Shards of glass glittered faintly like frost across the floor, the curtains by the balcony swaying with the night breeze the masked man had left in his wake.

I pressed my back harder against the wall, the plaster cold and unyielding, my body trembling so violently I thought I might shatter like the glass around me. My palms were scraped and slick from the cuts I’d gotten crawling backward. My heart felt like it had migrated into my throat, pulsing so hard it hurt.

“You’re safe now,” Damien murmured without looking at me. His voice was low, the kind of low you use to calm a child or a cornered animal. He kept his eyes fixed on Liam, his body angled like a shield between us, one hand still slightly raised.

Safe?

The word cracked in my head like glass under pressure. My eyes darted to t

Kayla’s POVThe nurse’s warning echoed in the silence, heavy and poisonous. Don’t trust anyone. Her body went still again, unconscious, and the words hung between us like smoke, curling, suffocating, impossible to ignore.I clutched my stomach, rocking slightly where I sat against the wall. My heartbeat thundered in my ears. If I couldn’t trust anyone, then who was left? Damien? Liam? Both of them had claimed to protect me, but both carried shadows in their eyes that frightened me just as much as the voice in the dark.Damien crouched beside the nurse, checking her pulse with steady fingers. Relief flickered across his face when he found it. “She’s holding on. We need to get her to a hospital.”“No,” Liam snapped, his voice sharp as a blade. His eyes locked on Damien, then me. “The second we step outside, he’ll follow us. He’ll strike again. Kayla stays here, where I can control who comes near her.”Control. The word sliced through me. He hadn’t even realized what he’d said. He didn’t

My breath came in jagged gasps, my heart pounding so loudly it felt like it could give me away. That voice still rang in my ears, soft, taunting, chilling.“Say it, Kayla. Say my name.”I spun toward the sound, my body trembling uncontrollably. My lips parted, but no words escaped. Every shadow in the room seemed alive, every corner a threat.Damien’s hand brushed mine in the dark, steadying me. “Stay close,” he whispered. His voice was sharp, protective, but I could hear the tremor beneath it.Liam’s tone cut through the blackness, furious and demanding. “Show yourself! Stop hiding like a coward!”Silence answered. And then—footsteps. Slow. Heavy. Inside the apartment.I gasped, clutching Damien’s arm. My body curled protectively around my stomach as if my trembling hands could shield the baby from the monster stalking me.The footsteps stopped. A breath brushed my ear, hot, close, so close I thought

Kayla’s POV“I know who he is.”The words slipped from me before I could stop them. My voice shook, my chest heaving, my whole body trembling with the weight of what I had just admitted.Damien’s eyes widened, his hand tightening on my arm. “Kayla… tell us. Who is he?”Liam stepped closer, his voice raw, demanding. “Say it.”But I couldn’t. My throat closed, the truth clawing inside me like a beast desperate to be freed. My lips trembled, but no sound came. If I said it, if I spoke the name, then it wouldn’t just be a fear anymore. It would be real.Tears spilled down my cheeks. I shook my head violently, pressing my palms against my ears. “I can’t. Please don’t make me.”“Kayla.” Liam’s tone softened, but the desperation in it made my heart twist. His hand reached toward me, stopping just short of my shoulder. “If you know who he is, you have to tell us. That’s the only way we can stop him.”I stared at him through blurred vision, my chest aching. “And what if it destroys me? What if

Kayla’s POVI couldn’t breathe. The apartment felt like a cage, each wall closing in tighter, trapping me between two men who claimed to want to protect me and the monster outside who promised to take me. My tears blurred everything, but the fear was sharp, slicing me from the inside out.Damien’s hand lingered on my arm, steady, grounding. “Kayla, look at me. We need to move, now. Every second we stay here, we’re giving him more power.”But Liam’s voice rose, desperate, raw. “No. She’s coming with me. This ends tonight.”I shook my head violently, pressing both palms against my stomach as though I could shield the fragile heartbeat inside. “Stop. Please stop.” My voice cracked, ragged and broken. “I can’t keep being torn apart between the two of you. I’m not a trophy to be claimed. I’m just… I’m just trying to survive.”My words cut through the tension. For a moment, they both went still.Liam’s chest heaved, his blue eyes locked on me with something fierce, something almost unrecogn

You’ve always known. The words clung to me, gnawed at me, wrapped around my throat like a noose. My mind spun in frantic circles, clawing through years of memories, searching for the match, the place where I had heard that voice before. But every time I got close, fear dragged me back, whispering that maybe the truth was worse than not knowing at all.Damien pressed a towel to his bleeding arm, his jaw tight, his dark eyes sharp.
