Chapter 3

Author: Sweetie Moore
Seeing the transfer record, Lincoln threw the phone on the ground.

"Gina! I'm looking out for you, but you're still hung up on your ex. Forget the checkup. I don't need it. I hope my leg just breaks off!"

He stormed away in anger.

Gina, who was decisive and commanding at the company, did not dare argue with him. She moved to pursue him.

Then, as if remembering something, she stopped herself abruptly. She turned back, gently took my hand, and shook it. Her tone was earnest.

"Nathan, just two more days. Please be patient. I'll make it up to you properly after this."

This was her favorite way of acting sweet. In the past, when she showed me this vulnerable side, my heart would melt.

Now, all I felt was disgust.

Before I could pull my hand away, she turned and went after Lincoln. I stood there alone, wiping the back of my hand with my sleeve.

In two days, I would be gone. I was done with her.

After leaving the parking garage, I quickly found the buyer, got the money, and had Anna cremated.

By the time I returned home holding Anna's ashes, night had fallen. Gina was not back yet.

For once, she actually told me where she was. She said Lincoln's leg hurt and it was inconvenient for him, so she was staying at the hospital to take care of him.

The last time she checked in with me like this was months ago.

For the first time, I did not get jealous or ask her to make it up to me. I simply opened my work software and submitted my resignation.

It still had not been approved.

I set my phone down and ignored it.

Two days was not much time. I started packing first and decided to go to the office tomorrow to wrap things up in person.

Soon, seven years of my life was condensed into a single twenty-inch suitcase.

The next morning, I was still asleep when Gina's assistant knocked on the door. She saw the suitcase piled up inside and paused.

"Mr. Harper, are you going on a trip?"

"Yes."

She did not press further.

"Ms. Whitmore requests your presence."

I did not want to go, but the bodyguards behind her forced me to leave.

Our destination was a bridal shop. Gina smiled at me and pulled me into the fitting room.

She took out a custom-tailored suit and personally helped me put it on, lowering her head to tie my tie.

Looking down at her, I felt a bit dazed. To fully commit to destroying Lincoln, she had stopped being affectionate with me. She said the act had to fool herself before it could fool anyone else.

As she helped me with my cufflinks, she suddenly stopped.

"Where's your watch?"

Before I could respond, she laughed softly. "You put it back in the box for safekeeping again, huh? My handsome Nathan looks perfect in this kind of outfit. So distinguished.

"I've already had our wedding designed.

"It's the seaside wedding you've always wanted, with the flower arch Anna loves. We'll have her be our flower girl, okay?"

Her words were gentle, but every one of them hurt.

I clenched my fists. I remembered Anna asking me through her tears before she died.

"Nate, why hasn't Gina come to save me?"

I remembered how Gina used to treasure Anna like the apple of her eye, worrying about her condition, telling her bedtime stories night after night without ever seeming tired.

Marrying Gina had once been my ultimate dream, but it could never happen now.

"Gina, the wedding—"

She smiled, placing her finger on my lips.

"Our plan is almost finished. Tomorrow is Lincoln's birthday. I'm going to announce in front of everyone that he's being fired and kicked out of the company.

"The house and car under his name will all be reclaimed through legal action.

"He's gotten used to living lavishly over the years. He won't even eat anywhere that isn't a five-star restaurant. I want to see if he'll still dare to lecture people about workplace reform when he's lost everything and everyone's walking all over him."

With that, I pulled Tiana onto the stage and got the marriage license as quickly as possible.Gina tried to interfere, but the crowd held her back.In the end, I held up the marriage certificate and gave Gina a polite smile."We won't be inviting you to the wedding reception. Have you considered what will happen to your company when it's left without leadership?"Gina looked devastated. "Nathan, do you have to reject me so harshly? What do I have to do for you to forgive me?"I was impatient and said carelessly, "If you can bring Anna back to life, then I might consider forgiving you."Asking her to resurrect the dead was the most direct form of rejection possible.Gina's face went pale. Her fingernails dug deep into her palms. She could not say a word. However, as soon as Tiana and I stepped out of the church, we came face to face with a disheveled man charging toward us with a cleaver. No one in the crowd was armed. Chaos erupted as people scattered in all directions. The ma

No matter what, Gina had never wanted Anna to die.She grew up in an orphanage and never knew what family felt like. It was Anna who taught her what it meant to be worried about and trusted completely by a younger sister. However, in the end, she had been too arrogant, too self-righteous.Gina's voice was humble and pleading."Nathan, I was wrong. I had the recording you sent me verified by a professional. It's real. I've been busy dealing with Lincoln this whole time."Her hands trembling, she pulled out her phone and showed me pictures like she was presenting a trophy."Look. The shares, the VP position, the sports car, the mansion. I got everything back."I kicked Lincoln out of the company. No one in the industry will hire him now. He can't handle living a simple life, so I heard he took out loans. Debt collectors come to his door every day. He's covered in bruises from the beatings."Are you happy? Are you even a little happy?"I closed my eyes, feeling nothing but the ab

So that was it. I wondered why Gina had suddenly been willing to give me back my VP position. It turned out she had given Lincoln something far better. Company shares. He no longer cared about trivial perks like a VP title.Still, none of it had anything to do with me anymore."Oh. Well, congratulations. I hope you two get married soon and live happily ever after."Lincoln sounded smug."I knew your sister needed surgery. I knew you were short 30 thousand dollars. I blocked the transfer on purpose because I knew she'd die. And I knew that once she was gone, you'd finally give up and leave Gina for good."Nathan, no matter how capable you are, what's the point? The workplace doesn't need honest people like you."I said nothing and hung up.A moment later, a notification popped up on my screen."Recording saved locally."The moment Lincoln called, I had a feeling he was up to no good, so I started recording. I just had not expected to actually capture something useful.Still, w

"Nathan, do you regret it?" Her tone was calm.I looked down and smiled bitterly. "I do. If I had known you were the chairman's daughter, I would have gone with you."Tiana froze. In her memory, I was still the young man from seven years ago with light in his eyes, strong principles, and a confident posture. She had expected me to stubbornly insist I had no regrets.Instead, I looked desolate and unbearably lonely. That loneliness made her heart skip. She took a deep breath."What happened? Did you and your wife have a fight?""We broke up.""You broke up? When? Why? You used to say you loved her more than you loved yourself—"Realizing her emotions were running too high, Tiana clenched her hand into a fist and cleared her throat lightly."Don't misunderstand. I'm just concerned about my employee's mental and physical well being."I had nothing to hide, so I told her everything.Tiana was even angrier than I was. She ground her teeth for a good while before telling me to fo

"No. She's not. She's just a stranger. That's all."My colleague clearly sensed that Gina and I had an unusual relationship. He said nothing more.Claire saw her boss kneeling on the ground and hurried to help her up."Ms. Whitmore, maybe we should just let Mr. Harper go. With so many people watching, if this gets in the news, it could affect the company's image."Gina's face darkened. She had a strong premonition that if she could not make me stay now, no matter how hard she pursued me in the future, I would never look back. However, soon, a group of traffic officers entered the hall. When they saw Gina, they frowned and reprimanded her."You were speeding. We told you to pull over and you didn't stop. Even if you're in a hurry to catch a flight, you can't drive like that. Your car's been towed. You need to come with us now."Gina pleaded softly. "I can go with you, but please, just give me a moment. Let me say a few words to my boyfriend. Please?""Gina?"Behind the officers

Gina stood up abruptly, bracing herself against the desk. "What did you say?"She looked down at her phone, the call still active. She was about to speak, when on the other end, an airport announcement echoed through."Attention passengers. Your international flight—"The next second, the call disconnected. On my end, I turned off my phone and followed my future colleagues to the boarding queue. The blonde, blue-eyed HR representative struck up a conversation with me in Eralish."Nathan, we've been trying to recruit you for seven years. We sent you messages every year and even sent people to seek you out domestically. You wouldn't even give us the chance to buy you a meal. So why now? Why did you suddenly agree to join our company?"I looked down. My grip on the suitcase handle tightened.Inside the suitcase, Anna's ashes lay quietly."I wanted a change in perspective. Staying in one place for too long, never moving forward, gets exhausting."The HR rep clapped me on the shou
