Chapter 8 Are You in a Rush?

Clarissa was anxious as her mother’s operation fees and hospital bills were not paid yet. Doctor Fisher mentioned that today was the last day.

The finance director, Howard Brooks, had yet to return from a meeting. Clarissa guessed that Damien was probably involved as well. In other words, now was not a good time to send him a message. She might even lose everything if he got angry.

Hence, Clarissa could only wait patiently.

It was past ten o’clock at night. Clarissa walked into the elevator wearily after working overtime. Coincidentally, Damien was inside that particular elevator.

She immediately became energized upon seeing him and stood at a corner.

Clarissa had kept the deposit question to herself for a long time.

Since there was nobody around, she mustered her courage and said, “President Lawrence?”

“Yes?” Damien replied casually while standing in front of Clarissa.

They did not sound like a married couple who already had sex before at all.

“If I remember correctly, it was written in the agreement that I’ll receive a deposit of 200 thousand dollars after signing the contract. The money…” Clarissa was quite embarrassed. After all, she was asking for money.

“It hasn’t been deposited to you yet?” Damien did not even bother to turn his head to look at Clarissa.

“Not yet.”

“Are you in a rush?”

Clarissa was speechless.

She felt extremely anxious. The day was almost coming to an end.

“I thought Attorney Kennedy had already settled that matter. Send me your card number.”

Damien spoke decisively. He did not dwell on his previous question.

His decisive attitude made Clarissa feel reassured. “I’ll give you my card number after getting on the bus.”

When they reached the first floor, Damien got off the elevator without saying another word.

There were not many people on the bus. Clarissa took out her bank card after getting on. Then, she snapped a picture and sent it to Damien. The card number could be seen clearly.

Shortly after, she received a transaction of two hundred thousand dollars.

Just as Clarissa was praising Damien for being quick, she received a message from him.

[ Stranger: If you were a little more diligent and had typed the numbers, the transaction would’ve been 30 seconds faster. ]

“...”

Did Damien imply that she was lazy?

Clarissa was worried this would affect her performance score in their marriage. Therefore, she immediately replied with an excuse.

[ Oh, there’s a reason for that, President Lawrence. Many people are on the bus right now, making typing inconvenient. ]

[ Stranger: You were in such a rush. Would the inconvenience have mattered?]

“...”

In the end, it was still about her eagerly wanting the money.

Clarissa was thinking of a reply. Before she could come up with one, Damien sent her another message

[ Stranger: Follow me to Florin. I’m visiting my grandfather this Saturday.]

[ For how many days? ]

[ Stranger: We’ll depart on Saturday morning, stay for a night, and return on Sunday. ]

In all honesty, Clarissa was more than happy to visit Damien’s grandfather. Ultimately, both her performance and salary depended entirely on him.

On Friday, Clarissa went to the hospital to visit her mother. The latter got a lot better after receiving an operation. Clarissa also told Doctor Fisher to hire a suitable caregiver as soon as possible in her stead.

At the same time, she met her brother at their mother’s ward. His whereabouts were always mysterious to her.

Luke lacked education and was incompetent. Recently, he was hired as a driver for a technology company’s boss. His driving skills were actually pretty good.

“Clarissa, why don’t I arrange a blind date for you?” Luke said while smiling.

Clarissa ignored him. Luke’s friends were probably indecent. Besides, she was already legally married. She could not have an affair and wronged Damien.

“No. I’m not interested at the moment. I’ll wait until mom recovers.”

Clarissa held her mother’s hand and placed it by her cheek.

Luke replied casually, “Wait until she recovers? That’ll be an eternity.”

Those words made Clarissa unhappy. She ignored him again.

“There were quite a number of people who tried to woo you in the past. Besides, who was that again…? He’s already dead. Are you going to stay single for the rest of your life for him?”

Luke only went to the ward to corner Clarissa. He rarely visited his mother.

Clarissa said sternly, “You’re not allowed to talk about him! You don’t have the right!”

Seeing that her expression had turned furious, Luke did not push further. That was his sister’s sad past. He was afraid of provoking her too.

After pausing for a moment, Luke said, “Okay, I won’t talk about him. Don’t be so agitated. By the way, the person I wanted to introduce is President Moore’s son. He’s a standard rich kid who is handsome and wealthy. Are you really not interested?”

Clarissa did not reply. She completely ignored Luke.

Luke became furious because of her stubborn attitude. “Clarissa, you should know your worth! You may be beautiful, but so are many other girls. Don’t think too highly of yourself! Mom’s hospital bills will just keep increasing. You don’t even think about it even though you’re her daughter. What a disgrace!”

Clarissa closed her eyes. She automatically filtered out Luke’s voice.

“What an ungrateful brat.”

Luke scolded and left.
