Ilana had mentally prepared herself for all the questions she would ask Calix and the best way to phrase them so as to avoid raising suspicion.

She had dressed appropriately enough for a first date. At least that's what she kept telling herself.

She had worn a white turtleneck shirt that stopped a little below her knees and a black jacket over it. She had black tights and matching boots to go along.

Nothing too sluttry while also catching attention.

She'd thought of calling Alice to get a second opinion on what she should wear but then decided against it.

Calling Alice would have meant unnecessary conversation and she was saving her social energy for the manipulative games she had to play with Calix tonight.

She checked her phone and it showed five minutes till nine.

It was almost midnight by the time Calix stopped in front of her house. He opened the car door for her and walked with her to the main gate, his palm on the small of her back. She fumbled in her purse, pulling out the keys. She slid the key ring in her finger and turned around to face him. He didn’t say anything, his eyes locked on hers. She took a step closer and his hand slid down from her back to her waist.“I’m not letting you go so easily,” she whispered and she meant every word. She felt intoxicated and the wine she’d consumed had nothing to do with it.She wanted to keep him close for as long as she could before her self assigned deadline ran out. Before she had to return to the job.“I don’t want you to,” he replied as his fingers brushed back a stray strand of hair from her face.“You didn’t fulfil your part of the deal, you know,” she said softly, her palms splayed against his chest.“And what deal would that be?”“You have to tell me why you asked me on a date in the first

“My life isn't nearly as interesting as yours,” she said softly, taking a sip of the wine.“I’m sure that’s not true. Every story is interesting in its own unique way.”She smiled at him and drowned her half glass of wine in one go before she began speaking. “It’s the most typical American household shit. Absent dad, addict mom.”He silently offered her the wine bottle and she nodded and extended her glass. He filled it up and she took a mouthful.“I got her arrested,” she paused and glanced up as if she was expecting to see shock or judgment on his face but his face was impassive. She licked her lower lips. All fake tells to showcase her fake nervousness and hesitance.“Life with her was hell but I was pushing through anyway. But then she got out of control. She started forcing me to taste whatever shit she bought home and I just knew if I ever did that, it would ruin my life. So I called the police. I showed them her secret stash and I got put into foster care.”He nodded empathica

The restaurant was a quaint little place. There was classical music playing softly in the background and the tables were a good distance away from each other, giving everyone their privacy. The lady at the entrance led them towards their table and a waiter appeared just as they sat down, placing down the menus and popping open a bottle of champagne. She grabbed her glass and allowed the waiter to fill it up before taking a long swig of the drink. She bit back a sigh at the familiar warmth the liquid filled her with and she felt her nerves settle a little. She was an alcoholic in the making at this point.“Better than the records room?” He asked, staring at her from over his glass.“Oh, loads,” she grinned. “I wasn't expecting anything this fancy but considering what I've seen of your life, I should have been.”“What have you seen of my life?” He asked curiously.“Those people throw parties to welcome winter. I mean, if it's not the most ridiculous thing ever, I don't know what is.”He

Ilana pulled off her shirt and breathed a sigh of relief. She didn’t have the time to enjoy the freedom as a shiver ran down her spine and she crept under her blankets, curling in a ball for more warmth. She winced as she turned on her side a little too hard and a pain shot through her shoulder. It was out of bandages now but any sudden movement still caused dull waves of pain. Her phone vibrated and she picked it up to see a message notification from an unknown number. She unlocked the screen and tapped on the notification. How does Sunday, 9 pm sound for the date? C.R.MShe smiled to herself. It had only been a few hours since she’d left him in the records room. Sounds great. P.S: Where did you get my number from?He replied within a minute.Great. Ilana followed the horde of people upstairs to the open air cafeteria when someone bumped into her, coming from the opposite direction. Before she could react, she felt fingers close around her hand and something small and featherlight being shoved into her closed fist. She accepted it and looked up to see Calix staring down at her.“I'm sorry. I wasn't looking,” he said, looking anything but sorry.“It's alright,” she said and the words were barely out of her mouth before he was walking away. She glanced over her shoulder, trying to hide her confusion. She could feel the paper crinkle in her fist and she held tighter, finally reaching the rooftop. It was a comfortable area with round plastic tables placed at little distances and a green awning for shade. There was a coffee station at one corner and a vending machine full of snacks right next to it but people mostly bought lunch from home.Ilana pulled out a chair at an empty table and sat down. She glanced around to make sure there w
