~Mia’s POV~

I couldn't fathom what was happening. How did Robert find me? How could he possibly fight, handle firearms, run like an athlete, and carry me like a soldier rescuing his comrade—only to surrender himself to the police? It was all a mystery.

As we stood, waiting to be arrested, I sensed his fear. Just then, headlights flashed through the darkness, racing toward us. A thick cloud of tear gas filled the air, making everything blur into chaos.

It was toxic. I couldn’t breathe. My chest tightened as I slowly began to lose consciousness. Gunshots rang out, but it was impossible to see who was shooting or being shot at.

I felt Robert’s arms gently lifting me into a black van, and within seconds, we were on the move.

During the ride, an excruciating pain surged through me. I cried out. I knew I’d been shot. A bullet had pierced my arm.

“Hurry, bring the first aid box!” Robert’s voice shook with worry.

I groaned, gritting my teeth in pain. They shoved a cloth between my teeth, and

(Robert POV)I was halfway to Collins's apartment when my phone rang.James.I almost didn't answer. But something made me pick up."She's here," James said. "At the mansion. She wants to see you."My heart stopped. "Mia's there?""Yes. And Robert? She has papers with her. Legal documents. I think you should get here quickly."I made an illegal U-turn. Nearly caused an accident. Didn't care.Mia was at the mansion. Mia wanted to see me.Maybe she'd had time to think. Maybe the anger had cooled enough for conversation. Maybe she was ready to listen.I drove faster than safe. Made it home in twelve minutes that should have taken twenty-five.Her car was in the driveway. She'd come alone. That had to mean something.I found her in James's study. She stood by the window, back straight, expression carved from ice. A folder sat on the desk beside her.Professional. Detached. Like we were strangers about to conduct business."Mia." Her name came out like a prayer. She turned. Her eyes were r

(Mia POV)The nausea started on day five.At first I thought it was stress. Grief manifesting physically the way it always did. My body rebelling against the emotional devastation. But this felt different. More persistent. More specific.I woke up dizzy. Couldn't stomach the coffee Collins made. The smell alone made my stomach turn."You okay?" he asked when I pushed the mug away."Just tired. Haven't been sleeping well.""Maybe you should see a doctor.""It's just stress. It'll pass."But it didn't pass.Day six brought morning sickness that lasted all day. I barely made it to the bathroom in time. Spent twenty minutes hunched over the toilet while Collins knocked softly on the door asking if I needed anything."I'm fine," I called back. "Just a stomach bug.""You should rest. I'll call your office, tell them you need a few more days.""No. I need to work. Need something normal."But normal felt impossible when everything in my body felt wrong.Day seven brought exhaustion so complet

( Robert POV)I couldn't just show up at Collins's apartment and demand Mia listen to me.Not without more proof. Not when my word against Sophia's had already failed so spectacularly.I needed concrete evidence. Irrefutable facts that would prove this was all orchestrated.Victoria had given me a starting point. But I needed more.I called Dennis Shaw at seven AM the morning after confronting Sophia.Dennis was the best private investigator in California. Expensive. Discreet. Thorough. The kind of man who found things people desperately wanted to stay hidden."Mr. Lud." His voice was gravelly from years of cigarettes. "It's been a while.""I need your help. Urgently.""What kind of help?""The kind that involves digging into two people's lives and finding connections they don't want found.""Sounds expensive.""Money isn't an issue. Time is. I need everything you can find on Sophia Wealth and Collins Ryder. Bank records. Phone logs. Meeting locations. Any connection between them."De

(Mia POV)I stayed at Collins's apartment because I had nowhere else to go.Not the mansion. Not my own house that had never felt like home. Not anywhere Robert might find me.I just needed space. Distance. Time to breathe without feeling like I was drowning.Collins didn't ask questions. Just showed me the guest room again and said, "Stay as long as you need."The first day passed in a blur.I lay in bed staring at the ceiling. My phone buzzed constantly. Robert calling. Texting. Leaving voicemails I couldn't bring myself to listen to.What could he possibly say that would make any difference? I'd seen her in his bed. Heard her talk about their months-long affair. Watched him stand there unable to deny it because he couldn't remember. How do you come back from that?Collins brought me food I didn't eat. Water I barely touched. Sat with me in silence when words felt impossible."I'm sorry," he said quietly. "You didn't deserve this.""Maybe I did. Maybe I was naive to think a contract

  • The mysterious Billionaire's Wife; a lost heiress.   114: The Truth

(Robert POV)I drove straight to the Wealth estate. Not Collins's apartment. Not to chase Mia down when she clearly didn't want to be found. But to the source of this nightmare.Sophia needed to answer for what she'd done. The Wealth mansion loomed behind iron gates. All marble columns and manicured lawns. A monument to old money and older entitlement.I pressed the intercom. "I need to see Sophia. Now.""Mr. Lud?" The security guard sounded surprised. "Does Miss Wealth know you're coming?""She'll want to see me. Trust me."The gates opened after a moment's hesitation.I parked in the circular driveway. Didn't bother knocking. Just walked through the front door like I owned the place.A staff member appeared. "Sir, you can't just...""Where is she?""Miss Wealth is in the conservatory. But sir, you should really..."I was already moving. Through the foyer. Past expensive art and furniture that probably cost more than most houses. Following the sound of classical music.Sophia sat at

  • The mysterious Billionaire's Wife; a lost heiress.   113: Unraveling

( Robert POV) I stood in the driveway watching Mia's taillights disappear down the road. My feet were bare against cold concrete. I didn't remember coming outside without shoes. Didn't remember half of what had just happened. Just knew that everything was falling apart faster than I could stop it. "Mr. Robert." Mrs. Cara stood in the doorway. "You should come inside." "She's gone." "I know." "She thinks I betrayed her." "I know that too." Mrs. Cara's voice was gentle. "Come inside before you catch cold." I went inside because there was nothing else to do. Standing in the driveway wouldn't bring Mia back. Nothing would bring her back except truth, and I didn't even know what the truth was anymore. The bedroom still reeked of Sophia's perfume. Thick and cloying. Making my stomach turn. I stripped the sheets. Threw them in the hallway. Opened every window despite the cold morning air. My head pounded. Remnants of too much alcohol and too little sleep. Or maybe something else.
