The air suddenly felt thin. After a moment, I looked down and chuckled, "Zac Saunders, can't you just be straightforward?"

Zac stared at me with a darkening expression.

"I'm sorry, Sammi. Lucas is quite possessive.

"He won't accept a child that's not his mother's."

"And then? What do you want to say?" I said.

He turned his head slightly, as if finding it difficult to continue.

"Get rid of this child," each of Zac's words felt like a sharp blade, cutting into me mercilessly.

My ears buzzed, and my mind went blank. It felt like there was no sound around me. My body trembled, and I forced a bitter smile. "What if I don't want to?"
