I was half asleep when someone unbuckled my seatbelt and lifted me into their arms. It felt like a dream, but I didn’t need to open my eyes to know who it was.

Still, I kept them closed. I didn’t want to ruin the warmth I was feeling. It was the first time he carried me like this.

He was changing. Not too much, but enough. The edges of his hard heart were starting to soften—and for me, that was more than enough. We’d finally started talking like normal people these past few days. Who would’ve thought? After all the fear I used to feel around him, this was progress.

I didn’t know how he managed to get inside the house while still carrying me, but the next thing I felt was a soft bed beneath my back. I opened my eyes just a little and saw Jazper Ray’s room. Then I shut them again, just as he pulled a blanket over me.
