Dawn the following morning, and a gentle mist drifted between the trees, wrapping the cottage in sleeping tranquility. Adrian stood on the edge of the garden, fists at the pockets of his coat, looking east. Beyond those hills was his old world — his world that he had abandoned, his world that had cast him out.

He sensed Elara before she spoke a word.

"You sure you want to do it today?" she inquired softly, striding over to stand next to him, wrapped in a scarf at her throat and holding a teapot.

Adrian nodded slowly, his gaze still elsewhere. "Yes. I think I will. If I don't do it today, I'll never get a chance to break free."

Elara didn't prod him. She just held out the tea and wrapped her arms around his shoulder. "Then we'll go, then. You don't have to do any of this by yourself."

She'd said it before — in words, if not necessarily exactly in words, on days, however many — but every time she spoke the words, something new and whole itself together inside of him.

The succeeding days were gloomy with a reserved sense of anticipation, the sort that resided in the bottom of Adrian's chest and pulled the strings of his heart every time he was around Elara. It wasn't merely the building tension of what would be—it wasn't merely the yet unborn child that she carried within her womb—something was shifting in the air, a shift of seasons both literal and metaphoric. Adrian was flowering beyond what the virus and his family rejection could ever claim to the contrary. He was flowering. And it was because of Elara. It was that late afternoon time when Adrian had entered the study, where Elara sat at her chair facing the desk, rummaging through papers. The sun from the window painted the room a rose and amber goldish pinkish hue."Adrian," she said to him, her eyes flashing up to his with the smile that left him shivering. She'd never smiled like this at him out of sympathy before, never had her eyes falter while the rest of the world may have judged him.

  • Love's Healing Touch   Chapter 69 – When the Storm Lingers

It howled through the trees at night, scraping on the windows of Lancaster's manor as though it was some creature that had to be set free. Elara leaned in the hallway beyond the west wing, arms folded over her chest, looking out into the storm beyond through a tall, arched window. Rain lashed against the glass like brushstrokes, obscuring the world outside.Adrian trailed her back, his steps quiet. "Reminds me of the night I left," he whispered.Elara turned to him. His face was calm, but his eyes were tormented, as if pursuing memories still painful."Want to talk about it?" she asked. Adrian didn't respond. He walked, his fingers resting on the windowsill. "My father never came down himself. Had a letter brought by the butler. Said he hoped I'd 'find peace somewhere.' As if I was already dead." Elara's heart hurt too. "They were mistaken, Adrian. They all were." He laughed, a bitter one. "I know that now. But back then, I thought they were."Dry silence stretched between them

  • Love's Healing Touch    Chapter 68 – Threads of Belonging

The air in the Lancaster estate during morning was redolent with the scent of lavender and dewy ivy. Elara sat on the balcony of their room, arms crossed over the warm woolen cloak thrown around her shoulders. The garden below, as she saw it, seemed to lie out like a tapestry—wild still, but not dead. Everything from flowers to leaves seemed to whisper of the change that was budding between her and Adrian.Behind her, the rustling of blankets being readjusted stirred Adrian awake. She turned in time to see him sitting up, running his messy hair back."You always wake up earlier than me," he grumbled. She snuggled in next to him and pushed a strand of hair behind his ear."I like to hear the world wake up."Adrian's lips curled up into a small smile."I like waking up to you."Their morning quiet time was new, but already so integral to the texture of their lives. That peace, so foreign to Adrian last spring, was slowly becoming home.As Adrian got dressed for the day, his attitude shi

  • Love's Healing Touch    Chapter 67 – The First Light in New Walls

Sunlight streamed through the upper windows of the Lancaster house, golden dancing on walls once remembered. They'd spent their second day inside the estate house, and although all yet still surprised Elara, there was a quiet there she hadn't anticipated. The air was no longer heavy with Adrian's past—it was beginning to take on the shapes of their tomorrow.Elara awoke first, rolling over beneath the heavy velvet bedclothes of their bedchamber. She glanced over at Adrian, watching him sleep. There was something in the relaxed arrangement of his face while sleeping—unshackled, almost boyish—that always left her breathless. This was the man that the world had feared and excluded, the man whom they'd branded ruined. He was merely Adrian to her. Her Adrian. He rolled onto his side and opened his eyes slowly, a small smile tugging at his mouth as he saw her staring at him."You're gaping."She smiled. "I just can't believe that we're actually here."He wrapped his hand around hers under t

The next day Adrian's family departed, and the world had been rearranged—bigger in one corner, more substantial in another. Elara caught sight of Adrian walking back and forth in the house: quiet but not withdrawn, unhurried but no longer silently mourning. There had been an opening up in him, a wound which still leaked, but its mending was begun. He was in the kitchen, pouring boiling water into the tea kettle, and Elara sat a few feet off in the room, observing. His sleeves were rolled back, and his hair was tousled from just rising. For what felt like an eternity, he stood there, his face buried in the soft light out the window."You didn't sleep at all," Elara whispered.Adrian looked over his shoulder, a tired smile etching his face. "I couldn't help but think of last night. What they said. What they didn't.""Regret is heavy," she said, standing to walk beside him. "It is many things."He set a cup in front of her. "They want to come back today. To visit. To walk down to the cot

The subsequent days following the family visit of Adrian were uneventful but full of warmth both Elara and Adrian hadn't known in decades. The little cottage that had once been sanctuary to two isolated souls fleeing mankind now creaked with laughter and mending. But even during the times of tranquility, there was this unspoken between them—this which Adrian still couldn't bring himself to say.It was getting dark when Adrian was lingering at the tree line, his thoughts gnarled as uglily as the thorns that lined the forest floor. Elara sat beside him, hand-feeding two orphan lambs. She spoke softly to them, her voice low and serene. Adrian observed her for an instant before he moved closer."You always know they need," he said softly.Elara lifted her face, a gentle smile playing across her lips. "Animals are simple. They simply need to feel safe, warm, and loved."He sat next to her, following the spine of the lamb with his fingers. "Sounds like hu

Her legs wrapped in a loop around themselves on the apartment floor, dim light, city lights stretching out in far shadows behind glass windows. The flash drive that could fit in the palm of her hand was an electric live wire. Sinuous, silent, minute—but holding all her past. The answers she had been searching for all these years. The answer she never anticipated Killian to give her.Her computer rested, lid open on the low coffee table, cursor flashing in sync with the rhythm of her heartbeat. She wasn't ready. But she never would be.She took a breath and slid in the flash drive. The screen flickered to life instantly, folders neatly stacked, titles written in Killian's tidy, precise hand: Bank Transfers. Contracts. Victor. My Father. Yours.Elena opened the last one.The papers came one by one, unwillingly: torn letters, bank records, deeds. And in all of them—a faxed letter, stamped with a date close enough to twelve years earlier. Her father's writing, still so recognizable all th

The sky was a wide sheet of pale blue as spring progressed slowly into the little village. The final remains of winter had been swept clean by the last storm, and with its loss, something between Adrian and Elara had changed—almost without realizing it to either, but deeply.Adrian sat outside the cottage, fingers charcoal-blackened as he rubbed them over the paper to draw the shape of a fox he'd spotted earlier along the edge of the treeline. He sat still, intent, even when his mind wandered easily. It was a different sort of therapy, these still hours and painting. Before, he was rewarded for appearances; now, he was soothed by art.Elara sat in the window, scooping a little container with minute marigold seeds from the windowpane, singing. Fingers were caked with dirt, hair bound together in a matted knot, one smudge of filth on one cheek. Adrian stood by the glass, watching her, his heart aching at something he couldn't place. He came inside."You have a smudge on your cheek," he

  • Love's Healing Touch   Chapter 62 – The First Storm Together

It began with the gentle touch of the wind across the windows of the cottage. Elara was in the kitchen, singing softly as she prepared tea. The air was filled with the scent of rosemary and chamomile, and the smell of rain on the horizon.Adrian entered, his hair still damp from washing, dressed in a simple linen shirt she had mended for him. He looked more himself these days—stronger, more present. The scars remained, as did the memories of his illness, but something within him had softened.“You’re up early,” Elara said, pouring him a cup without needing to ask.“I couldn’t sleep,” he replied with a small smile, accepting the cup. “The sky looks strange today. Like it’s holding its breath.”Elara glanced out the window, noticing the thickening clouds creeping in over the hills. “A storm is coming. It’ll be the first one of the season.”Adrian stepped behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder. “Then we’ll weather it together.”They sat thus f
