Chapter 5

Author: Sweetie Moore
The photo showed their hands tightly clasped together at sunset. The Patek Philippe watch Lincoln had thrown away was back on his wrist.

The caption read, "She said love comes without warning. I said I'd never stop hoping she'd feel the same."

My finger slipped and I accidentally liked the post. I quickly unliked it.

Gina showed no reaction.

By the time I got home, it was late. I had not eaten all day, so I made myself a bowl of instant noodles.

Halfway through eating, Gina came home. She smelled faintly of alcohol.

She had low alcohol tolerance. I used to care about her and never allowed her to attend drinking events.

In the past, I would have asked her where she had been drinking and made sure she hydrated and took aspirin. Now, I kept my head down and continued eating without looking up.

She kicked off her heels. Her nose twitched and her brow furrowed.

"Why didn't you wait for me? Didn't I tell you not to eat this kind of junk at home?"

Gina hated the smell of instant noodles. She thought it was cheap and disgusting. Now that I thought about it, what she found disgusting were the years we struggled together.

She walked over and accidentally bumped into my bag sitting on top of my suitcase. The documents I needed for going abroad scattered on the floor.

She picked up my passport. Her expression shifted slightly, then she suddenly smiled.

"Nathan, are you upset? Are you throwing a tantrum about going abroad?"

She casually tossed the passport back into my bag without a care.

Having made up with Lincoln, she was in a good mood. She pressed down on my shoulders with practiced ease.

"I got too into character today and was harsh with you. I apologize.

"But we've been planning this trap for a year. We can't let it end so sloppily.

"I've already convinced Lincoln to come back, but he'll definitely be on guard for a while. You and Anna just need to wait a bit longer. A month at most. Once I find the right opportunity, I'll humiliate him.

"But I know you're anxious, so I can—"

From two days to one month. At the end of the day, she just could not let him go.

Why bother making up excuses to deceive me?

"No need." I cut her off, slurped up the last of my noodles, and wiped my mouth with a napkin.

"Let's break up."

The moment those words left my mouth, I felt relieved. Gina's hand, which had been massaging my shoulders, froze.

I brushed her hand away and stood up to clean up the trash.

The alcohol had gone to her head. Her patience for coaxing me ran out, and her expression turned cold.

"Nathan, I just went to comfort Lincoln for a bit, and now you want to break up with me?

"Or is it because I didn't advance you those three months of salary? Your sister is fine. It's not like she'll die without that money. Why are you throwing a fit at me?"

At the mention of my sister, my heart twisted painfully. My eyes turned red, but I had cried all my tears the day Anna died.

"Yes. It's because of those three months of salary.

"Gina, you can drop tens of millions on a mansion for Lincoln without blinking. Is it really that hard to give me 30 thousand dollars?"

At the mention of money, Gina's eyes filled with scorn. She kicked over the trash can.

"It’s no wonder you kept saying you didn't want to play this game anymore. Turns out you're just vain. Lincoln was right. You're just like everyone else, trying to get money out of me."

I knew Gina grew up in foster care without much. She had an obsession with money.

I did not bother defending myself. I just said coldly, "Even though you removed me from my VP position, the amount of work I did didn't decrease at all. You should pay me an equivalent salary. I'm not asking for much. Just give me 70 thousand to make up the difference."

Seventy thousand was enough to buy out seven years of feelings and wipe the slate clean. I could use that money to buy Anna a burial plot abroad.

Gina's gaze turned ice cold.

"Nathan, I've endured humiliation for a year, and it was all for you. To be honest, if you weren't my boyfriend, you never would've been VP in the first place. Once we get married, everything will be yours anyway. Why are you in such a hurry?"

With that, I pulled Tiana onto the stage and got the marriage license as quickly as possible.Gina tried to interfere, but the crowd held her back.In the end, I held up the marriage certificate and gave Gina a polite smile."We won't be inviting you to the wedding reception. Have you considered what will happen to your company when it's left without leadership?"Gina looked devastated. "Nathan, do you have to reject me so harshly? What do I have to do for you to forgive me?"I was impatient and said carelessly, "If you can bring Anna back to life, then I might consider forgiving you."Asking her to resurrect the dead was the most direct form of rejection possible.Gina's face went pale. Her fingernails dug deep into her palms. She could not say a word. However, as soon as Tiana and I stepped out of the church, we came face to face with a disheveled man charging toward us with a cleaver. No one in the crowd was armed. Chaos erupted as people scattered in all directions. The ma

No matter what, Gina had never wanted Anna to die.She grew up in an orphanage and never knew what family felt like. It was Anna who taught her what it meant to be worried about and trusted completely by a younger sister. However, in the end, she had been too arrogant, too self-righteous.Gina's voice was humble and pleading."Nathan, I was wrong. I had the recording you sent me verified by a professional. It's real. I've been busy dealing with Lincoln this whole time."Her hands trembling, she pulled out her phone and showed me pictures like she was presenting a trophy."Look. The shares, the VP position, the sports car, the mansion. I got everything back."I kicked Lincoln out of the company. No one in the industry will hire him now. He can't handle living a simple life, so I heard he took out loans. Debt collectors come to his door every day. He's covered in bruises from the beatings."Are you happy? Are you even a little happy?"I closed my eyes, feeling nothing but the ab

So that was it. I wondered why Gina had suddenly been willing to give me back my VP position. It turned out she had given Lincoln something far better. Company shares. He no longer cared about trivial perks like a VP title.Still, none of it had anything to do with me anymore."Oh. Well, congratulations. I hope you two get married soon and live happily ever after."Lincoln sounded smug."I knew your sister needed surgery. I knew you were short 30 thousand dollars. I blocked the transfer on purpose because I knew she'd die. And I knew that once she was gone, you'd finally give up and leave Gina for good."Nathan, no matter how capable you are, what's the point? The workplace doesn't need honest people like you."I said nothing and hung up.A moment later, a notification popped up on my screen."Recording saved locally."The moment Lincoln called, I had a feeling he was up to no good, so I started recording. I just had not expected to actually capture something useful.Still, w

"Nathan, do you regret it?" Her tone was calm.I looked down and smiled bitterly. "I do. If I had known you were the chairman's daughter, I would have gone with you."Tiana froze. In her memory, I was still the young man from seven years ago with light in his eyes, strong principles, and a confident posture. She had expected me to stubbornly insist I had no regrets.Instead, I looked desolate and unbearably lonely. That loneliness made her heart skip. She took a deep breath."What happened? Did you and your wife have a fight?""We broke up.""You broke up? When? Why? You used to say you loved her more than you loved yourself—"Realizing her emotions were running too high, Tiana clenched her hand into a fist and cleared her throat lightly."Don't misunderstand. I'm just concerned about my employee's mental and physical well being."I had nothing to hide, so I told her everything.Tiana was even angrier than I was. She ground her teeth for a good while before telling me to fo

"No. She's not. She's just a stranger. That's all."My colleague clearly sensed that Gina and I had an unusual relationship. He said nothing more.Claire saw her boss kneeling on the ground and hurried to help her up."Ms. Whitmore, maybe we should just let Mr. Harper go. With so many people watching, if this gets in the news, it could affect the company's image."Gina's face darkened. She had a strong premonition that if she could not make me stay now, no matter how hard she pursued me in the future, I would never look back. However, soon, a group of traffic officers entered the hall. When they saw Gina, they frowned and reprimanded her."You were speeding. We told you to pull over and you didn't stop. Even if you're in a hurry to catch a flight, you can't drive like that. Your car's been towed. You need to come with us now."Gina pleaded softly. "I can go with you, but please, just give me a moment. Let me say a few words to my boyfriend. Please?""Gina?"Behind the officers

Gina stood up abruptly, bracing herself against the desk. "What did you say?"She looked down at her phone, the call still active. She was about to speak, when on the other end, an airport announcement echoed through."Attention passengers. Your international flight—"The next second, the call disconnected. On my end, I turned off my phone and followed my future colleagues to the boarding queue. The blonde, blue-eyed HR representative struck up a conversation with me in Eralish."Nathan, we've been trying to recruit you for seven years. We sent you messages every year and even sent people to seek you out domestically. You wouldn't even give us the chance to buy you a meal. So why now? Why did you suddenly agree to join our company?"I looked down. My grip on the suitcase handle tightened.Inside the suitcase, Anna's ashes lay quietly."I wanted a change in perspective. Staying in one place for too long, never moving forward, gets exhausting."The HR rep clapped me on the shou
