know I want to marry you with different beliefs or not.”

“It’s not that simple. I’m a Christian, but you don’t believe in God. I don’t think it’d work.”

“I remember my mother taking me to church on Sundays as a little boy, but that stopped when she died. My lack of belief is due to my lack of knowledge of Him. I hold nothing against your God.”

“I get it. My father taught me about God, and when I grew, I got to know Him for myself, but I wonder if my spirituality and your indifference would be problematic in our future.”

“Then let your God be mine. I’d rather not let anything come between us in the future.”

She smiled as I captured her lips in mine again, unwilling to let her go.

“Have a good night’s rest, my Lily,” I said as I slowly released her. “I’ll come tomorrow evening after work. Wait for me.”

“I’ll count the hours,” she said, walking me to the door. “Good night, Si.”

As she shut the door, I felt a rush of happiness within me. It was set. I was going to marry the woman I loved.

Lily“Thomas, let’s talk things through,” I said, following him as he dashed down the stairs. “Please… wait.”He ignored me, moving even faster until he reached the door, swung it open, and headed for his car.“Thomas, where are you going? I don’t think you should drive like this—you’re upset.”My words fell on deaf ears as he got into his car and sped off. I pulled a chunk of hair away from my face, feeling upset. How could he just leave like that? Maybe it’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have mentioned Simon. I should have met Tom for lunch at work and come straight home afterward. I messed up. I can’t really blame him.I turned around to head back inside and saw Lizzy. She looked at me with judgmental eyes, like I’d done something wrong. She had caught Simon and me kissing in the garden, and now she must think I’m a bad wife, cheating on Tom with his brother.“Are you okay, Mrs. Lily?” she managed to ask, looking at me with concern.“I’ll be fine, Lizzy,” I muttered as I rushed back in

Lily “Tom,” I stammered, unsure of how to explain. I wasn’t sure if Thomas was going to believe anything I said, but I had to try.“With Simon, I presume,” Thomas spat, barely containing his rage. He was furious. The thought of Simon and me together clearly irked him. Maybe it was jealousy, or the fact that a part of him knew Simon and I had something beyond a normal friendship.“Yes. We worked together,” I replied, trying to stay calm, though his anger made it hard to breathe. He moved closer, his eyes locked on mine, filled with an intensity that made my stomach twist in fear. “Didn’t I tell you not to work with Simon?” he repeated, his voice rising.“I know you did,” I began, my voice shaky. “But I told you, I couldn’t just not show up. I need to speak to Geoffrey first.”“Then what are you waiting for?” he shouted, slamming the bathroom door behind me. I flinched, my body reacting to the sudden noise. My heart pounded in my chest. He stepped closer, pointing a finger at me. “Lily

Lily Simon’s gaze was fixed on me. “Answer the call, Lily, or Tom will get even more suspicious.”I reluctantly picked up the phone. Before I could even say hello, Thomas’s voice blared through the speaker. “I don’t care what the hell you’re doing, I want you home now!” The call abruptly ended, leaving me staring at my phone in shock. For a few seconds, I was stunned. I hadn’t expected that reaction. My heart raced, not from fear of him, but from the relief that he wasn’t here. If Tom had found Simon and me having dinner together, especially after I refused to go home with him, it would have been a disaster. I exhaled slowly, thankful I didn’t have to face that mess. But now I had another problem—Simon’s eyes were locked on me.“What did he say?” Simon asked, curious.“He wants me home,” I muttered, pushing my chair back, ready to leave.“Wait.” Simon reached for my hand, and when his fingers wrapped around mine, a spark shot through me. I froze, my hand still under his warm grasp. I

Lily“I don’t know what you mean,” I said, my voice firmer than before.“Your coldness toward me seems more personal than professional.”Simon didn’t immediately respond, but his gaze remained on me, making the silence stretch longer than I was comfortable with. I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was pushing my buttons on purpose, though I didn’t have the energy to figure out why.“Look, Simon, I’m already having a pretty bad day. Please don’t make it any worse,” I continued, exhaling deeply. My hands tightened around the paper in front of me. I braced myself for a sarcastic response or some come back, but instead, he just returned to his work, ignoring the tension. Maybe that was for the best. I wasn’t in the mood for an argument, even though I felt like I could bite his head off. He’s probably number two on my list of enemies, with Jessica holding the permanent top spot. I forced myself to concentrate again. Then, my phone beeped, pulling my attention away from the file. I glance

LilyJessica let out a cold, arrogant smile, her eyes narrowing. “Make sure you never forget what team you’re on,” she whispered, stepping back just enough to let me open the door again. Typical of Jessica, always giving me those condescending smiles and asking pointed questions about my marriage to Thomas, as if daring me to admit how miserable I was. It was exhausting. I felt trapped in a life I couldn’t escape.I rolled my eyes, refusing to let her words get under my skin. She always had a way of making me feel like I didn’t belong, like I was an outsider in my own marriage. But I wasn’t about to give her the satisfaction of seeing me rattled. Not today.I slid into the backseat of the car, slamming the door shut behind me, and glanced out the window as we pulled away. Jessica stood there for a moment longer, watching the car disappear down the road. I have no idea what she thinks I’ve done to her to make her detest me the way she does.As we drove toward the office, I couldn’t hel

LilyTom’s voice rang in my head all morning as I stood in front of the mirror, the black gown I had chosen laid across the bed. It was simple but elegant, the kind of dress I felt comfortable in. But of course, I was certain that It wouldn’t be good enough for Thomas.“I expect you to tell Simon today that you won’t be working with him,” he said, his tone intimidating as he paced across the room.“I have to inform Geoffrey first,” I replied calmly, knowing this conversation would go nowhere good. “I can’t just quit without speaking to him. He might feel disrespected if I stopped without saying anything.”Thomas scoffed, his eyes narrowing as they fell on the black dress. He crossed the room in a few long strides, eyeing the fabric like it offended him. “Wear a bright color.”I tensed, my fingers gripping the sides of the dressing table. “Thomas, this is what I want to wear. It’s fine.”His eyes flashed with irritation. “You should wear this instead,” he said, pulling out a bright red
