Chapter Five:

Zara didn't remember walking home.

One second she was standing in the middle of the quad staring at a photo she'd thought was gone forever, and the next she was sitting on her bathroom floor with her back against the tub, phone clutched so tight in her hand that her knuckles had gone white, and she genuinely couldn't account for the twenty minutes in between.

Maya found her there an hour later.

"Zara?" The bathroom door creaked open. "Hey — hey, what happened, what's wrong—"

"They have the photos," Zara said. Her voice came out strange, flat, like it belonged to someone else. "They said they still have all of them."

Maya didn't need to ask which photos. Her face went pale, and she sank down onto the bathroom floor next to Zara without a word, wrapping an arm around her shoulders, and for a long moment neither of them said anything at all.

"I deleted everything," Zara finally whispered. "Every copy. I made sure. I checked three times."

"I know you did."

"So how does someone still have them?"

Maya didn't have an answer for that, and the silence that followed was its own kind of answer, heavy and unwelcome.

"What if it's him?" Zara asked, so quiet it was almost not a question at all. "What if he kept copies this whole time and he's just been waiting?"

"You don't know that."

"I don't know anything," Zara said, and the crack in her voice was the closest thing to crying she'd let herself get in two years. "I thought I buried it. I thought I was safe. I built this whole — this whole version of myself specifically so nobody could ever do this to me again, and it took three weeks for someone to prove that none of it actually protected me at all."

"Zara, look at me." Maya turned, taking Zara's face gently in both hands, forcing eye contact. "This isn't your fault. None of it. Not two years ago, and not tonight. Whoever is doing this is a coward hiding behind a fake number, and cowards do this because it works. Because it makes people scared enough to stay quiet. You don't have to give them that."

"What else am I supposed to do?"

"Report it. Go to campus security. Show them the messages."

"And say what?" Zara's laugh came out broken, humorless. "Hi, someone's threatening to release photos proving I'm exactly as much of a disaster as everyone already thinks I am? That'll go great."

"That's not what those photos would prove, and you know it."

"Nobody else will see it that way. You know how this campus works. The story's always simpler than the truth. It always has been."

Maya didn't have a good answer for that, because she knew, better than almost anyone, how true it was.

Zara didn't sleep again that night, and by the time Thursday's study session rolled around, she'd made a decision, the kind of decision that felt less like a choice and more like armor going back on, piece by piece, whether she wanted it to or not.

She was going to end this. Whatever this was — the study sessions that had started meaning more than they should, the way her chest did something complicated every time Ethan looked at her a certain way, the reckless, dangerous hope that had been building in her for three weeks that maybe, for once, someone actually saw past the reputation to whoever she really was underneath it.

She couldn't afford that hope right now. Not with someone out there holding proof of the worst thing that had ever happened to her, ready to use it the second she got too close to anything good.

Ethan noticed the second she walked in.

"You look different," he said carefully, closing his laptop halfway, giving her his full attention in a way that used to feel like being seen and now just felt dangerous.

"Do I?" Zara dropped into her usual chair, but something about the way she did it was different too — more distance in it, more edges.

"You look like you're about to tell me something I'm not going to like."

"Smart boy." She pulled out her laptop, not looking at him. "This isn't working anymore. Us. The study sessions turning into whatever they've been turning into."

Ethan went very still. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about the fact that we're supposed to be project partners, and somewhere along the way it turned into something else, and that was a mistake. Mine, probably, more than yours. But it needs to stop."

"Zara." His voice was careful, quiet, the way you'd talk to someone standing too close to a ledge. "Where is this coming from? Two days ago you were laughing at my jokes about Dawson's rubric. What happened between then and now?"

"Nothing happened. I just came to my senses."

"That's not true, and I think you know it's not true." He leaned forward, and there was something in his eyes — not anger, just real concern, the kind that made her chest hurt worse than if he'd been angry. "You've had shadows under your eyes for three weeks. You check your phone like you're bracing for something painful every single time. And now suddenly you're pulling away, right after whatever happened tonight put that look on your face. I'm not stupid, Zara. Something's wrong, and you're not telling me what it is."

"Not everything is your business, Ethan."

"I didn't say it was my business. I said I care, which is apparently a crime now."

"Maybe it should be." The words came out sharper than she meant them to, sharp enough that she saw him flinch, just slightly, and she hated herself a little for it, and hated herself more for not being able to stop. "Maybe caring about me is a genuinely bad idea, and you should listen to whatever instinct you clearly don't have telling you that."

"That's not fair."

"None of this is fair," Zara snapped, and her voice cracked on the last word, betraying every careful, controlled thing she was trying to project. "Do you think I wanted any of this? Do you think I planned on some project partner making me feel things I haven't let myself feel in two years, right before everything falls apart again?"

The room went completely silent. Ethan stared at her, something shifting rapidly behind his eyes — surprise, and underneath the surprise, something that looked almost like hope, which was exactly the wrong reaction, exactly the reaction she couldn't afford right now.

"What do you mean, everything falls apart again?" he asked quietly. "Zara. Talk to me."

"I can't." Her hands were shaking; she pressed them flat against the table to stop it, and it barely worked. "I can't do this with you. Not right now. Maybe not ever. There are things about me, about my past, that if you knew — you'd understand why this is a bad idea. Why you should walk away right now while you still can."

"What if I don't want to walk away?"

"Then you're not listening to me."

"I'm listening to every word." Ethan's voice was low, steady, and it was that steadiness, more than anything, that made something in Zara's chest ache with a longing she had no room for right now. "I'm listening, and what I'm hearing is someone who's scared, not someone who actually wants me gone. Those aren't the same thing, and I think you know that."

"Don't." Her voice broke properly this time, just for a second, before she caught it. "Don't do the thing where you see through me. I need you to not see through me right now. I need you to just take what I'm telling you at face value and let this go."

"I can't do that." His voice was gentle but immovable. "I've spent my entire life doing what I'm told, taking things at face value because it's easier and safer and it's what's expected of me. I'm not doing that with you. Not about this."

"Why not?" It came out almost like a plea, raw and unguarded, the most honest thing she'd said to him all night.

Ethan looked at her for a long moment, and when he spoke, his voice had dropped to something quieter, something that landed directly in the center of her chest.

"Because I think I'm falling in love with you," he said. "And I don't think that's something I can just decide to stop doing because you're scared of something you won't tell me about."

The words hung in the air between them, and for one suspended second, Zara felt her entire carefully built wall threaten to come down all at once — every piece of armor, every practiced deflection, every joke she'd ever used to keep someone at exactly the right distance, all of it wavering under the weight of five words she'd never expected to actually hear and mean something.

She wanted, more than she'd wanted almost anything in the last two years, to let it fall.

Instead, she stood up so fast her chair scraped hard against the floor.

"You don't get to say that," she said, her voice shaking. "You don't get to say that and expect me to just — to just stand here and let it change anything, when there's a version of my past out there right now that could destroy both of us if it gets out, and you don't even know what it is."

"Then tell me."

"I can't."

"Zara—"

"I have to go." She grabbed her bag, hands still shaking, refusing to look at him because she knew, if she looked at him right now, she wouldn't be able to leave at all. "I'm sorry. For the bet, for all of it. This was a mistake."

"Zara, wait—"

She didn't wait. She was out the study room door and moving fast down the library hallway before he could catch up, ignoring the sound of her own name behind her, the raw, confused hurt in his voice that she was going to hear echoing in her head for days.

She made it all the way to the library's front entrance before her phone buzzed one more time.

She almost didn't check it. Some instinct, some small, self-preserving part of her, told her to keep walking, to get home, to put actual physical distance between herself and whatever was waiting on that screen.

She checked it anyway. She always did.

Unknown Number: Good girl. Glad to see you're finally being smart about this. Keep him away from you, and maybe I keep these to myself. Get close to him again, and everyone finds out exactly what kind of girl Zara Cole really is.

Zara stood frozen in the library's front entrance, students moving past her in both directions, completely unaware that her entire world had just narrowed down to a single glowing screen in her shaking hands.

Whoever this was, they weren't just watching her.

They were watching her and Ethan both. Closely enough to know, within minutes, exactly what had just happened in that study room.

Which meant, whoever it was, they weren't some anonymous stranger sending messages from a distance.

They were close. Close enough to see. Close enough, possibly, to be someone she passed in the hallway every single day without knowing it.

Close enough, maybe, to be someone she'd trusted.

Zara's stomach turned to ice as a single, horrifying thought took root and refused to let go: what if it wasn't a stranger at all?

What if it was someone she knew?

"Checking every face that walks by. It's not sustainable.""I know," Zara admitted, letting the curtain fall closed. "I just can't make myself stop yet. "He said five minutes.""I'm calling campus police back right now," Dean Alvarez said, already dialing, her voice tight with controlled urgency. "If they're close to his apartment, this could actually work in our favor. If he's sending something from his device right now, that's real-time evidence of exactly where he is."Zara barely heard her. She was staring at her phone, watching the seconds tick by on the clock in the corner of the screen, every one of them feeling like an hour."Hey." Ethan crouched in front of her, taking both her hands in his, forcing her attention away from the countdown and onto his face instead. "Look at me. Chapter Ten: Zara didn't remember getting dressed the next morning. She remembered lying awake most of the night beside Ethan on his couch, both of them drifting in and out of a shallow, restless doze, and then somehow it was seven a.m. and Chris was making bad coffee in the kitchen and Ethan was pulling a clean shirt over his head, and none of it felt real, like she was watching someone else's morning happen around her."You okay?" Ethan asked, crouching in front of her where she sat on the edge of the couch, hands wrapped around a mug she hadn't actually drunk from."No," Zara admitted. "I have a bad feeling about this.""Whatever it is, we face it together. Right?""Right," she said, though the word came out thinner than she meant it to.They walked to the Dean's office in silence, Maya and Chris a step behind, the whole campus washed in the flat gray light of an overcast morning that felt appropriate for whatever waited for them. Chapter Nine: Zara didn't sleep. Not after sleep well, Zara sat glowing on her phone screen at nine-forty at night, not after Maya double- and triple-checked every lock in the apartment, not after the two of them sat up on the couch with all the lights on until almost two in the morning, jumping at every sound the old building made settling into the cold. She texted Ethan around midnight, unable to stop herself.Zara: He was outside our door tonight. Chapter Eight: Ethan was on his feet before Zara had fully processed what she was looking at."He's outside," he said, already moving toward the door. "He's got to still be close. That photo was taken one minute ago.""Ethan, wait—" Zara grabbed his arm, pulling him back before he could push through the coffee shop door. "If it is him, and you go running out there looking furious, he'll just disappear. He's had two years of practice staying hidden. You're not going to catch him by charging outside like an angry boyfriend in a movie."Ethan stopped, breathing hard, some of the heat in his expression giving way to frustrated logic. "So what do we do? Just sit here and let him keep watching us?""We think," Zara said, though her own hands were shaking as she said it, adrenaline and fear tangled together into something that made it hard to sit still. "Carefully. Because if this really is Tanner, and he's willing to follow me across states to keep doing this, then he's not going to just f

Chapter Seven: Ethan was out of his chair and through the study room door before Zara could stop him."Bree." His voice cut through the library hallway, sharper than Zara had ever heard it, all the careful, practiced politeness stripped clean away. "What did you just send her?"Bree's eyes widened, genuine surprise flickering across her face before she smoothed it back into something more careful. "Excuse me?""Don't." Ethan stopped a few feet from her, and Zara, following close behind, had never seen him look like this before — jaw tight, hands clenched at his sides, every ounce of the composed student council president burned away by something close to fury. "Zara just got an email that said 'I already told him myself.' You're standing right outside the door with your phone in your hand. Don't play games with me right now.""I don't know what you're talking about." Bree's voice wavered, just slightly, and Zara, watching closely despite the panic still roaring in her ears, caught so
