Chapter 4

Author: Bald800
But really, I just wanted to sit next to Joanne.

Philip sat up front, chattering away with Joanne, talking about things going on in their company.

I didn't understand, nor could I get a word in, so I simply closed my eyes and pretended to doze off.

Suddenly, Philip turned to ask me, "Gary, how come you didn't go to Nina Kern's birthday party the day before yesterday?"

Nina's birthday? I opened my eyes.

No one had invited me. I could hardly go inviting myself and spoil the mood, could I?

"I didn't know she was having a birthday party," I replied softly.

"How could you not know?" Philip asked in surprise. "Nina and Joanne are so close."

I smiled and said nothing.

It was true, Nina and Joanne were as close as sisters.

Last month, Joanne didn't come home after her flight back from abroad. Instead, she went with Philip to the mountains to do some stargazing.

When I asked Nina about it, she even covered for Joanne. Only she didn't know that I'd already learned from Philip's Instagram post.

That time I cried and threw a fit. Joanne didn't want to stay at home, so she stayed at a hotel for three days.

Upon hearing what Philip said, Joanne glanced at me through the rearview mirror a little guiltily. I paid her no attention and simply closed my eyes again.

The takeout arrived at the same time we got home. I changed my clothes and started eating.

Joanne came out of the bathroom and asked, "Where's mine?"

I was a little surprised. "Didn't you already have your dinner?"

Her expression froze for a moment. Then, she sat down across from me, looking as if she had something to say.

In the past, I would never have been able to resist taking the initiative to ask her how her day was, but now I just wanted to focus on enjoying my meal.

"Gary, when it was Nina's birthday, we were still in the middle of our cold war. So, I—"

I cut her off. "It's not a big deal. Plus, it's already in the past. There's no need to bring it up again."

A look of bewilderment flashed across her face—because she had said exactly the same thing to me more than once.

The most recent time was when I was having a meal with Nina and asked her why she had helped Joanne deceive me.

At the time, Nina first glanced at Joanne to gauge her reaction. She then gave a faint, ambiguous smile.

"Gary, I just didn't want to cause problems between you two."

I was about to press further, but Joanne was already thoroughly fed up.

"It's not a big deal! Plus, it's already in the past. Are you seriously going to kick up a fuss about it now?" she had snapped in a low voice.

After dinner, Joanne showed no sign of leaving.

I took the opportunity to pull out the divorce papers my lawyer, Ramon Schmitt, had drawn up from my bag.

She glanced at the title and laughed in disbelief. "What's the meaning of this? Are you going to ask for a divorce again?"

She threw the divorce papers at my feet.

I picked them up and handed them to her again. "I'm being serious."

"Do you actually enjoy causing trouble every day?"

I shut up, for I knew if I said anything more, it'd just lead to another heated argument.

Joanne stormed out, slamming the door behind her.

I couldn't be bothered to find out where she went or what she did anymore.

Calmly, I placed the divorce papers in her study, then continued reviewing the Bellford property listings I hadn't gotten through during the day.

By the time I was ready for bed, Joanne still hadn't come back. Just as well, I was perfectly happy with the peace and freedom.

The next day, Joanne came to pick me up from work again.

I didn't refuse. It was a treatment I hadn't enjoyed in all these years—no point being difficult about it now.

I pulled open the back door and got in.

Joanne had a weird look on her face. "Gary, why are you sitting in the back?"

I looked at her, puzzled. "It's all the same wherever I sit."

"Then come sit up front."

Without commenting either way, I got out and moved to the passenger seat.

Something small jabbed me in the backside. I picked it up and looked at it—it was a vape pen.

Joanne immediately explained, "It's probably Philip's. He's pretty careless, always leaving things behind…"

Her voice trailed off under my gaze, and she looked at me somewhat uneasily.

I handed the vape pen to her. "Then don't forget to return it to him. This brand is quite expensive."

Every time it was time for Joanne to take her medicine, I would also call her to remind her. However, she was utterly annoyed by it."Gary, I'm not a child. I don't need you to remind me of these things."That one time, I heard Philip laughing beside her and saying, "Gary sure is clingy, huh?"Joanne grew even more impatient and said sharply, "Enough, Gary. Stop messaging me. I don't have time to read them anyway."Before she hung up, I heard Philip comforting her, "Joanne, don't be mad. Have a taste of this."And then came Joanne's voice, sounding more distant. "God, Gary's so annoying."I sighed and said to Nina, "You said it yourself—that was before. I still have work to do, so I'm going to hang up now."No sooner had I hung up than I received a call from Joanne."Gary, can you come see me?" she asked weakly."Joanne, we're divorced now," I replied sternly. Her voice came through strained. "Can't you even come see me as a friend?""I don't think our relationship was good

The new place had a subway station right downstairs, with a direct line straight to the company's doorstep. On my first day at work, I actually saw Joanne downstairs. Her car was parked along the curb.I nodded at her in greeting, then went on my way into the subway.Joanne followed me in.The morning rush hour meant that the subway was packed. Beside me, Joanne used her backpack to carve out a bit of breathing room.I looked down and saw on her face the look of someone waiting to be praised.I didn't say anything. She wouldn't be able to keep this up for long, anyway. In fact, the more strongly I objected, the more motivated she might become. She had always been like this, like a teenage girl in her rebellious phase.Back then, Joanne had bought a place right next to her office. Every day when I commuted to work, I had to transfer between two subway lines and still walk a stretch. There was a time when I wanted her to give me a lift to and from work.Joanne reluctantly agree

As I opened the door to the private room, I glanced back.Joanne was still standing there, looking at me with a somewhat crestfallen expression. She couldn't have been expecting me to introduce her to Mark just now, could she?In the past, I once went to Joanne's office to deliver some documents for her and met Philip and the other employees for the first time. I thought she would formally introduce me to them, but she acted as if I didn't exist and instead chatted with her colleagues. It was a manager who finally took the initiative to ask, "Joanne, who's this?"Only then did Joanne say curtly, "This is Gary Pearson."Philip smiled sweetly and said, "Hello, Gary. I'm Joanne's secretary, Philip Wyatt."He looked at Joanne with a hint of playful reproach, his tone full of familiarity."Don't blame her. Once she gets caught up in work, she doesn't notice anything else."When I got back home that day, I had a huge fight with Joanne. This memory only flashed through my mind for a

As I was heading to work the next day, my phone kept buzzing with a barrage of WhatsApp messages from Joanne.I was a little surprised. It was as if the two of us had swapped roles. In the past, I was the one who frequently messaged her.I replied once, and Joanne immediately called me."Gary, Philip's fever yesterday was pretty serious. I took him to the hospital, which is why I didn't go home for the night.""Oh, I see.""Gary, I'm sorry. I should have let you know.""It's fine. I understand.""Gary, I…"I had arrived at my office, so I said a quick word and hung up.As the end of the workday approached, Joanne sent me another message."Nina and the others want to get together today. Do you want to come with me?"I almost thought I'd misread it.In the past, Joanne would get together with her friends every few days. I had always wanted to join, but she never once brought me along. She'd say, "What would you even do there? It's all women, and you can't drink anyway."Bac

When I saw the real estate agent approaching, I said to Joanne succinctly, "I'm on a business trip to Bellford right now. Let's talk about whatever it is when I get back."With that, I hung up.This was the line she used most often to brush me off, and now I had picked it up myself without anyone teaching me.No one found the right place in just one viewing. Fortunately, it only took about 30 minutes to get to Bellford by train, so I planned to make another trip the following week.I spent a night in Bellford and got home around noon on Sunday. To my surprise, I found Joanne at home."Why didn't you tell me you were going to Bellford?"I was a little exasperated. "I'm a grown adult, and it's just a one-day business trip. Do I really have to report everything to you?""It's not safe for you to go out alone."A month ago, Joanne had been away on a business trip abroad. One night, I was woken by rustling sounds. It was only when I got to the living room that I realized someone w

Joanne said, "I really didn't know. There's nothing going on between Philip and m—"I cut her off. "Joanne, it doesn't matter.""What?""I said it doesn't matter. I don't really care anymore whether something's going on between you and Philip or not."The color drained from her face instantly. I turned to look out the window, putting an end to the topic.…From that day on, Joanne began picking me up from work every day and stopped going out to social gatherings.Every day, I would leave a signed copy of the divorce papers on the coffee table in the living room. But she simply pretended not to see them, and I didn't press her either. After all, it was only a matter of time before we got divorced. I had just been the one to bring it up first. If I were to show any urgency, she'd probably sneer and say I was just playing hard to get and throwing a tantrum. One day, as soon as I got into the car, Joanne said, "Nina's nephew, Travis Burke, has had his school enrollment sorted out
